Murim's Weakest Princess

Chapter 328: Double Hostage

It took nearly two weeks for Anji to recover enough and give Song Min his first minor injury. It was not a huge deal. The Ghost General was more skilled at combat than Anji. If not for the element of surprise, her petty tricks would never have gotten to him.

"If you’re playing around with spells, you must be well enough now. Come. I’ll take you to the patient who has been getting on my nerves lately."

Ghosts did not have regular senses like people. Anji learned early on that sticking a needle in Song Min’s arm did not hurt him. However, if the needle was imbued with enough soul qi, it would prick him just the same.

Feeling somewhat proud of her little vengeance, Anji followed Song Min. The only ones here worth giving Song Min a headache were those who shared her bloodline. It was reassuring to learn how Mingshen was still putting up a fight. No matter how busy Song Min was, he would still be sandwiched between the troublesome siblings.

It might not be a big thing, but during her recovery, Anji learned more about the kind of person Song Min was underneath the Ghost General persona. If they existed in the same timeline, they would have been great friends. Although Song Min was a righteous scholar, he had a cheeky side to him as well and found charm in pranks. Apparently, the scholar used to have younger siblings. His memory was a little foggy, and they were most likely dead by now, but Song Min was an older brother. That would explain how he seemed very familiar with taking care of children.

The walk was shorter than Anji imagined. To think that her second brother would be living this close to her without her knowing... Song Min’s ghostly arts were very powerful. She could not even sense Mingshen’s energy signature even when he was only two buildings away.

"I’ll have all your belongings shifted to this room so you can care for this stubborn patient better," Song Min told her outside the door. I suggest you duck at least five seconds after I open the door before entering. He has one of the pettiest tempers I’ve ever seen in a young man."

Feeling puzzled by that statement, Anji stood behind the door as Song Min opened it. She soon understood what he meant by pettiest temper.

For the first two seconds, nothing seemed to happen. However, Anji’s heart almost leapt out of her chest when a flurry of objects was tossed their way at the door.

With practised ease, Song Min caught it with ghostly powers. The objects ranged from an ink slab to vases and even hot tea. Only the hot tea made contact with Song Min’s face. Ordinarily, it would have scalded the skin off. However, Song Min only wiped it off with his sleeve.

"Are you quite done yet?" he asked calmly. "You’re scaring our guest."

From somewhere inside the room, Mingshen spat violently.

"I’m not falling for your stupid tricks," he glared. "Why don’t you come over here so that I can shove this up your— Anji?!"

Peeking from behind the door, Anji studied the state of her oldest brother. Mingshen looked nothing like his usual dignified manner. He was pale and thin, and his hair was in a tangled mess. His face was gaunt, and his eyes almost bulging out of their sockets, a terrible sign of liver failing. Song Min had not been lying after all. Mingshen was in a critical condition and still putting up a fight.

"Brother Mingshen!" Anji ran up to him, concerned. "What are you doing?!"

Staggering from the weight of a ten-year-old pulling at his sleeve, Mingshen was ultimately wrestled into bed with Song Min watching by the door.

Anji ignored the annoying ghost. She had a critical patient to attend to.

"Anji..." Mingshen stared at his sister in disbelief. "Why are you here?"

Pausing in her inspection, Anji searched her head for an explanation. Should she say that she was kidnapped as a doctor while apprehending a false traitor? Or explain who Song Min really was. Either way, it was not an easy answer.

"I brought her here," Song Min replied on her behalf. For the first time, Anji felt slightly grateful to the mad scholar. However, his next words angered her again.

"I figured a double hostage situation might be more beneficial. In case you decide to kill yourself from sheer stubbornness, I have your obedient sister to bargain with."

Seething with unspoken rage, Mingshen reigned himself in. It would do no good to let Anji hear horrible words.

However, against all expectations, the older brother did not expect to hear a string of colourful words coming from his dear sister’s mouth. They sound nothing like the polite child who cared for even sparrows. Those weren’t even vocabulary their esteemed parents knew. It sounded as if Anji had been mingling in the back alleys for a while, and while Mingshen knew them through his job, it was surprising to hear them from Anji.

Song Min only laughed at the reaction of the teen behind Anji as she cussed. He hated the goody two-shoes act the most. It was nice to see a change with the siblings reunited. What a touching family reunion!

"If I knew you were going to be this entertaining together, I would have gathered your whole family to watch the show. Oh, I remember now. There’s another brother in the palace, isn’t there? Don’t worry. I won’t harm him. I’ll just bring him here to be reunited. The three of you are rather close, yes? A triple hostage situation might be better than a double hostage one."

Grabbing the nearest thing by the bedside that she could fit in one hand, Anji threw a spare pillow at Song Min’s face. The ghost general smirked infuriatingly and caught it with one hand, clicking his tongue in mock dismay.

"Learning from bad examples, what spoiled children you are," he lamented.

There was nothing much Anji could do but stew in her anger. If even Yihao was held hostage here, would there even be a way for her plans to succeed? Her third brother had to remain to help Hong Nian Niang and Liu Guiya purify the cursed scale. Thankfully, it did not seem like Song Min was aware of it yet.

"Be good," he told them, turning serious again. "Because I really might just fetch your other brother if your tantrums get out of hand. I promised not to harm your family, but there are no guarantees if anyone throws the first strike. So, recuperate properly like the good doctor and patient you are. I’m a busy man, so I’ll take my leave for now. Someone else will bring all your stuff over. If you need any medicine, write the prescription and brewing methods. They will prepare it accordingly."

As soon as he finished his piece, Song Min turned around and left. The door clicked shut with finality, and the seal trapped the siblings together in the rather spacious accommodation.

Feeling conflicted, Mingshen tried to apologise but ended up in a coughing fit.

"Talk later, brother Mingshen. We will have plenty of time anyway," Anji reasoned. For now, recovery was her top priority.
