Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Angry?
"He’s very good to me!" Vesper Grayson cut him off before he could finish.
Luke Lockwood’s expression suddenly stiffened, his thin lips pressing into a hard, straight line. "You’ve really fallen in love with him?"
The Vesper of the past used to look at him with passionate love in her eyes, but now, only indifference and distance remained.
"You should know me. If I didn’t love him, I wouldn’t have agreed to the engagement. Back then, the whole reason I ran off to Ashmore and met you was to escape an arranged marriage. After all the twists and turns, I never thought I’d end up with him."
Luke Lockwood was stunned. "He’s the one your family arranged for you to marry?"
"Yes." Vesper Grayson looked directly into his dark eyes, her tone calm. "And I have you to thank for it. If it weren’t for you, I probably would have never understood what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like. He respects and accepts me. For the three years I was with you, he remained single, quietly waiting for me to come around. It’s hard not to fall in love with a man as principled and outstanding as him."
Luke Lockwood’s gaze darkened, and for a long moment, he was speechless.
"Take your jade pendant back."
Vesper Grayson placed the jade pendant back into his hand. Luke Lockwood’s fingertips trembled slightly as he took it, his voice rough and hoarse.
"I admit I’m an asshole. I’m the one who failed you, but I do love you. Men are bound to make mistakes. How can you be so sure he’ll stay faithful to you forever?"
"I trust him." Vesper Grayson’s gaze didn’t waver in the slightest. "I’m not going to stop believing in love just because of one bad relationship."
"Then why can’t you trust me one more time?" Luke Lockwood’s gaze grew deeper and more pained. "We’ve been through so much together. I don’t believe you can just forget it all like that!"
’They had once been so deeply in love, with an emotional foundation no one else could replace. There was no way someone could just come between them so easily.’
Vesper Grayson’s expression remained placid. "I haven’t forgotten. I just see that past as a trial, a lesson."
"Are you telling me you’re completely blameless for how things ended up?" Luke Lockwood took a step forward, grabbing her shoulders, his knuckles tightening unconsciously. "If you had just told me earlier that you were in therapy, I could have faced it with you..."
"That’s no excuse for you to cheat!" Vesper Grayson interrupted coldly. "While I was struggling in pain, desperately trying to heal myself, you were fooling around with some other young girl, indulging in carnal pleasure. You took Ivy Joyce to Varden, and I believe every word you said to your friends to put me down came straight from your heart. You did the deed, you said the words. So why the regret now? Why the remorse?"
All the strength seemed to drain from Luke Lockwood’s body in an instant. He abruptly raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face.
The crisp sound of the slap echoed down the hallway.
"You’re right. I’m just an asshole." His eyes reddened, and tears streamed uncontrollably down his face. "I regret it. I really know I was wrong. Can’t you just not sentence me to death? Give me a chance to make it up to you?"
In the past, seeing Luke like this would have surely softened her heart and made her waver. But it was all too late. He had long since exhausted all of her love and passion.
Someone else had taken up residence in her heart, leaving no room for him.
"I’m sorry, you’re out of chances." Vesper Grayson’s voice was light and distant. "But I should still thank you for what happened last time. I don’t regret meeting you or loving you, but I can’t forgive you. And it’s even more impossible for us to bury the hatchet and for me to fall in love with you again."
Luke Lockwood’s heart sank into an icy abyss, inch by inch. "Vesper..."
"I hope we can both live well from now on. Let all the love and hate from the past end here." Vesper Grayson didn’t want to hear any more of his repentance. Every additional word was meaningless.
’Adults always have to pay the price for their actions.’
Luke Lockwood was silent for a long time, then his tone turned obsessive and stubborn. "Even if you don’t give me a chance, I won’t give up. But I won’t bother you. I’ll just keep waiting."
’I’ll wait for the day they break up, for the day she’s single again.’
"That’s your business. I have no right to interfere. But I’d advise you not to waste your effort." Vesper Grayson’s tone shifted slightly. "Can I have a few strands of your hair?"
Luke Lockwood froze, his eyes full of confusion. "What do you need hair for?"
"I can’t tell you right now."
’I’m not completely sure of Luke’s identity yet. If it’s not him, I’d just be getting Second Aunt’s hopes up for nothing.’
Luke Lockwood lowered his head slightly. "Take as many as you want. Pull them out yourself."
Vesper Grayson didn’t stand on ceremony. She reached out and yanked out a few strands, carefully wrapped them in a tissue, and put them in her bag.
"What are you two doing?"
A deep, cold male voice suddenly rang out. Jared Hawthorne strode closer, pulling Vesper Grayson protectively into his arms. His dark eyes, filled with unconcealed hostility, were fixed on Luke Lockwood.
"You just don’t go away, do you? I seem to run into you everywhere."
Luke Lockwood returned his cold stare. "That’s my business, Mr. Hawthorne. You’re overstepping. I did do something wrong and made Vesper sad and disappointed, but who’s to say you won’t make a mistake in the future? Who can guarantee you two will last forever?"
"I’m afraid you won’t get the chance to poach." A cold smirk played on Jared Hawthorne’s lips as he pulled a marriage certificate out of his pocket. "Look closely. I’m legally certified. She is my lawful wife. Unlike some people, who wouldn’t know a treasure if they saw one, mistaking fish eyes for pearls."
Luke Lockwood stared at the bright red marriage certificate, his pupils contracting abruptly.
’They’re actually married!’
’Impossible. This can’t be real. It has to be a ploy he’s using to drive me away.’
He reached out to snatch it, but Jared Hawthorne pulled it back a step ahead of him and put it back in his pocket.
"Vesper has already chosen me, so you’d best give up hope."
Jared Hawthorne took her hand and turned to walk back to the private room. Vesper Grayson looked at his tense, hard profile, reached out a finger to poke him gently, and asked in a small voice, "Are you mad?"
"No." His tone was cold and hard.
"Yes, you are... I didn’t expect him to be here," Vesper Grayson explained in a low voice. "I had a reason for talking to him."
Jared Hawthorne lowered his gaze, giving her a cool glance. His look clearly demanded a convincing explanation.
Vesper Grayson took a photo from her bag and handed it to him.
"What’s this?"
The photo was of a jade pendant carved with a plum blossom.
"Second Aunt gave this to me. She said this pendant was an heirloom from her mother. After her son was born, she always kept it tied around his neck."
"And?"
"Luke Lockwood has an identical one. He told me that when the orphanage director found him, this pendant was already on him."
Jared Hawthorne’s expression instantly darkened.
"You suspect he’s Second Aunt’s son?"
"Mhm. That’s why I just asked him for a few strands of his hair. I want to run a DNA comparison between him and Second Aunt."
Jared Hawthorne frowned slightly. "Didn’t Second Aunt say her son has a black mole on his lower back...?"
"Luke has one too. I hadn’t remembered it until I saw the photo Second Aunt gave me." Vesper Grayson bit her lip. "It’s possible that Luke really is Second Aunt’s long-lost son, which would make him your cousin."
Just then, Vesper Grayson’s phone rang. It was Nancy Linton.
"Vesper, I have news about my son!" Nancy Linton’s voice was filled with irrepressible excitement and joy. "I got a call this evening. The person on the other end said they saw my family search notice and thought they looked a lot like me. I just video-chatted with them, and the resemblance is definitely there. We’ve arranged to meet tomorrow. Can you come with me?"
