Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 438 - 19: First, Ask If I Am Still Here

It made sense. Only an existence like this could have inspired him so deeply with that first, mysterious strike.

At this moment, Su Zhou was eager to resume his battle with the Water God. However, the giant island whale, manipulating the currents to conceal its body within the crashing waves, had instead lost all desire to fight.

"Wait, you anomalous being."

All it wanted now was for Su Zhou to use that mysterious attack on it again, to send it back into that state of epiphany... The Water God felt that it might truly be able to find the truth behind the Era’s Reincarnation and escape this world’s sorrowful cycle of destruction and rebirth.

This was far more important than regaining its own power. This was the only path that could lead its people to happiness.

So it spoke to the extremely wary Su Zhou, who was expecting another attack. "Why do you fight me? There is no reason for us to battle to the death."

"You’re asking me why I fight?!"

Even Su Zhou, who had resolved not to communicate with his opponent, was uncontrollably shocked to hear such a question. He retorted instinctively, "You—a monstrous Evil God who butchered a city, wiped out its people, and used countless lives as a blood sacrifice to restore your power—are asking *me* why?"

Su Zhou sounded as if he had just heard the most ridiculous joke imaginable. He swished his massive tail and laughed in utter disbelief. "You came to my city, destroyed it, killed its people, and now you have the gall to ask why I’m fighting you?!"

"But you are not human. You are not even a being of this Era of Earth, nor are you from this world."

Gazing at the Gray-scaled Evil Dragon before it, a creature that indeed bore no trace of humanity, the colossal Water God’s Soul Communication shook the very Spirit Realm. "What does the changing of this world’s Eras have to do with you? Our war with the Earth People is a battle for the continuation of our time, a struggle where we wager the very future of our civilization and Race! None of this concerns you in the slightest!"

"It was supposed to be a grand, decisive battle, but the civilization of the Earth Era has lost all its fire. Their will to struggle and survive has been ground down by a thousand-year-long apocalypse, which is why it seemed like a mere slaughter. But I have not given up! My people yearn for another chance! This time, we will surely find a way to delay the world’s end, or even prevent it entirely!"

The giant Whale God roared at Su Zhou, "Unknown, anomalous life-form! The fate of this world’s Reincarnation has nothing to do with you! The deaths of everyone in this world have nothing to do with you! You have no friends here, no family. Your only purpose in coming here must be to seek the Divine Objects that only emerge after a world’s destruction, correct?"

"I can give them all to you! Everything! If you want power, I can give you my own flesh and blood! If you want materials, I can command my followers to find them for you! Just let me enter that state of epiphany one more time, let me grasp that crucial key, and I will promise you anything!"

But the only answer the god received was Su Zhou’s furious reply: "What do you mean it has nothing to do with me?!"

In truth, the Water God was right. Su Zhou had no connection to this world. The changing of times, the Era’s Reincarnation, the apocalypse—none of it was tied to him, a visitor from another world. He truly had no family here, and no friends.

But... Su Zhou remembered Elias. He remembered the ordinary people just chatting and boasting in the bar. He remembered the little girl who had thanked him, and the old City Guard who had died beneath the waves.

’To be honest, these people had touched him, but he couldn’t call them his friends. They were fond acquaintances, at most. A normal person, someone without power, would face a situation like this, sigh with regret, feel a pang of sorrow and injustice, and then simply move on.’

’After all, they couldn’t do anything to the Water God, nor could they change the world. So, they could only console themselves with the thought that *it has nothing to do with me* and just go with the flow.’

But Su Zhou was no ordinary person! He possessed a power known as the Extraordinary! He refused to just sigh, refused to just feel sorrow, and he would not let the Ancient Blade named Righteous Qi within his heart grow dull. So, when he saw injustice, he had to act! He had to use his power to obliterate it!

The powerful need no reason, for they themselves are reason enough. And so, facing the bewildered Water God, the enraged Evil-Devouring Demon Lord’s eyes flew wide open. He would use all his might to refute the Giant Whale’s absurd philosophy!

"A reason? Why do I need a reason!? Why do you need a reason to help the innocent? Why do you need a reason to fight for the weak? Why do you need a reason to struggle against injustice?! You people... you do everything for some benefit, for some purpose! Whenever you encounter something you can’t comprehend, you just run around asking ’why’—but why should doing the right thing need a ’why’?!"

Su Zhou enunciated every word, his voice seething with uncontrollable rage. "Don’t ask me why I’m saving them. You should be asking yourself why you murdered them!"

"You committed evil, so I am your retribution! You slaughtered the innocent, so I am here to kill you! If no one will pass Judgment on Divine Beings, then I will be your tribunal!"

—Do not ask if the bonfire should burn; first ask if the cold and darkness still remain!

—Do not ask if the bullet should be chambered; first ask if oppression and exploitation still remain!

—Do not ask if the cause of justice has a tomorrow; first ask if injustice still plagues the Human World today!

’I am a Transcendent, one who has gained power beyond mortals. I am a Contractor, heir to the legacy of a Great Being. I am Su Zhou, the Evil-Devouring Demon Lord—since I have witnessed this, how can I possibly turn my back on the suffering of others and pretend it has nothing to do with me?’

"Monster!"

Forcibly suppressing the fury that blazed within him, Su Zhou opened his mouth. Within his massive maw, still slick with blood and gore, a Divine Blade rested upon the tip of his tongue. It burned a brilliant golden-red, pushed to its absolute limit. Countless ashen-gray scales wrapped around the blade, and with it as the focal point, all of Su Zhou’s power condensed upon it!

An unprecedentedly furious Breath attack began to build, and an icy Soul Communication echoed forth:

"Don’t ask why you are about to die!"

"First, ask if I am still here!"
