Song Min was furious, Anji could tell. However, she did not back down. If he truly wanted her dead, he would have struck her where she stood.

"Hands off my disciple!"

Whoosh!

Anji’s eyes barely kept up, but she knew Elder Shen was in the area. There was no way Song Min did not know about it. Not unless Pu Jianming did something to hide his presence.

Judging by the unimpressed look on Song Min’s face, he knew they were up to something and in cahoots. The betrayal of an old-time friend was one thing. The external interference was another.

As the unofficial right-hand man of the Mystical Qilin Sect, Elder Shen’s cultivation level was higher than Anji’s. However, between him and the Ghost General, it was obvious who was lacking.

With a wave of his sleeve, the red spider lilies mocked the cruel future Anji could not stop.

"Don’t interrupt us," Song Min glared at the old man and, with a flick of one finger, sent Elder Shen flying back, spitting out blood with severe organ ruptures.

Horrified by the turn of events, Anji stepped in, betting her life on the line. Although her present cultivation level was unstable and restricted, she should still be able to stabilise the internal injuries before they became worse.

"Elder Shen, please don’t interfere. It’s an order from the ninth successor. Pu Jianming is not a traitor, but he is also far from guilt. The disciplinary actions can come later. You are no match for the real enemy."

Behind her, Song Min watched as Anji showed her medical skills. Pu Jianming writhed under his control disgustingly now that his former teacher was here. Truthfully, nobody else mattered more than Zhao Anji. He did not have to kill the elder of the Mystical Qilin Sect of his old friend, whom he had manipulated for years. They were not his enemies. However, he would not hold back if they struck first.

Anji knew Song Min’s temper. She dared not test it further. To minimise conflict and damage, she sutured Elder Shen’s shattered meridians with energy threads. The delicate treatment required her full concentration. One wrong move and she would suffer its backlash.

The treatment was temporary. It took nearly fifteen minutes for Anji to place the final stitch, but someone else had little patience. Fifteen minutes were enough for Pu Jianming to decide he was going to change the Crystal Lake Town’s array into a trapping mechanism.

"Old Pu, when have I ever mistreated you?" Song Ming questioned calmly, even with the array spell now deeply binding his physical body. "You wound me."

With one look, Anji could tell the array spell would not hold. Song Min was merely toying with them.

"Senior Pu! Don’t!"

It was perhaps too late. Once the wheel of fate was set in motion, it could not be stopped. Anji, weakened from the surgery, could only watch as Pu Jianming sealed his own death warrant.

At this crucial moment, the patient behind her reacted more quickly. Before Song Min could break the array trap and redirect damage back to the caster, Elder Shen had already fixed the weak point with a counter that rebounded on the Ghost General.

Hissing at the damage from the little trick, Song Min’s fury turned to the nosy elder. Even if his eternal rival was standing guard in front of him, Elder Shen would not escape unscathed today. After all, he threw the first punch twice now. The ghost general had little patience left. He had come too far to risk everything.

Ignoring his old friend for now, Song Min dashed towards Elder Shen. Anji panicked. Even in her weakened state, she prayed her feeble attempt to cast a barrier spell would at least slow the assailant down and buy time for Elder Shen to get out of harm’s way.

The barrier spell worked as effectively as the paper screen on sliding doors. Elder Shen closed his eyes at the moment Anji’s spell barrier cracked. Perhaps this was for the best. He should atone for the sins of raising a foolish student.

"Shifu, watch out!"

Pu Jianming’s voice rang out clearly, and Anji felt a warm splatter from behind her landing on her nape. The scent of iron soon filled the air, and she froze in disbelief, still staring at the empty spot where the senior researcher had been moments before.

Wide eyes meeting wider golden eyes, Pu Jianming stared at the true face of his old friend. Song Min ceased breathing, unsure what to do. It had not been his intention to kill Pu Jianming, merely to incapacitate him temporarily.

"Ah Song," blood dribbled down the side of Pu Jianming’s lips, a gurgling sound heard in his speech. "If you truly considered me as your friend, please don’t harm any more of the people I wish to protect."

Anji finally tore her gaze away to look behind her. Song Min’s arm reached out, protruding from Song Min’s chest, just inches from Elder Shen’s face, right above her. The blood that splattered on her dripped from Song Min’s fingertips, and she screamed.

Like a siren that shattered the silence, Song Min retracted his arm and took several steps back. The scholarly man collapsed like an unsupported sack of rice, and Elder Shen caught him.

"Ming-er!" he sobbed, trying to stop the profuse bleeding by blocking major meridians. Likewise, Anji did what she could, pushing her limits and eating into her artificial core reserves, threatening their stability.

However, right before she could regenerate the hole in Pu Jianming’s chest, Anji felt someone scoop her up from behind. Before she knew it, she was hoisted on someone’s shoulders and carried quickly into the distance, leaving behind a dying patient.

"No! Let me down, I have to save him!" she pounded her little fists into Song Min’s back, which felt like solid rocks. It did not seem to cause him pain the same way it did to her.

Not one to listen, Song Min merely overpowered her nervous system and rendered her unconscious. Spilt water is hard to recover. Old Pu’s death was a tragic accident, but he still had plans to execute.

Now that the array spell was broken, corpses littered the town. Without the array maintaining the villagers’ lifespan and souls, this place will soon become infested with undead out of his control. To prevent that, he did his silly friend one last favour and torched the place up, pouring a jar of high-quality wine in his name. Then, he was gone with Anji into the shadows of night. Elder Shen’s fate was now in his own hands.
