'Even a civilization belonging to us Divine Beasts is still a civilization... No matter how savage and fierce, no matter how disliked by the Immortal Gods, it is still a civilization.'
The earnest teachings of the Primordial Ancestors flashed through Ghost Car's mind like an epiphany.
'That's right, the Primordial Ancestors said it long ago. They spoke of this possibility... but all the Divine Beasts had forgotten.'
Greed had gnawed away at their minds, and desire had drowned their Souls. Based on their own whims, they had plunged other beings into grief and bloodshed. Though they possessed immense power, it only caused their civilization to stagnate. Their great Talents granted them innate might, yet left them perpetually unsatisfied. Civilization taught them exploitation, and wisdom made them cold and merciless.
The Divine Beasts wanted too much, yet felt too little. Their lives were devoid of friendship and sympathy, to say nothing of pity.
Even as this realization dawned, the stubbornly ignorant Divine Bird still couldn't grasp the painstaking efforts of its Primordial Ancestors. Besides, it was far too late now.
So, it turned to Su Zhou, who had nearly caught up, and shrieked a hateful curse. "Damned Scale Race! You abominable Monster! Why won't you just let me go?! We had no quarrel to begin with! You were the ones who trespassed in our Forbidden Land! If this is about what I did before, I'm willing to apologize... But why? Why won't you give me a single chance!?"
Just then, Su Zhou caught up to the Divine Bird Ghost Car.
At the very last moment, he finally opened his mouth and spoke his first words since the start of the battle.
Su Zhou: "I'm hungry."
There were no complex thoughts, no excess of evil thoughts. He simply, plainly, stated a desire as primal as any beast's.
But to the Divine Bird, those words were a chill that pierced its very Soul.
'I'm going to be eaten...' The evil Monster that had always fed on other intelligent life had never imagined that it would, in turn, be eaten by an even more evil, more ferocious, more powerful, and more unreasonable Monster.
It had never imagined that it, too, could become the prey.
'This shouldn't be happening... This can't be happening!'
Indignation flooded the Divine Bird's heart, and it attempted one last act of defiance. But the Giant Dragon simply reached down from on high with a heavy claw as solid as a mountain peak. He crushed the two heads Ghost Car had tried to attack him with, as easily as squashing two liquor-filled chocolates.
Then, he took aim at the neck of Ghost Car's final head and bit down.
CRUNCH. The crisp sound of breaking bone echoed as blood sprayed forth. From the headless avian body, a single, deep purple feather tinged with a faint cyan light drifted down.
Ghost Car was dead.
Chewing its flesh and blood, Su Zhou floated in midair, his eyes closed.
"It tastes awful," he commented. "Too many evil thoughts. Just how many intelligent beings did this thing eat? Taking one bite was like consuming hundreds, even thousands, of other Souls!"
Su Zhou swallowed the mouthful of flesh. "Truly disgusting," he said with some revulsion. "But I was hungry. And I never waste food."
And so, the feast continued.
And so it was, high above the trembling, terrified soldiers of the Beast God Realm Alliance Army, none of whom dared to move an inch, that the great Dragon devoured the Divine Bird.
Then, he lowered his gaze to the Spirit Beasts below, all of whom were trembling, not daring to meet his eyes.
The sun rose behind him.
Daylight had come.
