By the time their people arrived, the laboratory was nearly picked clean. Aside from the equipment that couldn’t be moved, everything, including the research data, had been taken away.

After settling the Beastmen, he had taken all the data and headed back to the laboratory first, checking on the condition of the Mutated Bat Wings while he was there.

Chi Heng did not go with him, instead heading to another location with Chi Ye.

At the border between South City and Yao City, a place perennially shrouded in mist, it resembled a delicate ink wash painting, inspiring endless reverie.

A courtyard rested quietly within the mist, its gate half-open. The marks of age were faintly discernible on the mottled wood.

Chi Heng followed Chi Ye in. As they pushed the gate open, they were met with the sight of several familiar faces.

They were all members of the Wolf Clan from the Beast World.

Seeing Chi Heng, they all felt their eyes burn with emotion. He was the Wolf King’s youngest son, heir to the king’s superior genes. On Blue Star, a world filled with prejudice against Beastmen, he was the one to whom they had voluntarily sworn their allegiance.

These were the loyal members of the Wolf Clan whom Chi Ye had just recently rescued.

Weeds relentlessly encroached on every inch of soil. Unfamiliar wildflowers stubbornly peeked out from the corners of the walls, nestled beside emerald bamboo swaying in the breeze...

Chi Heng lowered his gaze, searching for comforting words for a long moment, but in the end, all he said was, "Everyone will be going home soon."

He said "everyone," not "we."

Here on Blue Star, there was someone he wanted to watch over.

Chi Ye, ever sharp, caught this distinction. After the pleasantries were exchanged, he pulled Chi Heng aside.

A dried-up well sat silently in the center of the courtyard, its stone curb broken. Chi Ye sat on the edge, looking at him with a devil-may-care attitude.

A blade of grass, just plucked from a crack in the stones, dangled from his lips, giving him a wild, unrestrained look.

"What’s this about? You don’t want to go back?"

The sky was clear. Birds occasionally flitted past, their crisp calls a stark contrast to the surrounding silence.

Chi Heng kept his head down, silent, his gaze fixed on the dappled shadows of the trees. A hint of tenderness softened his features as his thoughts drifted elsewhere.

"For a human?" Chi Ye arched a brow.

He knew his dear nephew all too well. The boy was all action and few words. He was taciturn in the Beast World, and even more so here on Blue Star.

"It’s not that I’m definitely not going back..." Chi Heng said quietly.

Chi Ye understood immediately. His "not definitely" meant... it all depended on Wen Qian.

If she didn’t leave, he wouldn’t leave.

If she left, then he could leave too.

’Isn’t this a classic case of being completely lovesick?’

’What was it I said to him before? Do I need to jog his memory?’

"Let me tell you, neither the Young Master of the Tiger Clan nor that guy from the Gu Family are people you can mess with! If you go back to the Wolf Clan, you’ll still have your father to back you up. But if you stay here, the only thing you’ll be contributing is a wedding gift!" Chi Ye said, intentionally making his words harsh.

"I don’t care about any of that," Chi Heng replied, his head still bowed.

Chi Ye was so exasperated he almost choked, nearly passing out from sheer frustration.

’What does he mean by that? Is he willing to be her second-rate lover?’

’If his father found out, wouldn’t it kill him?’

"Now listen to me, my dear nephew, we need to think this through carefully..."

"I’ve already thought it through."

"No, not carefully enough..."

"..."

The two went back and forth, reaching a stalemate. Chi Ye wished he had a few extra mouths to argue with.

Chi Heng said, "I’m heading back, Uncle. Don’t come looking for me unless it’s important."

"???"

Chi Ye rolled his eyes so far back they nearly got stuck. Just as he was about to say something else, the gate let out a loud CREAK.

Both of them looked up at the same time, just in time to see another group of Wolf Clan Beastmen being led inside.

Among them was a man Chi Heng recognized—the one from the Water Prison.

Unable to speak, the man simply gave Chi Heng a deep bow. The one beside him, however, stepped forward and thanked Chi Heng gratefully, "It’s all thanks to you, Young Master. If it weren’t for you, my father and I would have died in there..."

"I only did what was necessary." As usual, his words were few.

Chi Ye was about to jump into the conversation, but the Wolf Clan Beastman spoke again. "I just don’t know where those Fuyi went. If I ever see them again... I’ll kill them with my own two hands!"

"You have a grudge against them?" Chi Ye asked, his curiosity piqued.

"No." The Werewolf across from him shook his head. "Every Beastman who was locked in there has a grudge against them."

Chi Heng had been about to leave, but hearing this, he froze.

He turned back, giving the Wolf Beastman a questioning look.

The man froze for a second before explaining, "Most of the Beastmen there were lured in by the Fuyi... They’ve struck some kind of deal with the humans. We heard the experiments were their idea, too."

A chill shot up his spine and spread through his entire body. Chi Heng suddenly remembered the two Mutated Bat Wings that Gu Mian had locked in the laboratory, and his face instantly went pale.

Three hours had passed since they left the laboratory. Gu Mian must have already returned to University A by now. ’But could this really be true?’

’Those experiments were all targeted at Beastmen... If they were to succeed, what would the Fuyi possibly gain from it?’

"Gu Mian’s lab... has Fuyi in it."

"..."

He pulled his phone from his pocket and tried calling three times, but there was no answer. Chi Heng looked at Chi Ye, his expression grave and his voice cold. "Give me the car keys."

Without a moment’s hesitation, Chi Ye tossed him the keys. Then, just as Chi Heng was about to step out of the courtyard, he grabbed his arm. "We’ll go together."

"We’ll go too!"

Looking at the three of them in silence, Chi Heng nodded.

The car sped down the highway. It was a several-hour drive to University A from here. Chi Heng had originally planned to find Wen Qian after this trip was over... but now, it seemed, his plans would have to change.

Along the way, the Beastman told Chi Heng about the laboratories. Only then did Chi Heng realize that the lab they had visited today was merely a decoy—or perhaps not a decoy, but simply one of many.

"How much do you know about those Fuyi?" Chi Ye asked, turning back from the passenger seat.

The Wolf Beast whose tongue had been cut out couldn’t speak. He anxiously tugged the sleeve of the other Wolf Beast beside him, who nodded and immediately began to explain. "Back then, the lab was plastered with portraits of the Fuyi. We didn’t understand it at first, but later we realized they were being honored..."

"The Fuyi hold a high position in the laboratory. They can throw any Beastman into the Water Prison whenever they want, and they can conduct experiments on them."

"The reason they’re mutated isn’t because humans forced some injection on them. It’s because they *wanted* to mutate... to become stronger."

"You’re saying they were eager to be the humans’ lab rats?" Chi Ye frowned.

"No..." The man lowered his head. "The Fuyi created the reagents. The humans are just their tools."

For a moment, an eerie silence filled the car.

Chi Heng slammed his foot on the accelerator. In a way, Gu Mian was an ally.

Besides, Gu Mian’s relationship with Wen Qian was unusual. If something really happened to him, then Wen Qian might...
