Chapter 88: Chapter 87: Accident

Huo Xingchen lived in a large penthouse apartment on the fifty-second floor. Luckily, it wasn’t peak time, so he was the only one in the elevator. It didn’t take long to arrive.

The lock was facial recognition. It opened with a CLICK.

The moment the door was pushed open, the Little Paperman couldn’t help but tremble. The Yin Qi was too dense.

On the other end, Gu Qingyin’s expression instantly turned serious. She barely hesitated before going upstairs to change, grabbing her shoulder bag, and heading out.

Mao Mao chirped and scrambled onto Gu Qingyin’s shoulder.

She would have liked to drive herself, but unfortunately, she didn’t have a license and had to have the driver take her.

Along the way, Gu Qingyin kept urging the driver to go faster. The driver, thinking it was an emergency, skirted the edge of the speed limit the entire time and got her to her destination as quickly as possible.

The moment she entered the residential complex, Gu Qingyin’s brows furrowed.

It wasn’t because she found anything unusual. On the contrary, everything within the complex was normal. There was very little stray Yin Qi, making it an exceptionally clean complex.

But when she thought about the cloud of Yin Qi at Huo Xingchen’s place, Gu Qingyin grew even more worried.

After finding the right building, Gu Qingyin walked straight in, only to discover at the elevator doors that you needed facial recognition to use it.

Gu Qingyin: ...

Fifty-two floors. There was no way she was climbing that.

A glint flashed in her eyes and she turned and left. But a moment later, she returned, followed by "Huo Xingchen."

"Huo Xingchen" stood before the elevator, his large face practically pressed against the camera. The lens stuttered for two seconds, and then the elevator doors slowly slid open.

Gu Qingyin’s lips curled into a slight smile as she stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for 52.

Gu Qingyin stood quietly, but "Huo Xingchen" didn’t stay still for a second. He kept spinning around, pawing at this and peering at that, incredibly curious—not at all how a normal adult should behave.

Thankfully, the ride was short, so Gu Qingyin put up with it.

The moment they stepped out of the elevator, she slapped "Huo Xingchen" on the back of the head. "Change back, now!"

"Huo Xingchen" gave a wronged look, and then with a "POOF," he turned into a palm-sized monkey.

Gu Qingyin paid it no mind, her gaze sweeping across the elevator lobby, examining it inch by inch.

A bagua formation was pasted inside a cabinet near the door, specifically to ward off evil. Above the door hung an Eight Diagrams Mirror, used to suppress Yin Qi.

Both items were well-hidden; you wouldn’t notice them without looking closely.

Gu Qingyin scoffed inwardly. ’No wonder not a single wisp of Yin Qi has leaked out. The wards are quite thorough. But this also proves that Huo Xingchen really did something to damage his karmic virtue, and it looks like it wasn’t minor.’

’Of the three brothers, it’s always the youngest one causing the most trouble. He’s such a handful!’

Gu Qingyin walked to the door and flicked a finger near the lock. The door immediately let out a "BEEP" and opened.

It opened just a crack, and a frigid aura seeped out, only to be completely contained by the Eight Diagrams Mirror on the door. Not a single trace escaped.

Gu Qingyin’s expression darkened. This looked far more serious than the images the Little Paperman had sent back.

The Yin Qi was mixed with frantic, malevolent thoughts. It was obvious the Fierce Ghost being suppressed in this house had completely lost control.

Having come this far, Gu Qingyin saw no need for stealth. She boldly pushed the door open and walked in. Huo Xingchen was nowhere to be seen in the living room.

Gu Qingyin’s gaze immediately locked onto a room with its door half-open, pitch-black inside.

The Little Paperman had lost contact while she was on her way. She didn’t know if it had been corrupted by the Yin Qi or if it had been discovered and torn apart. In any case, Gu Qingyin would have to figure things out on her own now.

As she approached, Mao Mao’s fur stood on end. It let out a low, warning growl at the half-open door.

Gu Qingyin understood.

The Fierce Ghost inside was a threat to Mao Mao, but not enough to make it terrified. Otherwise, Mao Mao would have hidden long ago. Why else would it dare to bare its teeth?

This indirectly suggested the Fierce Ghost’s power was about on par with Mao Mao’s—nothing to be truly afraid of.

Still, to be cautious, Gu Qingyin drew her Fire Burning Stick.

The room was truly dark. The density of the Yin Qi was far beyond normal; to Gu Qingyin’s eyes, it was like a pitch-black abyss. She stopped at the doorway and muttered to herself, "Maybe I should purify it a bit before going in. It kind of stinks."

She cleared her throat and shouted from the doorway, "Huo Xingchen! Huo Xingchen, can you hear me?"

For several seconds, the room remained silent. Gu Qingyin frowned slightly, thinking, ’He couldn’t have run into trouble this easily, could he? Wasn’t he the one who suppressed this Fierce Ghost in the first place?’

Just as she was hesitating about whether to go straight in, a few noises finally came from inside the room, followed by a shaky, uncertain voice. "...Gu Qingyin?"

It was definitely Huo Xingchen’s voice. Gu Qingyin relaxed and replied with a hum, "I’m going to purify the Yin Qi first. Find a corner and protect yourself."

"Wait!" Huo Xingchen’s voice was a little frantic. Though his words were a protest, his body was already honestly searching for cover.

Gu Qingyin paid him no mind. She pulled a large handful of Gathering Yin Talismans from her bag and, without even counting, tossed them inside.

Seeing this, Mao Mao let out an excited shriek. It might not recognize other talismans, but it was all too familiar with Gathering Yin Talismans! This was its food!

With so many, it could eat for days! ’Gu Qingyin is the best!’

Mao Mao excitedly nuzzled Gu Qingyin’s neck. Before it could let out a few winsome cries, a "BOOM" echoed from inside the room. A flash of white light erupted, so brilliant that Gu Qingyin instinctively shut her eyes.

Then, a wave of energy surged out, sending Gu Qingyin, who was standing at the door, flying.

Gu Qingyin reacted quickly. She instinctively adjusted her posture, curling into a ball to protect her head and torso. As she landed, she broke her fall with one hand and stood steadily in the middle of the living room.

The move was graceful, but her mind was completely blank.

’Why did it suddenly explode?’

’That flash of light just now...’

A look of stunned realization crossed Gu Qingyin’s face. ’Did I mix a Thunder Talisman in with the Gathering Yin Talismans and throw it in?’

A flicker of annoyance crossed her eyes. Her talismans were always sorted and arranged with meticulous care. This time, they must have gotten mixed up because her bag was too cramped.

’Looks like organizing my shoulder bag needs to be moved up the priority list.’

’Still, it was lucky only one got mixed in. If Huo Xingchen did as I said and protected himself, he shouldn’t be too badly hurt.’

She had discovered that morning that because Huo Xingchen had previously practiced an incomplete version of the Thunder Decision, which caused electrical feedback every time he used it, his body already had a certain resistance to lightning.

"Aaaah..."

A weak cry rang out. Gu Qingyin froze for a second, then suddenly remembered that Mao Mao had also been caught in the blast.

She looked around and finally spotted Mao Mao lying listlessly on the living room coffee table.

"Are you hurt?" Gu Qingyin asked nervously, pulling Mao Mao up to inspect it carefully. But... it seemed to have only lost a few hairs?

Gu Qingyin was baffled. ’If it’s not hurt, why is it in so much pain?’

Mao Mao looked like it had lost all will to live, tears welling in its eyes as it cried out in its heart: ’My food!’
