Today was the seventh day of the week. Eris’s free day. The second time she was freed from the constant torture of math... Yeah, I feel you, girl. The four of us went for a tour. The Fittoa region’s Citadel of Roa… was surprisingly small; you could circle the entire thing in two hours by walking.
Prices were wild. An aphrodisiac’s worth 1 to 10 gold coins. Books are worth 10 in gold. On a salary of two silver coins per month like an average person, there was no way anyone could afford that. And that hasn’t counted the fact that those expenses are often used for other daily necessities. Urgh, the scent of the privilege. To think the day I empathize with a common beggar would come… Should I start new side jobs like Roxy?
Actually, why not? I mean, water was never a problem, and an average-quality inn was about a large copper coin at most. It would seem difficult to achieve; however, I was strong—at least stronger than Paul.
It meant that as long as I prepared myself thoroughly, soloing B-ranked missions like Rudeus in the novel was an option, especially considering that I am currently stronger—as in a whole lot stronger and sharper—than that version of Rudeus as of the current. I would pull my weight in any team.
Not only that, I could also try out magic tools to research properly and sell those. It’ll probably go in between silver and gold, so I’ll be able to live a decent life if needed be.
Let’s ignore the hypothesis of whether it was impossible or not. I am already a B-rank adventurer. It was kinda crazy, to be honest. C-rank quests were more difficult to succeed in than D-rank. Even I had a hard time conquering it.
I even had to ditch a C-rank quest once. It was a quest about tracking down a creature causing mayhem to a village and eradicating it. I managed to track down the creature but lost it. It was a tiger. With one blow, it smashed through my five-layer intermediate shield.
Of course, I managed to scare it off with blinding lights, disorienting its vision, and thunderbolting it once. Despite directly getting hit and being disoriented, it manages to take cover behind a tree, dodging the other two strikes I had in store. And before I knew it, the tiger had bolted far away into the woods, escaping.
If it hadn’t, the battle could have ended completely differently. If it had chosen to bolt at me instead, I might not have reacted to it in time, getting rammed and dying on the spot. On the other hand, it was in a disoriented state, so it might have been missing, ensuring its demise. It might have realized that the odds were slightly tilted in my favor, opting to preserve its survival rather than risking it.
And because I didn’t want to be demoted for failing, I switched to a D rank quest immediately when it happened. I heard that Quest became the talk of the town, eventually taken by a party named Stepped Leader. That said, I have no idea what exactly had happened, though.
Thinking back, perhaps using thunder was a mistake. It was strong, sure, but it made too much noise and blew up my cover. I’ve been relying on it too much. That might bite me in the back. Eventually, after grinding and training against Eris, inevitably my defenses had gone up by a whole new level, assisting me in dealing with more difficult quests.
I didn’t touch a single B-rank quest because I wasn’t sure that I’d survive a failed subjugation quest. Well, I probably would, considering how high Ghislaine evaluated me, but it wasn’t worth the risk. I MIGHT try after preparing myself more thoroughly, though.
Funnily enough, on the ninth year I had entered this world, aka my birthday, I was greeted by a sudden announcement as a gift.
“Congratulations for reaching B rank, Laurel!”
“Eh-eh?”
By the time I had noticed it, I had already torn through 50 C-rank quests… Where the heck did all those C-rank quests come up from anyway? Were they all piled up for me to clean or something? From the time I started to now, I had spent a total of nearly 2 years grinding to level up my rank during my stay at Eris’s house… Which was a lot, but considering that people spend years but never reach it, it was quite unprecedented.
The guild even had a recheck on my background, but after finding out that my old man was Paul, they backed off. I mean, Paul was famous as an S-ranked adventurer, but to the point where a random receptionist would know it that well? Wait, never mind, she was just a huge fan of the Fangs of the Black Wolf.
…
Anyway, let’s ignore the irrational ramblings I had all morning. Lately, Edna, the etiquette teacher, was teaching Eris how to dance, which failed and ended up in Rudeus’ hands, in which I was caught trying to learn how to dance in secret. That… that was quite an embarrassing event for me.
E-hem, anyway, Eris’s tenth birthday went well, and I got the front seat to the novel scenarios. Which honestly was better than I had expected. A little dance here and there and the party ends. I joined in on the dance as well here and there, and it was quite fun.
Anyway… A bit of yada yada, and now, boredom starts to kick in. I mean, I was a child in body and developer at heart; I made stuff, and I sometimes played with them. But there’s nothing new, and I’m bored. I staved off boredom by doing pointless things like learning telepathy, playing survival with Eris, training, doing mindless quests, and finally reaching B rank, but yeah, I’ve been at it for too long. It’s all tiring. I want something new to play with.
Speaking of play… I stared at the stairs. I knew for sure that it was leading to the tallest tower, though I have no idea why exactly it was off limits. Considering that I was family and that this house isn’t filled with illegal activities, I could say that in the off chance of getting caught, I would come out unscathed.
Curiosity kills the cat, but I am a cat, and I am curiosity, so what’s stopping me from doing what I want? Hell, I even developed the Chameleon Camouflage spell, all thanks to a certain young lady.
And so, I went. And… wow. Oh, my wow. I could feel my face burning up. Sauros was… uh… having fun with one of the cat-eared maids. Degeneracy really runs thick in the blood. Having a house full of cute cat maids to fool around with is… tempting. Wait. No. Let's—Let's stop there.
Anyway, Sauros caught me. It wasn’t much of a crime or anything, and despite being seen, he continued with his conquest. Rather, it seems like my appearance had made the adultery play more exciting for them. Sauros claimed that he was up here praying to the single red gem in the sky. I squeezed my eyes to see what he was on about.
When I saw that gem, I knew what I forgot. I fucked up. Bad.
