Mushoku Tensei: Life and Strife.

Chapter 17: Once a killer, always a killer.

After the death of the rabbit, killing became much easier. There really wasn’t a need for anything difficult. Rather, it was a whole lot easier once you learned how to. Find a prey, limit its movements, and kill it. Over and over again.

But there were difficulties along the way. For one, it was staying hidden. Unlike humans, animals have sharper senses. I don’t know whether it was sight or smell, but if I got within a certain distance, the animal would immediately escape, failing the hunt instantly. Of course, with my knowledge of advanced magic, I can shoot them at range like using a gun. However, that, in turn, was the second problem.

Shooting far away lowers accuracy. There’s not much to say here. Think of a bullet shooting from far away. Light, wind, sound… Those factors affect where and what hits and everything. But unlike fighting in range, I can’t gather telekinesis strong enough to hold the target, so the target is capable of dodging. While I could guarantee not missing—at least by shooting the body—I cannot guarantee a one-shot, and watching the animals struggle with pain was never comfortable.

However, those were the more minor issues. If I use telekinesis and toss myself at them, I could effectively get within range. And as I got the gist of how to position myself, I managed to shoot them immediately once I got into range and effectively one-shot them. Blood spilling on me was a problem, but once I coated my body with a layer of mana, I stayed clean.

Of course, there were other problems, such as blood attracting more monsters, resulting in me changing to strangulation tactics. But things weren’t bad, I guess. I mean, I managed to learn a few more tricks up my sleeve.

The first was the ability to turn things into mana. Originally resulted from detoxification and cleansing. The theory was based on if things were in excess, even if they were good medication, they'd turn into poison. And when cleaning things with magic, it’s basically removing things. However, on both occasions, the law of energy conversion must be mentioned.

So, where did the energy go? They turned into mana of course. Therefore, it was possible to convert anything into mana; however, the ratio of conversion was still complicated.

What remains useful about it is that my caterpillar storage could absorb this mana; therefore, I didn’t need to feed them manually anymore. And so, I have two fat caterpillars. I intend to focus on making more so they could grow automatically. Whatever the case, I’m safe from environmental problems.

The second was that I could color mana. After all, the perception of colors, at the end of the day, was the result of how much color you reflect. For example, black is the color that absorbs all light, and white is the color that reflects all light. All you need to do is increase the density of mana. The only thing that I can do with it right now is blindfold a deer or something, so it wasn’t pretty useful. However, it proved something.

It is possible for mana to have properties. Originally—well, I’m still somewhat biased about it—I thought mana couldn’t do things on its own, which was needed for a Will and a string to cast telekinesis. However, if mana can have properties, then the string itself would become excessive.

More importantly, it could change weight. Like wearing a heavy suit or lightening your weight. While I can’t use aura, having a mana coat with special properties would make it similar to aura itself. Like in the North Style there was a method to increase the speed at the cost of strength. However, if I were manually changing the weight, it meant that I could theoretically max out my speed and pour everything into weight at the very last moment.

In short, Mass and Velocity squared equals Kinetic Energy, but to expand, my weight and the weight of the sword are different… Well, in short, the tip of my sword doesn’t have to work like a sword but a heavy axe…

I sound crazy at this point, but if you have a decent amount of knowledge on why an axe is used differently than a sword, then it’ll make more sense.

That said, there was one issue that I have to deal with.

“I need supplies.”

I muttered, staring at the ugly sketch of a map. While cleaning up food wasn’t a problem anymore, finding it became problematic. Obviously, if the place were packed with bulks of earth scented with blood, then no prey would think it’s a good place to stay. So I had to change into a better location. Preferably one with a water source.

Making water from water magic wasn’t a problem; the problem was the food. Obviously they have to drink, so the natural conclusion is to camp at water areas and hunt anything that gets near, right?

“And then there’s fish.”

I thought. Fish, my favorite dish… How do you cook fish? Ah whatever. If I catch one, I could figure something out then.

As I walked towards the river zone, what greeted me was the sight of a fat pig trying to drink water from the area. I don’t know how fat a normal pig usually is, but that is probably the fattest pig I’ve seen in my life. And it had lowered its guard.

I launch myself forward with fire magic, causing a boom behind me. I was scared that if I didn't draw the pig's attention from my direction, it might instead run into the river. I couldn't let a crocodile or whatever might be living inside that place steal my food, after all. The pig, suddenly interrupted by the noise, turned its head over to see what happened. But I was already within range. The pig’s eyes stared right into mine as I smiled brightly.

“Bye bye, bitch~”

[Earth Bullet]

The pig was bigger than most animals, so I decided to give it a little extra punch and chose the earth bullet instead of the normal wind bullet. And the pig, in shock… deflected the bullet with its front leg?

“Uh?”

This wasn't part of my script. I fell into the water as expected, but I knew what I saw. Did the pig just deflect my bullet with its front leg? The pig stared deeply into my eyes, recognizing the enemy before it as dangerous, stood up on its hind legs and whistled.

Yup. The fat pig stood up, and it whistled.
