"The Silent Lord’s love... It’s really hard to accept."
Brilliant stars were embedded in the gray-blue twilight sky. Layers of white clouds, like a tide, were swept by a strong wind toward the far edges of the heavens. The bright moon’s radiance cast a pale silver glow atop the clouds, while a golden dawn was slowly rising on the horizon.
A young man lay on the flat rock of a cliff, his arms pillowed behind his head. He gazed at the starlight in the gaps between the clouds overhead. The faint buzzing of insects’ wings, like a nocturne, hummed by his ear, joined by the calls of distant birds beginning to stir.
On the young man’s chest rested a small, red snake, coiled into a ball. It lay right over his heart, the warmest spot, where the vibrations were most distinct. The little snake comfortably enjoyed this rhythmic service, flicked its tail, and lazily answered his question:
"Yes, that is the Silent Lord’s love. The world itself is meant to alternate and undergo Reincarnation, and the Silent Lord’s power allows all things to be reborn in this rapid transition. The sparks that people ignite as they fight for the future... that is the means by which the Silent Lord discerns its own Beloved."
As it spoke, the Snake Spirit opened one eye slightly. Its serpentine pupil swiveled, watching the light of dawn appear in the sky. "All things receive a New World, the Silent Lord can search for the children it favors, the dead will undergo Reincarnation once more, and those brave enough to break that cycle will receive their rewards... This is the Silent Lord’s love—a painful Trial, called ’love.’"
"Just as in all the myths of the All Heavens and Myriads of Worlds, those who return from the Netherworld are hailed as great Heroes. Any being who can accept this kind of love must be a Powerhouse capable of shattering fate."
"No wonder It was sealed..."
The young man, Su Zhou, muttered. Then, he asked thoughtfully, "So, Yara, what do you think Its attitude is toward the Great Seal?"
"It doesn’t care whether It breaks out of the Seal or not. But since you want to reinforce it, It doesn’t mind helping you."
Yara shook its head slightly and said with a laugh, "On the contrary, right now, It would rather be sealed off from all other beings. That way, It can just comfortably hide away in its own little world, with no contact or communication with the outside."
"...Why does that sound like It developed autism?" The description made Su Zhou blink, a question mark practically appearing over his head. "Narrow interests, difficulty communicating, social ineptitude, repetitive behavior... Aren’t those the classic early symptoms of autism?"
"Hah, autism would be getting off easy." When it came to trash-talking old friends, Yara immediately perked up, its eyes gleaming as it went on the offensive. It let out a wicked cackle. "Among that bunch of survivors, my mental state is the best of the lot. The Silent Lord is in the second-best tier. As for the others, some have severe autism, some have serious PTSD, some are lost in self-doubt, and some are even schizophrenic or paranoid."
"The worst ones completely changed the very meaning of their own existence!"
"And you?" Su Zhou astutely noted that Yara had said its mental state was the *best*, not that it was free of psychological issues. "Judging by the way you always frown whenever you see a Celestial God Seal, I’d say that’s a classic reaction to mild post-traumatic stress disorder—"
"Shut up!"
Time passed unnoticed as he bantered with Yara, and soon, dawn arrived.
Su Zhou slowly rose to his feet on the cliff in this New Era, gazing out at the world.
The sun rose higher, unveiling the blue sky. The Stardust that had filled the vast plains and the bright moon that reflected the sun’s glory began to fade with the growing daylight. It was as if they were falling from the heavens to the earth, only to vanish, becoming Traceless.
—This old man lies high on Manjushri Platform, striking open the blue sky with my staff in the night.
—Scattering Stardust across the vast plains, which the mountain monks all claim are the Buddha’s lanterns.
This was, as it happened, a high mountain at the Central point of the world, and the young man was on a jutting cliff of this very mountain.
From a distance, the mountain’s shape resembled a Giant lying on its side, raising a hand to point toward the horizon. And Su Zhou now stood upon the Giant’s finger.
Standing on the tip of the Giant’s finger, Su Zhou surveyed this New Era.
He could see the edge of a great sea in the distance, its waves rising and falling. If one were to fly tens of thousands of meters into the sky and look down upon the world, one would see that the ocean was shaped like a giant whale, a counterpart to the continent across from it.
On the other side of the sea, deep within the continent, lay an ancient city. In that city lived the scaled Dragon-men, who called themselves the descendants of the Immortal and sang of legends from a previous Era.
—Before the birth of this Era, all was shrouded in Gray Mist. There was no life between heaven and earth, only dead, silent sands, endless Mazes, and vicious, soulless Monsters.
The world was dim and filled with Chaos; floods and calamities were unending.
That was, until the Immortal Ancient Dragon arrived and bestowed its blood upon them. It, along with the Master of Insects and the Master of Humans, traveled to the deepest part of the earth. There, they unearthed the first and final flame, and using it as the Source, forged a new Era.
And so, the Four Kings’ Souls were scattered across the world.
The Master of Insects received the Soul of the Gale.
The Master of Humans received the Flame Soul.
As for the Water Soul, the Lords hid it in the depths of the sea. If one wishes to seek it, then by all means, go and search.
And the Earth Soul was split apart by the Dragon. It shared the fragments with all people, granting them the power called hope.
