Mr. Ford raised his glass to Fiona Ford.
Fiona lifted her glass with her boyfriend and downed the wine in it.
Her boyfriend looked very much in love with Fiona; after getting Mr. Ford’s approval, he knocked back glass after glass of baijiu, and kept assuring Mr. Ford again and again that he would treat Fiona well.
Those words made Mr. Ford very happy.
Fiona herself wasn’t actually that happy; as she sat there, she would occasionally glance sideways at Julian Ford and Finn Chandler across from her.
The two of them treated themselves like invisible people at the dinner table; they let Mr. Ford be as happy as he wanted, let him say whatever he wanted to Fiona, while they ate their own food and flaunted their own love.
Fiona pressed every bit of resentment in her heart down to the very bottom.
After being hit by Finn, she couldn’t even go complain to Mr. Ford; before he came back, she’d gone into the bathroom to put on makeup and cover up the nail marks on her.
"Just sleep at home tonight."
As they ate, Mr. Ford got carried away and said this.
As soon as the words fell, Mrs. Ford set down her chopsticks.
"I already had someone clear out Fiona’s room."
She was indirectly telling Mr. Ford that Fiona couldn’t stay at The Ford Family home.
You could say she was giving Fiona a bit of face.
"No need, Dad."
Fiona knew the score; she knew Mrs. Ford didn’t like her.
"Isn’t the guest room empty?"
"Just let Fiona stay at home!"
The Eldest Master Ford looked at Mrs. Ford and insisted.
Julian and Finn stayed silent and kept out of it.
"Fiona’s found a boyfriend and gotten married; she’s even less likely to move back in." The Eldest Master Ford said painfully. The daughter he’d raised was going to marry out; it was something he found hard to accept.
"When we first brought Fiona home, she was so little, and now in the blink of an eye she’s grown up and is getting married."
As Mr. Ford spoke, his eyes reddened.
He was a man who was easily moved, unlike Mrs. Ford, who could see straight through to the essence of things and was never fooled by appearances.
Only, watching Mr. Ford getting upset, Mrs. Ford hesitated.
Mrs. Ford was mulling over how to answer in a way that could talk Mr. Ford out of the idea of letting Fiona stay.
If this had been before, she wouldn’t have cared about Mr. Ford’s feelings at all; if she said no, that meant no, and she’d just forcefully drive the person out.
She couldn’t do that lately! She had to be careful not to agitate Mr. Ford and send his blood pressure skyrocketing.
"I’m already very happy just being able to come to The Ford Family’s place and eat together with Dad and Mrs. Ford."
Fiona spoke up with a laugh. "Dad, I’m doing quite well out there!"
Well?
No, she was not doing well at all.
Julian had sent her away on assignment to another place, and people at The Ford Corporation were all gossiping behind her back that she had ’fallen out of favor.’
In name, she was the Ford family’s eldest young lady, but the fact that she was adopted was no secret to anyone.
Back then, she hadn’t minded; she’d even had people spread the word that she would be the future Mrs. Ford.
Lots of people believed her when she said that.
The Ford Family had taken her in but never acknowledged her as their daughter—wasn’t it just so she could be Julian’s wife?
She kept on waiting and waiting, and in the end, Julian married Fiona.
Fiona was then kicked out of Solaria along with him, and when she came back, she was the butt of everyone’s jokes.
Before, she’d loved going to banquets, loved being fawned over. After returning, hardly anyone invited her to any events; if someone did invite her, she’d be pointed at and whispered about once she got there.
How could a life like that not drive Fiona crazy.
She felt all of this had been caused by Finn and Mrs. Ford.
