Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 523 - 21: I Will Scatter Your Ashes

"This is just... unbelievably huge..."

Even Su Zhou, who had seen the Immortal Banyan Tree before, was shaken. To say nothing of the others, even the Daoist Saint subconsciously plucked a whisker from his beard as he gazed at the roots. "Oh, West Mother Great Venerable... how on earth did you manage to defeat this tree?"

Around the roots were numerous mines and plantations. The roots of the Tree of Life pierced through the planet’s crust and mantle. Its past movements had dragged massive subterranean mineral veins to the surface, forming one rich ore layer after another. As a result, the vicinity of each root was rich with metallic ores, and certain plants also thrived in this environment.

Su Zhou walked to the edge of the Great Roc’s back, gazing down upon the land. His eyesight was comparable to a powerful telescope, allowing him to clearly see every movement of the beasts on the surface dozens of kilometers away.

He could see vast numbers of the Slave Species living and working in the mines and plantations. They were the same type of Evil Beasts Su Zhou had killed in the Beast God Realm. Their bodies were incredibly powerful, and they seemed to have undergone numerous modifications, yet they possessed no intelligence whatsoever. These Evil Beasts in the mines and plantations were not evil at all; in fact, they were exceedingly docile. A single Spirit Beast, likely from the Combat Species, could oversee anywhere from several hundred to nearly a thousand members of the Slave Species, compelling them to labor.

Swarms of Evil Beasts shuttled back and forth, hauling ore in the mines and tilling the soil in the plantations. This continued even late into the night. They worked ceaselessly—weeding, clearing new land—without a hint of pain, fatigue, or hesitation. They didn’t even possess despair. There was no communication or eye contact between any two members of the Slave Species, no reaction to one another whatsoever. They were like troops of living, biological machines.

In fact, they truly were biological machines. At the edges of the mines, he could see some young of the Slave Species. These Spirit Beast cubs were not put to work; their movements and expressions were far more lively and intelligent than their parents’, and they clearly possessed a discernible level of sentience.

But this nascent sentience wouldn’t last. The massive numbers of Spirit Beast cubs would be rounded up and sorted by the Combat Species. The stronger ones, grouped together, were sent into a series of bizarre buildings. By the time they emerged, they were just as vacant and stupefied as their parents.

As for the weaker ones, they were killed and eaten on the spot. Judging from the gleeful looks on the faces of the Combat Species, this appeared to be a customary perk. It was a rare opportunity for them to enjoy a delicacy of fresh, tender meat that still possessed a Soul, so they had even turned the occasion into a banquet.

Some of the plantations were not for growing crops, but for raising the Devotion Species—deformed creatures that knew nothing but eating, drinking, and putting on flesh to serve as food for the Combat Species and Divine Beasts. These creatures were mostly bio-engineered from various chicken, rabbit, and rat species. Every last one was grotesquely obese, and with their extremely rapid growth rate, they quickly became suitable rations.

Members of the Production Species would be there, collecting materials from the bodies of the Devotion Species—bones, meat, pelts, and feathers—for weaving and tanning. Surrounding every pasture were supporting work areas for the Production Species. It was a seamless system.

As they flew, Su Zhou observed over fifteen mines and twenty-seven plantations. All operated on the exact same model, repeating day after day, never changing.

Not a single beast questioned any of this. The relationships between the Divine Beasts, Combat Species, Production Species, Slave Species, and Devotion Species were as solid and binding as iron chains.

’They didn’t simply copy the template left by the Immortal Gods. Instead, they distilled its essence and created a system all their own.’

Even Su Zhou had to admit it. The Primordial Ancestors of the Divine Beasts, the architects of this system in the Beast God Realm, had been remarkably meticulous. They may not have adopted the civilizational blueprint left by the Immortal Gods, but they had clearly studied the knowledge the Immortals Gods left behind with great diligence. And from it, they had mastered the very quintessence of structure, Order, and exploitation.

Without this model of Order, the Divine Beasts of the Beast God Realm could never have ruled with such stability and longevity.

’Let’s say the Beast God Realm has ten billion Spirit Beasts. Of those, only seven or eight hundred million would be considered Production Species. Only a few tens of millions possess adequate intelligence and combat strength. And yet, only a few tens of thousands possess a Divine Beast Bloodline.’

He let out a long breath, muttering to himself, "This... is utterly sickening."

"Do you want to intervene?" Yara asked, her voice laced with temptation. "Don’t you despise worlds like this the most? Crush those Divine Beasts, set this world right—you have the power to do it."

"Not now."

Su Zhou replied calmly. He stood on Jin Qiong’s back, arms crossed, gazing at the endless river of clouds before them. "Right now, I am the Deputy Captain of Zhengguo’s Reconnaissance Team for the Beast God Realm’s Tree of Life. I’m not just Su Zhou. I bear the responsibility of completing my mission."

"And responsibility is more important than personal desire. But then again, no one ever said the two were in conflict, or that I couldn’t have both."

「Another half hour passed.」

Ahead, a warning came from the Europe Action Team.

"We have reached the intersection of the Feather Race’s border and the core region of the Tree of Life. Large numbers of Feather Race troops are stationed here. Moving forward, we should expect to face raids from numerous airborne Beast Soldiers."

Rafael, the captain of the Europe Action Team, spoke in a calm voice. "Pathfinding is pointless from here on out. We will act as a decoy and draw off some of the airborne Beast Soldiers for you. Don’t worry. While they are numerous, their individual strength is low. They pose no threat to our safety."
