Chapter 94: Chapter 93: Retracting a Monkey

Huo Xingchen was driving, with Gu Qingyin navigating from the passenger seat. The moment she gave the address, however, Huo Xingchen already knew the way.

"A classmate from middle school used to live over there. I visited a few times."

Gu Qingyin raised an eyebrow. "A friend? Your second brother said you were withdrawn and a total homebody growing up. But it looks like you had friends after all."

Huo Xingchen looked a little awkward. "My second brother wasn’t wrong. She was just a classmate. Our middle school offered financial aid to students in need, and I came with a teacher to check on their situation."

Gu Qingyin hummed in understanding. After a couple of seconds of silence, she added, "So, are you a little more outgoing now?"

"I guess." For some reason, Huo Xingchen’s expression darkened. "If you don’t curse people out sometimes, you’ll give yourself an ulcer from holding it all in."

’Especially when you run into garbage teammates while gaming. It’s just the worst. The only reason I’m so lively and cheerful now is thanks to all those old gaming partners who screwed me over! They deserve all the credit!’

Parking near the old residential complex was extremely tight. After circling once, Huo Xingchen had no choice but to park in a public spot a short distance away.

After getting out of the car, Gu Qingyin stared at the map on her phone, turning in a circle before stopping. "This way," she said with conviction.

Beneath the moonlight, a tall figure emerged from the darkness, coalescing behind Gu Qingyin. Two arms draped themselves over her shoulders as the entire ghost practically hung off her, blowing a cool breath into her ear.

"My love, I smell the scent of blood."

Gu Qingyin was focused on navigating and paid him no mind. "What scent of blood? I don’t smell anything..." Before the words even left her mouth, a gust of night wind blew past, carrying with it the faint, coppery-sweet smell.

Gu Qingyin’s expression changed instantly. She took off at a sprint, running in the direction the wind had come from.

She had moved without any warning. Huo Xingchen froze for a second before he remembered to give chase, but even though he was in decent shape, his stamina was no match for Gu Qingyin’s.

Mao Mao, who had been perched on his head, started screeching impatiently. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, it leaped to the ground and shot after her like a little whirlwind.

Huo Xingchen stared, dumbfounded, finding it hard to accept that he couldn’t even outrun a palm-sized pet. He gritted his teeth and ran with all his might.

The closer they got to the complex, the stronger the scent of blood became, and the darker Gu Qingyin’s expression grew.

’I can’t believe Feng Xia has gone this crazy. It’s barely even dark and she’s already started killing. The streets are still bustling with people and cars! She’s completely lost it; all she wants to do is kill!’

She rushed into the complex. A crowd had gathered in front of one of the packed old apartment buildings. They were all residents; some had come down after sensing something was wrong, while others had seen messages in the neighborhood’s group chat and came to see the commotion.

Of course, in the midst of the gawking, someone had already called the police.

Gu Qingyin felt a headache coming on the moment she saw the crowd.

’What are these people thinking? They know someone is committing a violent crime, that there might even be a dead body, and they’re still crowding around to watch!’

’The main point is, from where they’re standing, they can’t even see inside the building. They’re too scared to go in, but they don’t want to leave either. What are they waiting for? For Feng Xia to come out so they can serve themselves up on a platter?’

’A bunch of damn idiots!’

"Go home, all of you!" Gu Qingyin shouted. "Go back to your apartments, lock your doors and windows, and don’t come out no matter what you hear!"

Her voice was so loud that everyone turned to stare at her. They then exchanged glances, their silent questions hanging in the air: Who was this woman? Was she a police officer? That would be incredibly fast. And why wasn’t she in uniform?

"Hey, who are you? We just called the cops. There’s no way they’d get here this fast." A punkish young man stepped out from the crowd. He looked Gu Qingyin up and down with a smirk. "You’re pretty easy on the eyes, I’ll give you that. But what gives you the right to boss us around? Do you even know what’s going on here?"

The young man took a step closer and lowered his voice. "Let me tell you, in there..." He pointed to the pitch-black building entrance, his voice dropping to a deliberate, menacing whisper. "Someone’s dead!"

