My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 103: Having You Along is EnoughChapter 103: Chapter 103: Having You Along is Enough
The door was pushed open gently, and Gwen Grayson walked in.
"Sis..."
Vesper Grayson looked up, raising an eyebrow as she cast a cool glance at her.
The bruises on her face had long since faded completely, not a single trace left behind.
"What is it?"
Gwen walked closer, holding out a box of cookies to her.
"I baked these myself. I brought them for you to try."
Inside were the butter cookies Vesper had always liked.
’Bringing a gift for no reason means you’re up to no good.’
"So kind of you?" she asked, a half-smile playing on her lips as she looked at Gwen. "You didn’t poison them, did you?"
"Of course not! How can you think so badly of me? If you’re not going to eat them, fine! I’d rather feed them to a dog than give them to you!"
Gwen pretended she was going to take the cookies back, but Vesper raised a hand and held the box down.
"Still got that sharp tongue! Looks like you’ve recovered well. But there’s no sense in taking back a gift you’ve already given."
Gwen pulled her hand back, a flicker of awkwardness crossing her face as she mumbled.
"Last time... you saved me. Just consider this a thank-you gift."
"Mm, I’ll be sure to try them. If there’s nothing else, you should get back to work."
Gwen shot her a glance. When their eyes met, she awkwardly looked away and tossed out another sentence.
"If you’re not used to living out here, you can always come back home. Jonathan... he’s always talking about you. It’s so annoying."
"Thanks for your concern, but I’m doing just fine living out here."
"Who’s concerned about you? You’re flattering yourself."
With that, she turned and quickly walked out.
Vesper raised an eyebrow slightly, her gaze falling back to the box of rather presentable cookies. She picked one up and popped it into her mouth.
It was crumbly and dense, with a rich, milky fragrance. It melted in her mouth, sweet but not cloying.
...
That evening, after showering, Vesper Grayson began packing her clothes for the trip to Portclyde.
There wasn’t much of a seasonal temperature difference between the two cities.
She packed two or three changes of clothes for herself, then started packing Jared Hawthorne’s suitcase.
The man sat on the sofa, replying to messages, his soft gaze occasionally landing on her slender, busy figure.
’He used to pack for his business trips all by himself. Having someone do it for him now... this feeling wasn’t bad at all.’
"Elias, are you particular about your toiletries?"
Some people couldn’t get used to the shampoo and body wash provided elsewhere, so they had to pack their own personal toiletries.
"I have a specific set of toiletries that I use. I always take them on business trips. They’re in the cabinet under the sink."
’Just as I thought,’ she mused. ’Jared Hawthorne is used to a life of luxury, accustomed to being pampered. He only uses his own things.’
When she was almost done packing, she double-checked everything.
"I’m done. Come take a look and see if I missed anything."
Jared Hawthorne walked over slowly and gently wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her entire body into his embrace.
His warm chest pressed against her back, and his steady heartbeat was clearly audible through their clothes. He rested his chin lightly on the crown of her head, his breath whispering by her ear, low and tender.
"Nothing’s missing."
"Having you with me is more than enough."
Vesper Grayson’s body tensed slightly. The tips of her ears grew hot without her realizing, and her breathing became a little lighter.
"You’re going for work. If I tag along, will I be a bother?"
Jared Hawthorne let out a low chuckle. He tightened his arms slightly, holding her more securely in his embrace as his warm breath caressed the tip of her ear. His voice was husky and alluring.
"How could you be a bother? I wish I could keep you by my side all the time."
"I’m not working twenty-four hours a day. After my business is done, all my remaining time will be for you."
"Think of it as... using a business trip as a legitimate excuse to go on a date with you in Portclyde."
Vesper leaned against his chest, her nose tingling. Her heart felt a bittersweet pang, a jumble of emotions welling up inside her.
When Luke Lockwood used to go on business trips, she would also be the one to pack his bags, but he never took her with him. He always took Ivy Joyce instead.
On the rare occasion she asked to go along, Luke would make up an excuse to brush her off.
