Chapter 799: Chapter 785: From the Mist
When the mist finally swept by, everyone was still in the fortress, only the ground beneath their feet was no longer Lar Fortress.
The city walls were higher, the battlements more densely packed, and inside the city, several towering towers could be seen, their flagpoles flying banners with a style reminiscent of human nobility yet bearing unknown emblems.
Fortunately, no one was scattered.
The commander was contemplating a headcount and reconnaissance arrangements when a neat sound of footsteps came from around the corner.
A squad of soldiers emerged one after the other, their armor style completely different from theirs.
The breastplates were thicker, the shoulder pads towering, and the helmets adorned with dark red plumes.
The leader appeared to be a general, with an old scar slashing from the edge of his brow to the corner of his mouth on the left side of his face.
He walked straight up to the commander, without greetings or introductions, and directly instructed with the authority of a superior, "Those guys have become a threat. We can only hold firm here! The southwest two sides are left to you. If you fail... I hope you’ve already died on the walls. If not, even if those bugs don’t eat you, I’ll put you on the guillotine afterward."
"What bugs..." The commander hadn’t finished asking when the alarm bell on the city wall was struck.
Atop a high tower, a mage leaned half their body out, pointed their magic staff towards the east, and a colorful sphere of light detached from the staff tip, flying towards the wilderness.
The sphere exploded mid-air, distorting the distant light, revealing the figures of joint-legged creatures on the previously empty wilderness!
Someone immediately recognized those creatures: "Chis?!"
The area affected by the colorful sphere was large, but it only illuminated part of the insects. How many there truly were remained unknown.
The commander’s scalp tingled, and he turned back to yell at the still-dazed soldiers behind him: "To the walls! Quickly!"
Vera and the others were no exception, following the crowd up the battlements.
Fei Yin climbed a high tower and, together with other mages, cast the revealing colored orb spell. The light spheres exploded one after another outside the city, leaving the invisible insect swarms nowhere to hide.
Dense carapaces pressed together, stretching from the base of the city wall to the horizon!
Some six-clawed worms had already climbed the walls, their sharp forelimbs wedged into cracks in the stones, scampering up several meters at a time. Fei Ling shot an arrow through the head of the nearest insect, purple blood sprayed, and the body tumbled down, crashed into the pile of insects below.
But more insects continued to climb, stepping on the bodies of their comrades. The battle instantly reached a fever pitch.
Fortunately, although this city’s defense system wasn’t as robust as Lar Fortress, it was still quite a stronghold, at least sparing Vera and the others from worrying about the insects digging through the walls too quickly.
The insects pounded the western walls wave after wave. After transferring most of their forces to this side, collaborating with the Pukis, they barely managed to suppress the insects.
Vera crouched behind the battlements, firing an explosive crossbow downward, a burst of flame cracked open in the insect swarm, shredding a few insects to pieces, purple blood scattered.
He had just readied a second crossbow arrow when a soldier next to him suddenly shouted, "Not good!"
Glancing over, Vera saw that soldier’s face had turned white.
"What’s wrong?"
"Something’s wrong. I’ve dealt with them at sea. How could these insects be so single-minded as to all charge one spot?" That soldier stared at the surging tide of insects below the city, the veins on his forehead throbbing, "They’re feigning an attack to divert attention!"
Before the words were fully spoken, he had already started racing towards the command center.
The commander at Lar Fortress, although unfamiliar with Chis, took the ’experienced’ soldier’s suggestion very seriously.
He not only called back some soldiers from the west wall to reinforce the south but also sent people to monitor the other walls, promising to report any movements immediately.
However, this increased the pressure on the south wall dramatically, with insects even climbing the battlements several times. Vera’s curved saber was finally stained with blood.
However, the awkward part was that these insects in the Mist Illusion Realm were indeed persistent.
From start to finish, they stubbornly attacked one direction, without flank maneuvers, ambushes, or even tactics.
Vera and the others’ defenses only led to unnecessary casualties on their side.
Nevertheless, while the insects had no tricks, their prowess was formidable.
A gigantic silhouette appeared on the horizon beyond the city!
Tentacles lined with sharp teeth as thick as century-old tree trunks, carapace as substantial as the city walls.
