Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Vesper, I miss you...

’Who are these two now?’

’The Hawthorne family relationships are truly a tangled mess.’

’She hadn’t looked into the Hawthorne family’s internal affairs before. It seemed she’d been careless.’

’Master Hawthorne is really something. He had three sons?’

’First one distant relative pops up, then another. Does he have a fourth and fifth son hidden away somewhere?’

"Second Aunt, are you not feeling well?"

She handed over the form in her hand, pretending she hadn’t seen a thing.

Nancy Linton snapped back to her senses. Seeing it was Vesper Grayson, she forced a smile, but her face was deathly pale.

"I’m fine."

She took the form and walked past Vesper Grayson in a daze. It was as if her soul had been ripped from her body, her steps unsteady.

"What took you so long? I was starting to think something had happened to you."

Before she had taken more than a few steps, Sharon Chandler came looking for her.

Vesper Grayson shook her head slightly. "Mrs. Chandler, are there any more tests?"

"No, that’s all of them. The results will be out tomorrow. Remember to remind Jared to come to the hospital for a check-up too."

"Okay, I’ll remember."

The car had just come to a stop in the corporation’s underground parking garage when Luke Lockwood’s figure appeared, standing right in front of it.

Their eyes met. Vesper Grayson frowned slightly and pushed the door open to get out.

"How did you get in here?"

’Looks like the parking garage security needs a major overhaul.’

"Vesper, I miss you..." Luke Lockwood took a step forward, his dark eyes churning with intense emotion. "Did you see the messages I sent a few days ago?"

Vesper Grayson’s expression was indifferent. "Luke Lockwood, don’t you hate clingy people the most? How is it that you’ve become the very thing you despise?"

"Are you still angry with me?" Luke Lockwood’s throat tightened, his voice hoarse and strained. "No matter what, I can’t let you go."

"I have a boyfriend. I’ve started a new life, and I don’t want you to disturb it. You don’t actually think your persistence is going to change anything, do you?"

"Three years together, all the little moments we shared day in and day out... I don’t believe you can just let it go like that and fall in love with another man so quickly!"

"What? Just because we had a past, I’m supposed to be hung up on you forever?" A flicker of mockery crossed Vesper Grayson’s eyes. "It was only after we broke up that I realized how shallow I used to be. I thought meeting someone meant a lifetime together, just the two of us. I thought pouring my heart out would earn me genuine affection in return. In the end, it was nothing but a ridiculously naive obsession."

"I’ve woken up now, so you can stop this pointless pestering. I really have fallen for him."

Luke Lockwood’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. A hot, hard lump seemed to be stuck in his throat, making it ache.

He lunged forward and grabbed her by the shoulders, his dark eyes swirling with incredulous pain and panic.

"Impossible! How long have you even known each other? How could you fall in love with him so fast?"

"What’s so impossible? You promised you would never betray me, but that promise only lasted a single year, didn’t it?"

"That’s different! Ivy Joyce and I were just taking care of physical needs. I was never in love with her!"

Vesper Grayson struggled fiercely. When he refused to let go, she raised her hand and slapped him.

SLAP—

The crisp sound of the slap echoed through the empty underground garage, and the surroundings instantly fell into a dead silence.

"Snapped out of it?" Vesper Grayson’s gaze was as cold as starlight. "It’s one thing to use those words to deceive yourself, but saying them out loud only makes me despise you more."

’A man with no sense of responsibility, only making excuses for his own mistakes.’

’Does he really think that’ll numb his conscience and earn him forgiveness?’

Luke Lockwood’s eyes were red and bloodshot. "I know you despise me, hate me, and don’t want to see me right now, but I will never let you go, and I will never give up."

Before Vesper Grayson could call for security, Luke Lockwood turned and ran, disappearing around a corner of the garage.

Divinium!

Back in the office, Dolly Hughes handed her a warm cup of coffee.

"Sister Vesper, who upset you? You don’t look so good."

"Luke Lockwood is in Northolme."

Dolly Hughes frowned immediately. "He just won’t go away! Sister Vesper, you can’t, under any circumstances, forgive that scumbag."

