The secretary at the door saw Finn Chandler slip and fall, and cried out to her in fright.
In mid-air, Finn flung out her hand, trying to grab something beside her, but there was nothing around, nothing she could catch.
At the moment she fell, her mind went completely blank. After she heard the loud "bang," she lay there stunned for a while, as if she couldn’t hear the secretary’s panicked shouts, only feeling that everything was so quiet.
It was the pain in her belly that pulled her thoughts back, and then she smelled the heavy stench of blood.
"Madam, don’t be afraid, Mr. Ford will be here any minute."
The secretary gripped Finn’s hand, trying to comfort her.
Finn knew this fall was very serious. If she were just an ordinary woman, she wouldn’t be this scared—at worst she’d end up with a concussion or some kind of bruise.
But right now, she was pregnant.
The pain in her belly was contracting, hurting so much that tears rolled down one by one, and her consciousness started to blur.
It wasn’t long before the restroom door was shoved open hard. The man who came in scooped her up into the familiar circle of his arms, and in that moment, Finn’s tears fell even harder.
"I’m fine!"
She forced herself to fight the pain and pull her consciousness back, and told Julian Ford softly.
"Mm."
Julian answered her, then turned his head, his furious voice echoing in the restroom.
"Where’s the doctor, is the doctor here yet?!"
Since meeting Julian, Finn had never seen him so angry.
The people who had come with him had also never seen Mr. Ford this anxious.
Under their urging, the doctor and ambulance arrived quickly. Finn was pushed into the ambulance, then into the hospital. Julian kept a tight grip on Finn’s hand the whole time.
He had never been this panicked and terrified before.
When the secretary called to say something had happened to Finn, he hadn’t even pushed open the restroom door yet when the strong smell of blood hit him.
The smell of blood made him throw all his strength into forcing the door open, only to see Finn lying in a pool of blood.
That scene was something Julian Ford would probably never forget for the rest of his life.
"Mr. Ford, the pregnant woman’s condition is quite critical, you..."
Outside the operating room, Julian watched Finn being taken inside. The doctor first briefly explained the situation to him.
"Save the mother."
Before the doctor could finish, Julian replied without the slightest hesitation.
The doctor froze for a second, not expecting Julian to be so direct, though he hadn’t intended to ask "save the mother or save the child."
"You must save her."
Julian looked at the doctor again and said.
"We’ll do our best to save both."
The doctor turned and went in. Julian stared at the operating room door as it closed, not moving his feet at all.
Mrs. Ford rushed over when she got the news. Seeing Julian standing there like an idiot, motionless, she softly asked, "How is Finn?"
For a pregnant woman, a fall is a serious matter.
Even if the baby makes it, it would be premature, and the fear is there might be sequelae.
"I told the doctors to save the mother."
Julian came back to himself and spoke to Mrs. Ford.
Mrs. Ford was stunned for a moment.
"Mom, I can’t lose her."
"It hasn’t reached the point of choosing between mother and child yet." Mrs. Ford didn’t know what to say, but seeing Julian like this, as a mother, she felt awful.
"Don’t be too anxious."
"Finn will be fine, and the baby will be fine too."
Mrs. Ford continued to comfort him.
Julian said nothing more. He stood there, his eyes locked tightly on the operating room door.
Looking at him in this lost, hollow state, Mrs. Ford felt a bit dazed.
With a perfect, sensible, and filial son, all the society ladies around her envied her.
