The translucent barrier fell. Dust hung in the air. The cracked stone floor steamed. Thomas was still on one knee, breathing like a forge.
Then the girls moved.
Kira was first. She vaulted the edge of the stands, boots skidding on broken rubble, and she was at Lynx’s side before the dust even settled.
Emily came right after, faster than Lynx had ever seen her move without wind. Lira was last, phone still clutched in her hands, green hair stuck to her forehead with sweat.
They circled him like he might break.
"Are you hurt?" Kira’s hands were already on his shoulders, his arms, checking. Her voice was sharp, but her soft but wide eyes were doing something else entirely. "Did he—"
"I’m fine," Lynx said, and he meant it. Primordial Healing had already closed the cut on his cheek. The ache in his knuckles was gone. "You guy’s don’t need to worry. As you can see I’m not weak."
Emily exhaled like she’d been holding it for thirty minutes. "You’re bleeding."
"Was," Lynx corrected, wiping the last speck of dust from his jaw with the back of his hand.
"All Gone."
Lira didn’t say anything. She just stared. Her big green eyes were glassy, her lips parted. She was playing with the hem of her skirt like she didn’t know what to do with her hands. Like she was afraid if she touched him, he’d disappear.
Kira noticed. She straightened up and crossed her arms, and the adoration in her gaze cracked into something tired and honest.
"Guess I’m never catching up to you," she said quietly. Not quite bitter. Just... fact.
Lynx turned to her. He reached up and cupped her face, thumb brushing under her eye where the tension lived. Her skin was warm.
"You will one day," he said. "Don’t worry."
But he knew she wouldn’t. Not in this lifetime. Even if she went to the Forbidden Zone, well she’ll probably die before the first second wave ends. But he said it anyway, because Kira needed fuel to burn.
"You just have to train harder," he continued, voice low enough clearly not meant for the kneeling teacher to hear. "And besides I’ll be here to protect you. Always."
Kira’s throat bobbed. She leaned into his hand for a second before pulling back, pretending she hadn’t.
Lynx turned. "And you," he said to Emily, and her whole body straightened like she’d been called to attention.
Emily blinked, then smiled, small and real. Her face going red. "Thanks."
"And you, Lira. I’ll be here to protect you too."
Lira jolted. Her head snapped up. "M-me?"
Lynx looked at her. There was something about her that pulled him closer to her. The green hair, the big eyes, the way she was twisting her skirt until her knuckles went white. She was looking at him like he was a deity and she was afraid to pray too loud.
He couldn’t help it. She was fucking cute.
He stepped forward and pressed a quick kiss to the tip of her nose.
Lira’s face went nuclear. Red flooded her cheeks, her ears, her neck. She made a sound like a squeak and immediately buried her face in both hands.
"Ah—! I—I—"
Lynx laughed, low and amused. "You’re too enchanting. Couldn’t resist."
From the side, Kira’s eyes narrowed. Possessive. Jealous. But she didn’t say anything. Not yet.
Emily, meanwhile, was staring at Lira’s burning face with an expression that clearly said: ’why wasn’t that me.’
Thomas’s voice cut through the moment, rough and amused.
"Ahem."
All four of them turned. The big man was standing now, rolling his shoulders, wincing. He looked at Lira, then at Lynx.
"You. Green haired girl. Send the kid the video," Thomas said. "He can send it to me after. I want to see how bad I got my ass kicked."
Lira fumbled with her phone, still red. "Y-yes, Teacher!"
"Good." Thomas cracked his neck one last time. "Kid. Good fight. Don’t die out there.. I know you wouldn’t though."
"I’ll try not to," Lynx said.
Thomas snorted and walked off, already yelling at maintenance staff about the arena cracked floor.
---
They left the arena ten minutes later.
Word had spread lynx was passing by and by the time they hit the courtyard, juniors were already lining the paths, phones out.
"Lynx!"
