Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Shen Yunjiao Goes Missing
That night, Zhao Zuo abandoned his original plan. He didn’t go to the Earth Fire Chamber to refine Magical Artifacts.
Beneath the moonlight, Zhao Zuo was in the courtyard practicing the power-generation techniques of One Slash with his Hidden Blade Giant Sword. He was also waiting for Shen Yunjiao to arrive.
Their disagreement from the afternoon had affected their relationship.
In truth, the conflict stemmed from their different personalities. Shen Yunjiao was accustomed to taking risks, constantly sharpening her skills on the edge of life and death. Zhao Zuo, on the other hand, was cautious in his pursuit of progress. Although ambitious, he would never knowingly walk into danger.
The most immediate change was... Shen Yunjiao hadn’t eaten dinner, acting like a little girl sulking.
Before long, the sound of light footsteps came from the stairs. Shen Yunjiao had changed into a set of black clothes fit for moving at night. She had even intentionally bound her ample chest with strips of cloth, giving her a plain and unremarkable appearance.
Clearly, while she had decided to go out hunting Demon Beasts again tonight, she was still being cautious.
"If you run into danger, contact me with the Communication Jade."
Zhao Zuo stopped swinging his sword and spoke after steadying his ragged breaths.
"Alright, I know."
Shen Yunjiao didn’t pause. She used her Token to open the Array and quickly left the courtyard. Her lonely figure looked somewhat desolate as she departed. For a moment, she had actually considered taking Zhao Zuo’s advice.
But... she carried too many burdens. She was destined to be unable to grow closer to Zhao Zuo, and fated to bury certain feelings deep within her heart.
This was the real reason Shen Yunjiao’s attitude had suddenly turned cold, but Zhao Zuo didn’t understand what was on her mind.
In fact, now that he had mastered the Artifact Refining Technique, the profits from hunting Demon Beasts were no longer that important to Zhao Zuo. After all, as long as he was diligent, his monthly income from Artifact Refining was around one thousand five hundred Spirit Stones, which was more than enough to cover his Cultivation needs.
Their partnership in hunting was bound to end; the only difference was that Shen Yunjiao was the one to suggest they go their separate ways.
’This should count as an amicable parting.’
For a moment, he had also considered following Shen Yunjiao on her hunt tonight, but he ultimately decided against it. For one, he wasn’t her bodyguard. Besides, as her friend, he had already done his part by trying his best to persuade her.
Zhao Zuo resumed swinging the Hidden Blade Giant Sword. Before long, a whistling sound filled the courtyard as the Giant Sword tore through the air at incredible speed, creating gusts of wind that sent pebbles and dust flying.
His recent practice of the One Slash’s power-generation techniques had greatly improved Zhao Zuo’s control over his own body. Now, when he swung the sword, power flowed through every muscle in his body, each one interlocking with the others like a precision instrument.
This was the second level of the One Slash’s power-generation technique: Full Moon.
At this level, he could unleash his full strength in battle—for Zhao Zuo, that meant a force of ten thousand jin.
He had reached this level in less than a month of Cultivation. This was partly due to the superior comprehension that stemmed from his powerful Soul.
Of course, the main reason was that the nine movements of the Golden Body Technique already served to increase his physical control. However, that was a passive, gradual process. One Slash, on the other hand, turned this passive process into an active one, accelerating his mastery over his muscles.
Naturally, this active control only took effect during combat.
At midnight, Zhao Zuo sheathed his sword and stood still. By now, the Hidden Blade had accumulated enough experience points.
Without hesitation, he upgraded it.
This was the third time he had upgraded the Hidden Blade Giant Sword. The improvements from the three upgrades were as follows.
[Upgrade Description: Slightly increased hardness and Sharpness.]
[Upgrade Description: Slightly increased hardness and Sharpness.]
[Upgrade Description: Moderately increased hardness and Sharpness.]
Over the past ten days, Zhao Zuo had focused on upgrading the Hidden Blade Giant Sword, gaining a total of one thousand four hundred experience points to upgrade it three times. For now, however, that was as far as he could go.
From now on... his plans would have to change. He needed to evenly distribute his time grinding experience between the Sky-Breaking Saber and the Golden Light Mirror.
Zhao Zuo didn’t perform any Artifact Refining today. He was too worried about... Shen Yunjiao’s safety, and the distracting thoughts would inevitably lower his success rate.
Just as the sky began to brighten at dawn, Zhao Zuo heard familiar, light footsteps in the courtyard, heading toward the stairs.
Shen Yunjiao had returned safely.
「The next day」
Zhao Zuo began refining Magical Artifacts according to his plan, still completing three of them each day.
From purifying the raw materials to melting them at high temperatures, inscribing the Spirit Patterns, adjusting the details, and finally polishing and cold-quenching, all the steps combined took a full two-hour period.
However, as his proficiency increased, this time would continue to shrink. He had become particularly adept at forging and adjusting the fine details, as well as polishing and sharpening the blade.
For the next half a month, Zhao Zuo focused on his Cultivation in seclusion, not once stepping foot outside his small courtyard.
Zhao Zuo’s days fell into a cycle of three things: absorbing Heaven and Earth Spiritual Power, grinding experience, and Artifact Refining. His arduous daily Cultivation naturally brought significant progress. His Golden Light Mirror had already met the one-thousand-experience-point prerequisite for advancement; all that was left was to purchase the necessary materials.
He had also accumulated one hundred and twenty Creation Points during this time.
Every time Zhao Zuo saw his Creation Points tick up, he felt a strong sense of accomplishment. If he weren’t afraid of delaying his Cultivation, he would have dedicated even more time to Artifact Refining.
Even so, with his recent practice, refining three Magical Artifacts a day no longer took three full two-hour periods; the time had been reduced by about half an hour.
Whenever he had a free moment, Zhao Zuo couldn’t resist taking out his Sky-Breaking Saber to grind experience. At his current pace, he would need about another month and a half before he could upgrade it again.
Furthermore, the Hidden Blade Giant Sword’s experience had already maxed out. He just needed to gather the required materials to complete its first advancement. However... the cost was rather steep, requiring a hundred jin of Blazing Fire Rock.
This type of stone contained fiery power within it and was often used as a supplementary material for refining Magical Treasures. Although it only cost ten Spirit Stones per jin, completing the advancement would still cost Zhao Zuo more than half a month of his savings.
Since there were no pressing battles that required this weapon, Zhao Zuo wasn’t in a hurry to advance it. For now, he planned to first advance his Clear Heart Jade Pendant to further accelerate his Cultivation speed.
During this period, Shen Yunjiao often went out alone at night and had succeeded in her hunts a few times. As for how many Spirit Stones she earned from selling the Demon Beast meat... Zhao Zuo had no idea. Shen Yunjiao never brought it up, and he didn’t want to make things awkward by asking. It was as if a barrier had formed between them... they were no longer as close as they once were.
Their relationship had grown close quickly after they had faced several life-and-death crises side-by-side. But now, having not fought together for a long time, they were gradually... drifting apart. In essence, they lacked a means to maintain their bond, and they also lacked the necessary communication.
During this time, Shen Yunjiao had returned injured on several occasions, but she had always returned safely.
Zhao Zuo had thought life would continue on this peacefully, but on a morning in early February, Shen Yunjiao did not return.