It squeezed out from behind the insect horde, each movement causing the walls to slightly tremble.
Giant Touch-toothed Beast!
The monster’s tentacles slammed into the wall, where a few soldiers screamed, crushed into blood pulp.
Vera’s blade sliced in, purple blood gushing out, but it was far from enough to hinder such a gigantic monster’s actions.
Even worse, a second tentacle swept sideways, directly striking the nearby spellcaster’s tower.
The tower body fractured, leaning, and Fei Yin was still atop—she did not know Wind-type Flying Magic.
Vera sprinted wildly towards the tilting tower, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Fei Yin, jump!"
Hearing the call, Fei Yin hastily leaped, but was struck by a falling fragment from the tower’s tip, preventing her from jumping far enough.
Even with Vera leaping forward, he was just shy of reaching her.
In that crucial moment, an arrow flew in from the side, piercing Fei Yin’s robe, pulling her slightly towards Vera.
"I’ve got you!" Vera tightly embraced Fei Yin, adjusting their position as they fell downwards.
The tower collapsed with a thunderous crash, dust billowing.
On the walls, Fei Ling, who had just shot that arrow, watched worriedly until she saw Vera emerging from the rubble holding Fei Yin, only then did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
However, the battle was not over.
The giant Touch-toothed Beast, withstanding the army’s attacks, forcibly breached a gap in the city wall, and the insects screeched as they poured in...
...
After an unknown period, the mist withdrew, revealing the Lar Fortress it had engulfed.
The fortress remained intact, but over half of its soldiers were gone, the Pukis nearly depleted.
They finally found the Eye Worm controlling everything among the insect swarm, which Fei Ling shot and killed, yet by that time, the casualties were already grave.
Those who died in the mist wouldn’t even leave their bodies behind.
Even those who survived were mostly left with injuries ranging from light to severe.
Thankfully, with the presence of the mycelium, even severely injured soldiers could survive.
Vera found Fei Ling and Fei Yin; they had been forced to separate late in the battle.
Seeing them both alive, Vera let out a heavy sigh of relief.
Fei Ling had gained several wounds, her clothing and armor torn in several places, revealing flesh covered with dried purple blood and dirt, but she could still stand. She raised the last arrow in her hand at him, grinning wryly, "I took care of that last Eye Worm. I think they should award me a noble title."
"Vera..." Fei Yin, holding a magic staff, wore a mournful look.
She was unharmed, but the magic staff was broken, the half with the magic crystal missing, the break marked with deep tooth marks.
Vera approached and pulled the two of them into a close embrace, squeezing tight as if afraid something might separate them again: "I’ll get you a better magic staff when we return. It’s so good to see you’re safe."
"Vera!"
Fei Yin hugged him back.
Fei Ling hesitated for a moment but quickly embraced Vera as well.
Under the setting sun, the three of them held onto each other tightly, survivors of the ordeal, while nearby soldiers, witnessing this scene, couldn’t help but laugh and curse Vera’s luck.
No one noticed the streak of crimson emerging from the direction the mist retreated, flying rapidly.
Blood Manipulation: Ten Thousand Arrows.
The crimson blob exploded in midair, transforming into hundreds of slender red arrows.
Fei Ling abruptly shoved Vera and Fei Yin aside, and in their puzzled gaze, one of the blood arrows pierced Fei Ling’s forehead.
She gently fell to the ground like a withered leaf in the autumn wind, raising a small cloud of dust.
"Enemy attack!"
"Blood Manipulation, it’s the Empire’s Blood Race!"
"Quick, activate the fortress defenses!"
"Impossible! Many runes have been damaged by the mist!"
"Damn it! Why, why would the Empire show up now when the mist has just..."
The fortress dissolved into chaos, footsteps, shouting, and the dull thuds of crossbows firing merged into one, surging from all directions.
But Vera heard nothing.
He knelt on the ground, hands suspended by Fei Ling’s side, not knowing where to touch.
Outside the city, Duke Levi, riding a war beast, swept away the lingering mist with a wave, his crimson cloak hanging motionless, backed by the dark mass of the Empire’s army.
He raised his hand, pointing towards Lar Fortress.
"Advance."
