By the time he finished coordinating the defensive preparations with Elias and stood gazing out from a high tower on the city wall, over a dozen hours had passed.
It was now midnight.
Standing at a graystone battlement, Su Zhou, Elias, and several City Guard Captains gazed into the distance, their brows furrowed.
The weather had been terrible lately, and the Gray Mist was growing thicker. This fog, a product of the world’s end, was not harmful to people, but it caused various Spiritual Arrays to malfunction. If not for his Five Spirits Colored Scales converting Spiritual Power, Su Zhou’s Celestial Human Cycle likely wouldn’t even be able to operate under these conditions.
There was almost no light. The ghastly white sun had long since dropped below the horizon. The sparse light of the moon and stars flickered feebly in the murky gray sky, barely managing to bring a faint, almost invisible, glimmer to the land.
Su Zhou activated his Thermal Vision. His cyan-purple Dragon Pupils dilated, taking in as much light as possible.
He could see them now. On the distant horizon, the lines of refugees were faintly visible, as was the palpable, deathly aura of the Undead.
Dust plumed in the distance. Groups of refugees from Mickelson Castle were on horseback, using Magic, riding in carriages, or mounted on various other Magical Beasts, all galloping at full speed toward the only light on the plains: the Sheltering Array of Naisel City. The members of the merchant caravan who had rushed ahead to deliver the news probably never imagined there would be so many refugees. A quick glance suggested their numbers were at least over thirty thousand.
The various Undead following close behind them even outnumbered the refugees. Like lions herding a flock of sheep, they drove all the refugees toward Naisel City.
As the refugees and the Undead Army drew closer, a sharp Gale began to blow across the wilderness. Carried by the Strong Wind, dark gray clouds surged in from the horizon, swiftly swallowing what little moonlight remained and plunging the entire sky into darkness.
The rumble of thunder and the damp, cloying air of imminent rain arrived simultaneously as the temperature plummeted to near freezing.
"Something’s not right."
Su Zhou’s expression was grim. This scene had been recorded countless times in the history books of Zhengguo, giving him a strong sense of déjà vu. A suspicion began to form in the young man’s mind. "Don’t tell me they plan to use the refugees from Mickelson Castle as cannon fodder and human shields to assault the city?"
The moment the words left his mouth, the more plausible it seemed. Su Zhou’s brow tightened. "And with a Dead Tutor on their side, even if these refugees die, they can be reanimated and used again... Alive, they can break our morale. Dead, they can be used as weapons. Those bastards, what a truly vicious plan!"
"Mr. Su, please calm down..."
The logic was easy to follow. Hearing the fury in Su Zhou’s voice, Elias looked up at him worriedly. He was afraid Su Zhou might have a sudden burst of compassion and insist on opening the city gates to let the refugees in. Not only would that make the gates vulnerable to attack, but there were also likely many spies of the Water God Believers hidden among the refugees.
"Don’t worry, I’m perfectly calm."
But Su Zhou wasn’t that foolish. He was kind-hearted, not an idiot. ’Forget about personal feelings. There are a million people in Naisel City. Thirty thousand refugees versus a million of Naisel’s people... I’m well aware of which responsibility weighs more.’
It’s just that the Water God Believers had clearly gotten one thing wrong.
Namely, that only the weak agonize over such dilemmas.
"So, I’m going to teach those monsters a lesson."
As he spoke in a cold voice, Su Zhou was already fully armed.
The Blade of Annihilation hung at his left waist, and the Dragon Horn Long Spear was strapped to his back. A Magic Longbow, meant to be expendable, was slung over his right arm. Elias had specially picked it out for him. It didn’t have any other significant functions; it was simply an extremely sturdy Maze Divine Object that would at least allow Su Zhou to fire several arrows with his full strength.
On his utility belt, Holy Water, Jade Marrow, and Jade Liquid were all arranged in order, ready for him to use at a moment’s notice.
"I’m going to stop the Undead now. You can send some people to guide the refugees to make camp near the watchtowers around the city walls. Once I’ve slaughtered all of the monsters, you can screen the refugees one by one before letting them into the city."
As he spoke, Su Zhou stepped onto the battlement, evidently preparing to fly straight over, charge into the enemy formation alone, and crush the Undead Army.
This was no empty boast.
The Su Zhou of today had already cultivated 240 Gale Seeds. By channeling his power, unleashing a punch with three hundred tons of force was a trivial matter. If he were on Earth, he could probably demolish a skyscraper just as fast as King Kong.
Furthermore, his Thunder Technique and Water Technique had improved significantly. His physical defense, enhanced by Spiritual Power, was enough to withstand a conventional missile strike. Tearing a tank apart with his bare hands or calling down a Thunderbolt was as easy as breathing.
In terms of raw power, a conventional modern army would be utterly unable to suppress him. If Su Zhou were to return to the Divine Wood World, he could have taken on everyone on the Earth of that time with nothing more than a single blade.
—The "Extraordinary" in Extraordinary Tier meant transcending the Mortal World.
And Su Zhou, standing at the pinnacle of this realm, no longer feared conventional armies in the slightest—not even the Undead Army controlled by the Water God Believers.
"If the situation looks grim, please return as quickly as possible... It may be selfish to say, but Naisel City has over a million citizens who need your protection even more."
Although the decision was incredibly bold, it was Su Zhou’s intention, so Elias and the others couldn’t dissuade him. He simply bowed his head to the departing Su Zhou and advised him earnestly in a quiet voice.
