The strange, gray-haired man—a dangerous being who called himself the Wind God—smiled at Su Zhou and tipped his hat in a gesture of respect.
According to the etiquette of the Tartadis World, he should have removed his hat. However, his hat was clearly a strange sort of Mimic Shell. While it wasn’t impossible to remove, it certainly wouldn’t be a pretty sight if he did.
He had expected Su Zhou to be surprised, but instead, Su Zhou just let out a flat, "Oh."
After the "oh," as if sensing his attitude was rather impolite, Su Zhou quickly added, "Greetings, Your Excellency, the Wind God... I never thought you’d take on a human form. How surprising. How did you manage that?"
Clearly, his tone held not a hint of surprise, but rather a strong sense of curiosity.
"...Greetings to you as well." The Wind God now revealed his Near-God Tier presence. In terms of Suppression alone, he was in no way inferior to the late Water God.
Furthermore, the ability to release his presence without causing the surrounding Spiritual Qi to fluctuate demonstrated that the Wind God’s control over his power was perhaps even greater than the Water God’s. It also meant he had recovered more completely.
Although Su Zhou’s attitude was rather deflating, the Wind God continued to smile. "As for how I did it," he said, "it’s just a simple application of my shell."
As he spoke, the gray-haired man’s face split down the middle and opened to either side like a pair of shutters. Revealed before Su Zhou’s eyes were the compound eyes and fine fuzz of an insect, like a bee.
The two shell plates that formed his human face quickly snapped shut. But it was all very clear now: the Wind God’s human guise was just a layer of human-shaped plating wrapped around his special exoskeleton. Inside, he was still a giant insect.
It was just as Su Zhou had initially speculated: the dominant Race of the Era of Wind was very likely the numerous insect-type Magical Beasts of that age.
Of course, the sight of a face opening like a pair of shutters was truly grotesque. The Wind God had expected Su Zhou to be shocked, but Su Zhou merely expressed a flicker of mild surprise. "So it can do that!"
To be honest, this mildly surprised reaction was even more deflating than a calm, expressionless one would have been.
This left the Wind God feeling rather frustrated.
"You’re not surprised at all?"
This Divine Being, whose personality was clearly anything but dour and serious, sighed. "The mortals from the Era of Water and the Era of Earth were always so surprised when they saw me do my face trick."
"Oh, I was quite surprised, actually."
Su Zhou answered with blunt honesty. "But if I actually acted surprised, that would be giving you exactly what you want. I’m not the kind of person who likes to let others get the satisfaction of showing off. Unless they’re a friend of mine, of course. In that case, I’ll even play along and feed their ego. But you’re not my friend."
Since both parties possessed what could be considered normal thought processes, this blunt remark didn’t derail the conversation. Instead, it continued on smoothly.
"You are indeed the Wind God," Su Zhou stated. "You suppress it well, but I have a bit of a Talent for the Wind Attribute myself. I can sense it—a lively breeze constantly flowing around you."
The moment the man had introduced himself, Su Zhou had already confirmed his identity. He did indeed carry a power similar to Wind Aid, but it was far stronger, closer to the very essence of ’flow and gaseous states’ that defined Spiritual Power.
This power, much like the Water God’s control over water, was so immense that it was paradoxically obvious.
Su Zhou was skilled at trash talk, but he didn’t want to waste time on pleasantries in this situation. "You came to find me alone, which must mean you’ve investigated me. You know I killed the Water God. So, Wind God, can I assume you don’t wish to be my enemy? If that’s the case, may I ask you a question?"
"Not be your enemy... In a sense, yes, that’s correct."
Many people would have been put off by Su Zhou’s direct, cut-to-the-chase style of communication, but the Wind God wasn’t a person. He was an insectoid lifeform of unknown true form. He simply ’smiled’ at Su Zhou’s question. "My purpose in coming here to meet you alone was, of course, to talk. As for your question, ask away. If it’s something I can answer, I will."
"Good." The great Wingless Dragon nodded slightly. He raised a single draconic claw, and his violet-cyan, slitted pupils locked onto the Wind God. "You recovered your strength so quickly. Did you use slaughter and blood sacrifice to restore your power?"
"Slaughter and blood sacrifice? That sort of thing... other Gods might, but I don’t."
The Wind God seemed rather dismissive of Su Zhou’s question. "Ultimately, for a God to restore their power, all they need is time and to find their Divine Hall. The power gained from blood sacrifice is chaotic and impure. It might provide a small boost at first, but in the long run, it becomes a liability."
"The younger Divine Beings need to protect their people, so they need to recover their strength quickly and are willing to resort to slaughter. But I have no people to protect."
"Oh? You don’t?"
Hearing that the Wind God hadn’t used slaughter and blood sacrifice to recover his power, Su Zhou’s brow, which had been furrowed, relaxed slightly. It seemed he’d found someone he could actually talk to. But a moment later, an even more terrible possibility occurred to him, and his expression grew grim. "Listen, and forgive me if this is impolite or presumptuous... but you didn’t... do something to your people, did you?"
