Chapter 130: Chapter 130: How Could It Be You?
"Jared, I just saw Miss Grayson; she wasn’t feeling well. A waiter helped her back to her room, so you should hurry and go check on her."
Sheryl Garland approached Jared Hawthorne and said with a look of deep concern.
Thinking of the text message he had just received, Jared Hawthorne set his wine glass aside and turned to head upstairs.
She rushed to follow, but Casey Nash caught her by the arm.
"Sheryl, what’s going on?"
"Mom, Miss Grayson seems to be drunk. I’m going up to check on her."
With that, she pulled her arm free and hurried after Jared Hawthorne.
’Since when has Sheryl been so concerned about Miss Grayson?’
At the thought, she grabbed Noah Nash, who was chatting and laughing pleasantly. "Stop drinking. Come upstairs with me to see what’s happening!"
"Aunt, what’s wrong?"
Noah Nash asked, looking utterly confused.
She didn’t know what to say, so she just lowered her voice. "Don’t ask questions. Just follow me."
"Which room is it?"
Sheryl Garland eagerly pointed to the last guest room.
As he reached the door and pushed it open, the sounds of a man and a woman’s intimate, intertwined panting drifted out from the opening.
Jared Hawthorne’s hand froze. He shot a sideways glance, his cold, sharp dark eyes fixed on Sheryl Garland. "Are you sure this is the room?"
"Yes, I saw her go in with my own two eyes." Sheryl Garland covered her mouth, her face a picture of shock. "How could Sister Vesper do this behind Jared’s back, with another man... especially on a day as important as their engagement."
Casey Nash, who had just rushed over, heard every word. She quickly grabbed her daughter’s arm and chided in a low voice, "We don’t know the facts yet, how can you spout such nonsense? Maybe it’s not even Miss Grayson in there!"
"Mom, I’m not lying. I saw a waiter help her inside with my own two eyes." Sheryl Garland said, feigning hurt. Seeing a waiter approaching in the distance, her eyes suddenly lit up. "You! Over here!"
The waiter approached. "Miss, how may I help you?"
"Did you just help a drunk woman into this room?"
"Yes, that’s correct."
"See, Jared? I wasn’t wrong, was I?"
Sheryl Garland said, feigning indignation, "Miss Grayson clearly has no respect for you, Jared. To carry on with another man on such an important day... Where does that leave your honor?"
"Sheryl Garland, shut up!"
Seeing Jared Hawthorne’s expression grow even darker, Noah Nash hastily clamped a hand over her mouth.
"Mmph! Mmph!"
Sheryl Garland struggled, her muffled protests full of indignation.
Just then, Sharon Chandler arrived with Bernard Hawthorne. "I just heard Vesper isn’t feeling well? What exactly is going on?"
Sheryl Garland broke free and ran to Sharon Chandler’s side. "Chandler, Miss Grayson is in there with another man, behind Jared’s back, engaged in some sordid affair!"
"Miss Garland, think before you speak!" Sharon Chandler’s face turned cold. "Is this what passes for an upbringing in the Garland Family?"
Sheryl Garland shrank back slightly, biting her lip. "I’m sorry, Chandler. Please forgive me for speaking out of turn. I was just so angry and indignant on Jared’s behalf."
Just then, the sounds from the room grew louder, shifting from soft and intermittent to heavy and continuous. The faces of everyone outside turned grim.
"Elias, this..."
Sharon Chandler’s gaze fell on her son’s dark, forbidding expression. ’Her son had finally gotten his heart’s desire, and now Vesper Grayson was committing such an outrageous act at their own engagement party. It was utterly scandalous. She couldn’t begin to imagine what a devastating blow this would be for him.’
Jared Hawthorne’s jaw tensed. He closed the door, his voice hard as steel. "That’s not Vesper."
"Then who is in there?" Sharon Chandler asked.
’Today is Jared’s engagement. They’ve booked the entire first and second floors of the hotel. He looks furious, yet he insists it’s not her. He’s clearly trying to cover something up. Even if Vesper Grayson did save his life, he shouldn’t be so lenient when a fundamental principle is at stake.’
"You all go downstairs first. I’ll handle things here."
But Sheryl Garland wasn’t about to let go of such a perfect opportunity to utterly ruin Vesper Grayson’s reputation.
Catching everyone off guard, she spun around and burst into the room.
"Sheryl!"
Casey Nash’s expression changed dramatically, but it was too late to stop her.
The others, who had been about to leave, couldn’t help but stop in their tracks.
Sheryl Garland took in the two entangled figures on the large bed. A triumphant smile had yet to form on her lips when the woman on the bed, in a moment of passion, turned her head. The instant Sheryl Garland saw that face, her own expression changed drastically. She rushed to the side of the bed and demanded in a harsh voice,
"How can it be you?"
"AHHH!!!"
A piercing scream erupted from inside the room.
Mandy Grayson came to her senses. She frantically shoved the man off her and yanked the blanket up to cover her body.
"I’m asking you a question! Where is Vesper Grayson?"
Sheryl Garland was seething.
’I clearly saw Vesper Grayson go into the room with the man I arranged. How did it end up being Mandy Grayson!’
The scream also snapped the man back to his senses. Once he got his bearings, he quickly asked, "Miss Grayson, what’s going on here?"
"Get away from me! Stay away!"
Mandy Grayson was on the verge of a complete breakdown. Her reputation... it was ruined, just like that.
’Someone had knocked her out from behind... Then her body had felt strange, out of her control. The moment the man lunged at her, she had lost all reason, her mind filled with nothing but nauseating images.’
"No, this can’t be happening... How could it be me...?"
She broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably.
"If not you, then who was it supposed to be?"
Jared Hawthorne’s icy voice came, and it was as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over the people in the room, chilling them to the bone.
Mandy Grayson’s pupils shrank. She pulled her neck in, trying to disappear under the covers.
"Miss Grayson, perhaps you should explain why you’re here at my engagement party?"
"I don’t know... I don’t know anything..."
She couldn’t form the words, only able to shake her head frantically.
"Oh, thank goodness it wasn’t Miss Grayson. I almost completely misunderstood her..." Sheryl Garland said, patting her chest in mock relief as she looked at Jared Hawthorne. "Jared, this is a disgraceful situation. We shouldn’t let it get any bigger. It looks like this young lady was probably set up, too."
A thin, cold smile touched Jared Hawthorne’s lips. "Sheryl, when did you and Miss Grayson get acquainted?"
A flicker of panic showed in Sheryl Garland’s eyes as she met his piercing gaze, and she hastily denied knowing her.
"I don’t know her."
"Then why, when you burst in, did you ask, *How can it be you?* It was as if you were certain that the person in this room was supposed to be Vesper Grayson."
"It’s because I thought I saw *her* go in... My concern just clouded my judgment, that’s all. Jared, you can’t possibly suspect me, can you?" Sheryl Garland’s heart trembled as she met his intimidating gaze. She quickly lowered her head and began to sob. "We’ve known each other for so many years... How could you think that of me?"
Noah Nash said grimly, "Elias, our priority right now is finding Vesper Grayson!"
Casey Nash nodded. "He’s right. Let’s find Vesper first and sort this out later."
Jared Hawthorne’s gaze was piercing as he turned to the waiter. "You said you helped someone into this room. Where is she?"
The waiter trembled. "I-I’m not sure... I’m certain I helped someone in here, but I don’t know how it ended up being this lady instead..."
"Maxim Chandler," Jared Hawthorne commanded, his voice as cold as ice, "Lock down the hotel. Have your men search every single room!"
