By the time I finished handing over everything with the boss at the company, it was already two in the morning.
The boss went home, but even though I was exhausted, the success of the mission left me wide awake and buzzing with excitement.
I started to get up to head back, but then decided to wait until dawn. I wanted Yumi to get a good night’s sleep.
The early morning is when plans begin, so I’d go home after sunrise.
From now on, the two of us would start a brand-new chapter. I felt full of confidence about our future life together
I lay face-down on the office desk, but sleep wouldn’t come. With nothing else to do, I decided to find something to occupy myself.
Suddenly, I remembered the home security cameras. While I trusted Yumi completely, I couldn’t help but worry about Jihoon.
Had that kid taken advantage of Yumi after I left?
With nothing else to do, I pulled up all the home surveillance footage, intending to watch it like a movie.
I started the footage from the first day I left home, brewing myself a cup of coffee to sip as I watched.
The first few days showed everything normal at home, nothing out of the ordinary.
Each night before bed, Yumi would call me.
Only after hearing my phone switch off would she reluctantly hang up, her face etched with worry.
It was the first time I’d seen her so concerned for me while I was away on business, and it warmed my heart.
Meanwhile, Jihoon sought opportunities every night to get closer to Yumi, asking her to tutor him, to read him stories.
But each night at bedtime, Yumi would retreat to her own room.
Jihoon had held back for days, but one night, he seemed unable to endure it any longer.
“Mom, why won’t you sleep with me? Didn’t you say before that as long as he’s not home, you’d sleep with me?”
One night, after helping Jihoon settle down, Yumi was about to return to her own room when Jihoon finally asked cautiously.
“Jihoon, remember, from now on, don’t refer to your father as ‘he.’ If you insist on calling him ‘Dad,’ you should at least call him ‘Uncle,’ understand?”
Hearing Jihoon’s words, a flicker of irritation crossed Yumi’s face. It seemed to her that his use of “he” showed disrespect toward her husband.
“Oh, I’m sorry…” Seeing Yumi’s slight anger, a genuine look of sadness flashed across Jihoon’s face.
It wasn’t feigned…it was his true reaction. He cared deeply about how Yumi saw him.
“Jihoon, remember…he is your father. When he returns, you must accept him and address him properly.
Do you understand how hard he works for this family? And the risks he takes? You’ll understand when you’re older.
You don’t know the cost of rice and firewood until you run a household; you don’t know your parents’ kindness until you raise a child.”
Seeing Jihoon’s sad expression, a hint of tenderness flashed across Yumi’s face.
She stepped forward and hugged Jihoon’s head, but he seemed a bit annoyed.
He didn’t press his face fully into her embrace, instead keeping his forehead pressed against her body, preventing her from getting too close to his face.
“Besides, it’s not that Mom doesn’t want to sleep with you. It’s because you’ve grown up. You should sleep on your own now. You’re a big boy. You need to learn independence, and…” Yumi seemed to realize the next words were too sensitive and stopped herself.
She noticed he was still angry, so her tone became much gentler.
“Tonight Mom will sleep with you one more time, but this is the last time. From now on, you must learn to be independent and not cling to me so much, okay? I want you to grow up to be a man who stands tall and strong, just like your father.”
Seeing Jihoon still silent, Yumi knew he was still upset. But that was normal for a child.
“No need, Mom. Starting tonight, I’ll sleep alone…”
Whatever had gotten into this kid tonight? Yumi had practically apologized to him, yet he still wouldn’t let it go.
“Sigh…” Though Jihoon’s words sounded perfectly normal, Yumi knew the emotional weight behind them.
She couldn’t help but let out a sigh, then slowly released her arms from around him and turned to leave his room.
After watching her leave, Jihoon slammed both fists hard onto the mattress. He flopped onto the bed, pulled the covers over his head, and buried himself beneath them.
He seemed to sense Yumi’s growing distance.
Her keeping her distance from Jihoon because of my words had unexpectedly caused him deep sorrow.
The scene shifted to my bedroom with Yumi.
After returning, she changed into conservative pajamas but didn’t go back to bed.
Instead, she stood on the floor deep in thought for a long while before shaking her head and letting out a bitter smile.
Yumi turned off the bedroom light but didn’t return to bed.
Instead, she walked out of the room and slowly made her way toward Jihoon’s bedroom.
Click…
The door to Jihoon’s room opened.
Yumi switched on the light and saw Jihoon burying his head under the covers.
When the person beneath the quilt heard the door open, I clearly saw him tremble.
Yumi slipped off her slippers, then turned and lay down on the bed, a hint of resignation on her face.
She turned to hug Jihoon, then struggled to pull the covers off his head.
By then, Jihoon was drenched in sweat.
Perhaps it had grown too hot under the covers, but when Yumi turned his face, she could clearly see Jihoon was crying.
Yes, truly crying—a 13 or 14-year-old boy weeping.