Gu Qingyin’s brow furrowed. She couldn’t stop herself from slapping him right across the face. "If you want to talk, then talk. Why are you getting so close? Don’t you know you have bad breath?"

Before the young man could fly into a humiliated rage, she continued, "I’m here to deal with this. I don’t need you to fill me in. I’ll say this one last time: if you don’t want to die, go home. Now."

Gu Qingyin’s heavy gaze swept across the crowd, her voice laced with an inexplicable authority. "Otherwise, when the person inside comes out, you’ll all die." She spoke the last three words softly and slowly, but they landed on the crowd’s hearts with the weight of a mountain.

The area fell silent for a second. Then, as if someone had hit a start button, everyone turned and scrambled back to their homes.

In moments, the only one left downstairs was Gu Qingyin. Oh, and Mao Mao, who had just caught up.

Seeing that the outsiders were gone, the invisible Huo Yunjing reappeared. He eagerly sidled up to Gu Qingyin. "My love, I can go deal with her. You can just rest here."

A glint appeared in Gu Qingyin’s eyes. "Alright. You go up and watch her. Don’t let her hurt anyone else, but don’t finish her off."

Huo Yunjing didn’t understand. "Why not?"

"I’m saving her for our son to practice on."

’Huo Yunjing got it. He understood, but at the same time, he felt a pang of jealousy. His wife was paying way too much attention to that brat. He never got this kind of special treatment... Hmph.’

Huo Yunjing floated upstairs, his heart aching with bitterness.

Gu Qingyin glanced toward the entrance of the complex. "What’s taking him so long?"

Beside her, Mao Mao fidgeted anxiously, nodding its head over and over. So, so slow! It was more than a monkey could bear!

Another two minutes passed before Huo Xingchen finally came running in, gasping for air. Before he could even catch his breath, Gu Qingyin grabbed him and pulled him into the pitch-black apartment building.

Huo Xingchen was still panting hard. As he entered the building, he took a deep breath and nearly gagged. The stench of blood was overwhelming; his body recoiled from it instinctively, a primal warning.

"Can you see anything?" Gu Qingyin asked.

Huo Xingchen dry-heaved a couple of times before pulling a mask from his pocket and putting it on. It didn’t do much to block the smell, but it offered a bit of psychological comfort. At least with it on, he could stop himself from gagging.

"...It’s a little blurry."

Huo Xingchen didn’t have the Yin Yang Eye, but under specific circumstances, he could see things that were out of the ordinary, just not with much clarity.

After a moment’s thought, Gu Qingyin decided to open his Yin Yang Eye for him.

’This is his first real exorcism. He should at least know what his enemy looks like.’

With the Yin Yang Eye activated, Huo Xingchen felt as if a fog before his eyes had been swept away. The world became incredibly sharp, and small details he had previously overlooked were now crystal clear.

What he had perceived as a pitch-black stairwell was actually covered in a filthy, viscous black liquid that looked utterly disgusting.

"What is that?" Huo Xingchen asked, his eyes filled with revulsion. He felt like he was going to be sick again.

Gu Qingyin’s brow was also wrinkled in a frown. "It’s a byproduct created when Evil Qi becomes too dense. It has no offensive power, but it’s corrupting. Too much exposure can easily foster malicious thoughts, so do your best not to touch it."

Huo Xingchen nodded, only to realize her request was a bit difficult. The substance covered the entire staircase. To go up, he would have to step in it. It was completely unavoidable.

Mao Mao, standing at their feet, looked left and right, not understanding why they had stopped. It hopped forward, landing right in a puddle of the slime.

Mao Mao’s foot got stuck. It looked down curiously, then couldn’t resist scooping some of it up with its hand. It brought the glob close to its nose and sniffed carefully. With a ZING, its two big eyes lit up like lightbulbs.

It looked up again, and upon seeing the entire staircase covered in the slime, Mao Mao let out an involuntary cheer. It was about to charge forward on all fours when its little body was snatched up just as it leaped.

Gu Qingyin quickly snatched back the little foodie monkey. "Most filth like this can be dealt with using a talisman," she said to her son. "You give it a try."