"I won’t." Vesper Grayson took a sip of her coffee and gave a stern order, "Go and inform the HR department to replace all the security guards in the underground parking garage. If any unauthorized personnel are allowed in again, have them submit their resignations directly."

"I’ll get on it right now."

"Okay."

The word was barely out of her mouth when Jared Hawthorne called to ask about her check-up.

"Sorry, I had an important overseas video conference this morning and couldn’t be at the hospital with you."

"It’s fine, work is more important. Today was just for the tests; the results won’t be out until tomorrow. Your mother asked me to urge you to get a check-up at the hospital soon, too." Vesper Grayson touched her forehead and gave a helpless little laugh. "Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed to the check-up. I can’t shake the feeling that I’m being watched."

Jared Hawthorne chuckled softly. "Don’t feel pressured. Just think of it as a routine physical."

"By the way, I ran into your second aunt at the hospital this morning. How come you’ve never mentioned her?"

"When my second uncle was young, he was shiftless and unreliable. Master Hawthorne was furious that he wouldn’t live up to his potential and kicked him out to live elsewhere long ago."

"Who are Kevin Hawthorne and Aidan Hawthorne?"

"My second uncle, and his adopted son." Jared Hawthorne raised an eyebrow slightly. "They should be at the engagement banquet. I’ll introduce you formally then."

"Just an adopted son?"

"Yes, Second Uncle adopted Aidan from an orphanage back in the day."

Vesper Grayson recalled the DNA report she had accidentally seen at the hospital, and her heart sank a little.

"There’s something I think you should know."

"What is it?"

"Aidan Hawthorne is actually your second uncle’s biological son."

She told him everything she had accidentally discovered at the hospital.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before Jared Hawthorne’s voice grew a few shades deeper.

"Are you sure you didn’t misread it?"

"Yes."

"Besides me, have you told anyone else?"

"No..."

’How could she dare to spread such a huge family secret and stir up unnecessary trouble?’

After hanging up, Jared Hawthorne immediately dialed Maxim Chandler’s number.

"Help me investigate something," he ordered in a low voice, adding a few more instructions. "The more detailed, the better. And remember, don’t alert the target."

...

"Miss Garland, what exactly did you want to see me about?"

Mandy Grayson looked at the impeccably dressed, delicate-looking young woman across from her, her face full of suspicion.

Ever since being doxxed online, fired from the hospital, and rejected by the Traditional Chinese Medicine Association, she had become a shut-in, as jumpy as a frightened bird.

Fortunately, the media frenzy had started to die down recently, and reporters were no longer camped outside the Grayson Family’s gate.

She had received an anonymous note that morning requesting a meeting. When she arrived, she was surprised to find that the other party was a young woman who looked to be around twenty.

Sheryl Garland smiled with pure innocence, taking small bites of the dessert in front of her. She spoke slowly, "Miss Grayson, to have fallen into such a state... do you really not know who was fanning the flames behind the scenes?"

Mandy Grayson’s expression darkened. "It was my own lack of skill. I shouldn’t have taken credit for someone else’s achievement. I can’t blame anyone else."

"You were indeed at fault, but when you failed to clarify things at the start, she just stood by and watched. It’s obvious she was waiting for public opinion to explode so she could watch your reputation be destroyed."

"Who are you talking about?"

"I know who really cured Miss Kensington."

All of Northolme had been secretly searching for that mysterious miracle doctor, but there had been no news, as if they had never existed in the first place.

"Who?" Mandy Grayson looked up abruptly.

"Vesper Grayson. You should have had dealings with her before."

"That’s absolutely impossible!" Mandy Grayson rejected the idea without a second thought. "The Nine Dragon Needle technique was used to cure Miss Kensington. Vesper Grayson is so young, how could she possibly possess such profound medical skill?"

Sheryl Garland rested her chin on her hand, her smile deepening. "But I saw it with my own eyes. By the way, I heard that the old master of the Forrester Family from Portclyde arrived quietly in Northolme the day before yesterday. Why do you think he would drag his ailing body all this way?"