"This trip is all business, and the events are quite formal. It wouldn’t be convenient to bring you."
"I’m worried you’d be bored all alone in the hotel, and I don’t want you to have to travel all over with me."
"Besides, it’s just a bunch of guys talking business. If I always bring you along, people will laugh at me for spoiling my girlfriend and not being career-focused."
"Just be a good girl and wait for me at home, okay?"
He always said it so gently and considerately, as if he was only thinking of her well-being.
But only after seeing his true colors did she finally understand. He wasn’t considering her at all; he was just using his business trips as an excuse to openly fool around with Ivy Joyce.
Because they had to travel the next day, and they had been up late the night before, the two of them embraced and fell asleep early that night.
The next day, after breakfast, they left for the airport.
While waiting to board, she called Milton Grayson to ask for three days off.
When he learned they were going to Portclyde for fun, Milton was naturally happy for them and reminded her to be safe.
Just as she hung up, a commotion erupted from the other side of the departure lounge.
Two figures were surrounded by a crowd of people taking pictures and murmuring, creating quite a stir.
A man and a woman were walking in front, looking like a brother and sister.
The woman wore exquisite makeup and had a gentle demeanor, clearly enjoying the attention she was receiving. It was none other than Mandy Grayson, who had recently gained some fame online under the title of "Miracle Doctor."
The man beside her was deliberately protecting her, his posture composed as he handled the onlookers’ stares.
Escorted by the crowd, they walked straight into the first-class lounge.
That’s when something unexpected happened.
A middle-aged man clutched his chest and collapsed to the floor. His face was turning purple, his breathing was rapid, and his chest heaved violently. It was clearly an acute asthma attack, and he couldn’t catch his breath.
A wave of panicked gasps swept through the departure lounge.
"Miracle Doctor Grayson! Please, save him!"
Mandy Grayson forced herself to remain calm as she stood up, her voice soft and gentle.
"Everyone, don’t worry. Of course, I won’t just stand by and watch someone die."
She stepped forward, squatted down to examine him, and began patting the middle-aged man’s back and pressing on his chest.
Watching her incorrect procedure, Vesper finally couldn’t stop herself from speaking up.
"During an acute asthma attack, you can’t pat their back or apply pressure to their chest. It will make him suffocate faster. The way you’re ’saving’ him is actually harming him."
The moment she finished speaking, the area fell silent.
Mandy Grayson’s hand froze. She looked up at Vesper, her gaze cold and arrogant, her tone displeased.
"I’ve been studying medicine since I was a child. You think I’d make a mistake in judgment on something like this? I know how to treat him better than you do, so you don’t need to butt in."
The people around them also chimed in to support Mandy.
"Exactly! Miracle Doctor Grayson has seen it all!"
"Don’t just run your mouth, young lady! What if you delay his treatment?"
"I heard that Miss Kensington, who suffered from a chronic illness for years, was cured by Miracle Doctor Grayson."
"Miracle Doctor Grayson is so young, yet her healing hands bring the dying back to life! She’s a modern-day Asclepius!"
A slight smile touched Mandy Grayson’s lips, unable to hide the smugness in her eyes.
She quickly scanned the patient’s belongings and soon found an emergency asthma inhaler.
She twisted off the cap, placed the inhaler at the patient’s mouth and nose, and gestured for him to press it and inhale.
After just a moment, the man’s rapid wheezing gradually subsided. The violent heaving of his chest calmed down, his complexion improved bit by bit, and he slowly regained consciousness.
The crowd immediately erupted in enthusiastic praise.
"He’s awake! She really saved him!"
"Miracle Doctor Grayson is amazing! So quick and professional!"
"She’s beautiful, kind-hearted, and her medical skills are top-notch!"
Mandy Grayson slowly straightened up, shot Vesper a provocative glance, and snorted softly.
Watching the mindless praise the crowd was heaping on the woman, Vesper had never been so speechless in her life.
’The man recovered entirely because of the emergency asthma inhaler. It had absolutely nothing to do with her medical skills.’
