Chapter 90: Chapter 89: Keeping Dad

Before Huo Xingchen could speak, he was cut off by his father’s ghost. "Xingchen?"

Huo Yunjing sidled closer to Gu Qingyin and whispered, "Our son is also named Xingchen. He’s ten years old." He gestured toward his waist. "He’s about this tall, you know?"

Gu Qingyin’s expression was complicated, and Huo Xingchen’s eyes immediately reddened.

"Dad..."

Huo Yunjing looked at Huo Xingchen in bewilderment and shock. Then, he glanced cautiously at Gu Qingyin and explained plaintively, "Honey, I really don’t know him, you have to believe me! I’ve never done anything to let you down."

Gu Qingyin was rendered even more speechless. ’If I weren’t a hundred percent sure I hadn’t lost my own memory, I’d almost believe we were once a deeply loving couple.’

"Rein in your Yin Qi. You’re freezing me."

Huo Yunjing took a deep breath, trying to draw it in, but the Yin Qi continued to pour out of his body. He couldn’t contain it no matter how hard he tried, and the effort only made him angrier. Finally, he gave up, turned to Gu Qingyin, and said, "Honey, if you just put on more clothes, you won’t be cold."

Gu Qingyin scoffed. ’Well, isn’t he a clever one?’

Rubbing her throbbing temples, Gu Qingyin took out a dagger, cut off a lock of her own hair, and tied it around Huo Yunjing’s wrist.

As if by magic, the Yin Qi around Huo Yunjing was instantly concealed, vanishing from sight.

Huo Yunjing looked down at himself, then lifted his wrist to sniff the lock of hair tied there, and a happy smile spread across his face.

Gu Qingyin’s lip twitched. She shot a glance at Huo Xingchen. "Let’s talk elsewhere."

The three of them relocated to the living room. Gu Qingyin sat on the sofa, with Huo Yunjing clinging to her like glue, impossible to push away.

Anxious to find out what had happened, Gu Qingyin decided to let Huo Yunjing be for the time being.

As the one at fault, Huo Xingchen knew to stand opposite Gu Qingyin. With his head lowered, he stared at the coffee table between them, trying to formulate his words. He was searching for a way to make his transgression sound even a little more reasonable.

"Cat got your tongue?" Gu Qingyin’s expression was impassive as she commanded in a tone that brooked no argument, "Speak."

Huo Xingchen flinched. Keeping his eyes fixed on the coffee table, he started from the beginning.

"When I was seven, I was playing hide-and-seek with my older brother and hid in your bedroom. I stumbled upon your cultivation notes. I couldn’t understand them at first, but I had a gut feeling that whatever was recorded in them was incredibly powerful."

"Later, as I learned to read more, I began to understand parts of the notes, so I started practicing what was written in them on my own."

At this, a flicker of interest appeared in Gu Qingyin’s eyes. "From when you started cultivating to the first time you sensed Spiritual Power, how long did it take?"

Huo Xingchen thought for a moment before replying, a bit uncertainly, "About half a year, I think."

Gu Qingyin nodded. "Continue."

’With no one to guide him, sensing Spiritual Power in only half a year... that was remarkably fast. Huo Xingchen really is talented in this area.’

"I fumbled my way through cultivation until I turned ten," Huo Xingchen continued. "Then, Dad was suddenly in a car accident and was admitted to the ICU."

"I was so scared. We grew up without a mom, and I was terrified that Dad would leave us too. I prayed for him to recover and come home, but I also prepared for the worst. If Dad didn’t make it, I had to at least keep his soul here, so he could stay with me in a different form."

"Over the next few days, I pored over your notes again and again until I finally found a method to keep a soul from leaving."

Huo Xingchen took a deep breath. "I used my own flesh and blood as a suppression tool. The very moment Dad died, I forcibly bound his soul here."
