Chapter 31: Laurel’s adventures ( 1 )

“Can I become an adventurer?”

I asked if I could, but surprisingly, he gave in almost readily. Honestly, I had expected him to reject my request immediately, just as he did when he told Rudeus to leave only at 12. Sylphie seems a lot calmer than when Rudeus left, probably because I told her she could do the same when she grew older.

After the dramatic sob and tears from Zenith and Lilia, I was finally able to leave… After having my bones nearly crushed by the hug monster—or monsters.

“I’m going to miss you.”

“Urgh. Mom. My back.”

“Wa wa, big brother, don’t go.”

“Big brother, nooo!”

“…”

I can feel the envious gaze of the old man burning on my back. Anyways… Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!

After a day’s journey—specifically six and a half hours of suffering from riding a carriage and a few more to wander—I was here. The Adventurer’s Guild.

“Welcome to the Adventures' Guild. What can I do for you?”

A lovely, well-endowed receptionist stood at the counter and chirped cheerfully when she saw me. She must really be in a good mood.

“Yes. Hello Ma’am. I would like to sign up for membership.”

“You… want to join the adventure’s guild?”

The lady froze for a moment, slightly confused.

“… Is there a problem?”

“Aren’t you a little too young?”

“Was there an age limit restriction?”

“Well, no, but… um… what about your guardian?”

Ah. It seems that she had common sense. Well, anyone with common sense wouldn't let a child go hunt monsters in a village. Unlike Paul.

“… Apparently my old man, who was a high-ranked adventurer, stayed home sulking in a corner because I beat him in a fight.”

“… I… see. Okay… Well, uhm… Please fill in this form.”

The lady tried to look calm as she handed the form. I was shorter than the desk, so the lady was trying to hand it to me through the counter. Not that it was necessary. With a flick of the wrist, the form flew into my hands, surprising the lady. Well, you have to show enough skills to prove how reliable you are for the job either way.

I quickly jolted down the details of my identity.

Name: Laurel Greyrat.

Gender: Male.

Race: Human.

Birth: K407.

Class… I paused for a moment. What do I write here? There was always the rule that one should hide a card or two in case something happens. And in adventuring, you’re essentially risking your life relying on strangers, especially when I’m a lone kid. Safety first.

But then which is more ideal? I could write down Intermediate Swordsmen and hide my magic. On the other hand, I could write the opposite, hiding that I’m a swordsman from my Saint-rank magic. I could pretend to be a low-rank thief and act cute. After all, tracking down foo—I mean pre—I mean monster. Tracking down monsters was something I learned after hunting them for two straight months. I could cheat at gambling with magic as well… Hm…

“Is there a problem?”

“Ah, no, sorry. I was just having stray thoughts.”

At the end, I filled my class with two things. One of the classes I chose was Thief, which allowed me to access… certain things… And the other was a mage. Advanced rank. If anyone asks, I would simply claim to have reached enlightenment. What are they going to do about that?

Anyways, I gave the receptionist the paper and immediately handled my first quest… E-rank quest—A slime extermination quest with only 5 slimes… Uhm. Okay? Let's—Let's try an E-rank quest then. 6 goblins… uhm… why are they running away? H-Hey! I only shot three of you guys at once; come back!

“… C-Congratulations…?”

“… Thank you.”

Status.

Name: Laurel

Gender: Male.

Race: Human.

Birth: K407.

Class: Thief and (Saint) Advanced Rank Mage Class.

Adventure rank: D.

Total jobs finished: 1 F-rank job, 5 E-rank, and 10 D-rank jobs.

After notes: The speed was unprecedented. Careful attention might be warranted.

… After fooling around for a few more hours, I earned myself a nickname. The Purple-eyed Reaper, a new adventurer famed for decapitating slimes, goblins, assault dogs, a terminating boar, and whatever monster that was within my quests… Fuck. I was here for the adventure, not the murder. Stop gawking as if I were a serial killer.

At first when I came in, people were just looking and laughing at how ridiculous it was for someone so young to trot around, saying things like go back and drink your mother’s milk and such… I’m not sure this was making things better.

“Rudeus?”

“Huh?”

I turned backward, hearing a familiar name. There was a tall person behind me. As I looked up, I saw an Amazonian bandit cat lady staring down at me. We stared at each other for a moment.

“Ah, my mistake. You’re Paul’s other kid. Laurel, was it?”

“Yes, ma’am. It truly has been a while.”

“It certainly does, doesn’t it? So why are you here?”

“I could ask the same thing for you. Weren’t you supposed to be accompanying a young lady as a guard with my brother or something?”

“Ah, well…”

“Ghislaine! Over here—Eh?"

A cheery voice came to us as we looked towards the tiny red-haired figure prancing around the place while dragging what appears to be left of Rudeus. So, that was her, huh? Eris Greyrat. The notorious face puncher. I stared at her. Such a tiny and adorable creature was a menace that I do not want to entangle myself with.

She stared at me back and then turned to Ghislaine.

“Ghislaine! Who’s that?"

“That’s Laurel. Rudeus’s younger brother.”

“I see. I am Eris!”

She said with her arms cross while looking so high and mighty. I could see Rudeus’s leftovers right next to her.

“… Nice to meet you, Miss Eris. Glad to see you alive as well, brother.”

“… Likewise. But why are you here?”

“Oh my, dearest brother~ Yours truly had been approved by the old man to be independent.”

“Wait, what? How?”

“By rolling him all over the floor, of course!”

I said proudly while posing my biceps, which lacked the defined muscles to show off but still made its point. I had won the tutorial boss, so naturally I get to roam around and have fun. Suck on that! Rudeus, on the other hand, was staring at me dubiously as if he didn’t believe what I just said.

“You won against Paul?!”

“Indeed I have, brother."

“You won against Paul?”

This time it was Ghislaine who had asked the question.

“Yup! He played all his cards, but nothing could stop me from winning him. He even goes as far as running on—"

I stared at Ghislaine. Ghislaine stared back with a confused gaze.

“Ghislaine. You’re also a swordsman, right?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Wait, so if you’re a swordsman, then does that mean you could also spin swords and crawl on fours?”

“…”

I got a bump on my head. Turns out swordsmen are normal people wielding normal swords. Paul was the weird one. And I, who had begged him to teach me how to run on all fours, was even weirder. Damn it, Paul.

“Wait, who’s this Paul guy?”

“Ah, right, you don’t know him. Paul’s an old friend of mine, specifically these two’s father.”

Eris and Ghislaine were talking in the background, but I was busy remembering my dog-walking lessons.

“Come on, Laurel, you've got to crawl like this!”

“Wooho! Brother a dog!”

“Uwu! Big brother a good dog! Aisha wants to ride big brother.”

“Aisha darling, you shouldn’t do that. I’m sorry, young master Laurel.”

“But Mom, why~”

...Damn it, Paul. Fuck. No, really. Where the hell did you learn that stuff? In a dog cage or something?

“But do you have anywhere to stay?”

“Huh?”

My attention was abruptly dragged back by Ghislaine’s voice.

“It’s getting dark.”

Ghislaine said. I turned to the sky and realized that it was the evening already. At the rate where I’m going, it seems that I won’t make it home in time.

“How about staying at Boreas then?”

She recommended. It was a pretty optimal idea, but…

“Really? Are you sure I can stay there?”

“Of course you can! Because I say so!”

The one to answer that was Eris. Well, since she was the one who said so, then naturally it was fine. And so, I followed the trio home.