"Look, it’s him!"
"He really defeated Teacher Jace?. He looks so tall and handsome. Like an Angel not meant for battle."
Some were whispering. Some were recording. A group of Year 1 girls in the back had matching tattoos on their forearms —a silver crescent with a lightning bolt through it. Lynxcrushers.
One of them saw him looking and immediately burst into tears.
Lynx couldn’t just stand there. These were his fans, he had to care although he didn’t care about the boys. They could go fuck themselves.
Don’t cry," Lynx said, and he walked over, her small boobs reaching his stomach. He was 6’2 and she was like 5ft or 5’1. He let them take pictures. He hugged two of the other girls when they ran at him, and that’s when it got out of hand.
More came.
"Smell him!" One girl yelled.
"He smells like—like heaven!"
"I’m gonna faint, I swear—"
One girl actually did, dramatic and everything, collapsing into her friend’s arms.
"Okay, okay," Emily stepped in, hands up. "Back up. Give him space."
Kira was already pulling the clingiest ones off. "He’s not a scented candle."
Lira was the scariest. She didn’t yell. She just stepped in front of Lynx, green eyes flat cold, and said in a voice that didn’t match her cute face, "Touch him again and I’ll turn you all to mice meat and feed you all to the hungry beasts in the Academy Forests."
The crowd scattered. Suddenly finding excuses to leave. Some other sturbbon girls didn’t want to leave. But under Kira, Emily and Lira cold, intense stare that says. ’Try me and see hell’ they eventually left.
Lynx watched Lira, eyebrows raised. "Damn, Lira. Didn’t know you had that in you." That was so hot to him. He didn’t know why but, his soul has just gotten attached to Lira. All his black soul. She was different. Looking at Him like a fucking Diety. Worshipping him with her eyes.
Lira turned back to him and immediately went red again. "I...I was just—"
"Protective," Kira finished for her, with a pointed look. "We get it."
They kept walking toward the Year 2 Girls building. The sun was starting to dip, painting everything gold.
Halfway there, Lynx stopped.
"I have to sneak out of the Academy tonight," he said, casual, like he was talking about skipping dinner.
Kira’s instincts flared immediately. "Why?"
"Nothing to worry yourself about dear Kira," Lynx said, hands in his pockets. "I’m not like you regular Blessed students by the way. I don’t need all these school stuffs. It won’t benefit me in any way... well technically it will in some ways but not the teaching aspect. I already know about my affinity more than every teachers here."
And to him that was just the truth. If he upgrade his blessed class to SSS rank he wonder how devestating his affinities, strength, blessings would be.
Lira’s meek voice came as a whisper but they could here her clearly. "T-then why are you here?"
Lynx looked at her. She was still pink from the nose kiss. Still looking at him like he hung the stars.
He answered, but his eyes didn’t leave hers. "I’m still here because I plan to take this school to the number 1 ranking for the first time in 10 years. I plan to make this Empire number 1. And the best way to do that is making the school number 1."
Kira nodded slowly. Emily did too. Lira just stared, absorbing every word like scripture. Her adoration for him increased.
They ran into more junior fans on the way. More pictures. More screaming. Lynx smiled through it, but his mind was already elsewhere.
At the entrance of the girls building, they stopped.
Emily was the first to break the silence. "What made you so strong?"
Kira jumped in right after. "Yeah. Teacher Rose told me you couldn’t even use your fire affinity when you first came here."
Lira added, quieter. "Also... when you registered to this academy, your affinities were only 4. And they were A-ranks."
Three pairs of eyes. Burning with curiosity. No judgment. Just pure, desperate need to understand.
Lynx sighed. "If I told you guys, you wouldn’t believe me. Trust me. It’s very abnormal and unbelievable."
Kira scoffed. "Don’t worry. There’s nothing about you that could surprise us at this point in time."
Lynx smiled. Then he said it.
"I went to the Forbidden Zone."
