My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 29: Does Miss Grayson Owe Me Another Favor?Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Does Miss Grayson Owe Me Another Favor?
Jared Hawthorne was used to her two-faced act. He chuckled lightly. "By that logic, doesn’t Miss Grayson owe me another favor?"
"Didn’t I already compensate you last night?"
Vesper Grayson replied subconsciously.
"Let’s not mix the two. Last night, I helped Miss Grayson out of a jam..."
She froze for a moment, then snapped back to her senses.
"You were the one who had Mr. Chandler step in and help me last night?"
"What do you think?"
’No wonder...’
’At the time, I was curious why Sean Chandler would show up to help me. Could it be he had other intentions?’
’Looks like I was just flattering myself.’
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
’If Sean Chandler hadn’t intervened, the hotel manager and Gael Keane might have ganged up on me. I wouldn’t have been able to produce any solid evidence and would have had to just suffer in silence.’
"Am I not telling you now?"
"..."
Vesper Grayson lowered her gaze, her fingertips curling around her phone. "In that case, President Hawthorne, how would you like me to repay you?"
Before he could answer, she quickly added,
"Your needs aren’t that... voracious, are they, President Hawthorne?"
Jared Hawthorne raised an eyebrow. "I haven’t decided yet. You can owe me for now."
"..."
...
"Have you found her?"
「President’s office, The Lockwood Group, Ashmore.」
Luke Lockwood sat on the sofa, his expression grim. The atmosphere was oppressive.
"Miss Grayson has already left Ashmore. On..." The assistant hesitated. "On the day of the wedding, she bought a plane ticket to Northolme."
’Ever since Secretary Joyce went on paid maternity leave, he had been transferred to work for President Lockwood.’
’The entire company had heard about what happened at the wedding.’
’Who would have thought that the seemingly noble and upright President Lockwood was actually having a secret affair with Secretary Joyce behind Miss Grayson’s back.’
’What a scumbag!’
’But for the sake of his high-paying job, he could only despise him in secret.’
"Northolme?"
"Yes."
Luke Lockwood frowned, remaining silent.
’Why would she choose to go to Northolme? Was she really willing to throw away their three years together and go to a strange city?’
Suddenly remembering something, he looked down and started rummaging through a pile of documents.
He quickly found an invitation to a tech summit in Northolme.
’He had received the invitation half a month ago and hadn’t planned on going, but now he’d changed his mind.’
’He was going to Northolme.’
’He had to get Vesper back!’
"Book two tickets to Northolme for the day after tomorrow. You’ll accompany me."
"Yes."
Harold Warner left the office just as it was time for lunch.
He went to the cafeteria to eat.
After getting his food, he spotted a familiar figure, walked over, and sat down across from her.
"Dolly, I’m going on a business trip with President Lockwood the day after tomorrow."
Dolly Hughes nodded.
"Okay, I got it."
She and Harold Warner were college classmates. After joining The Lockwood Group, they started dating.
They had been secretly dating for a year, hiding it so well that no one had noticed.
"Aren’t you curious why President Lockwood is going to Northolme?"
"Why?"
"Because I found out Miss Grayson went to Northolme."
Dolly Hughes looked up. "You mean, President Lockwood is going to look for Sister Vesper?"
"Mhm."
"How does he have the nerve to go look for Sister Vesper!"
’That little vixen, Ivy Joyce, is pregnant with his child, too.’
"I despise him for it too, but we’re just lowly employees. What can we do about it?"
"Harold, you can’t help him bully Sister Vesper. Even if you find her, you have to hide it from President Lockwood! Otherwise, I’m breaking up with you."
"Don’t worry, I’ll play it by ear."
「Inside the office.」
Luke Lockwood stared at the food in front of him, unable to swallow a bite.
’Ever since Vesper left him, he hadn’t had a single proper meal.’
’She used to specially prepare all three of his daily meals and deliver them to him personally.’
’She knew he had stomach problems, so she made his food with little oil and salt. Although it was simple, it was always perfect in color, aroma, and flavor.’
’After he finished eating, she would thoughtfully brew him a pot of hot tea.’
’Over the past three years, he had grown completely accustomed to her care.’
He took the jade pendant from his drawer.
The jade felt smooth and warm, and it seemed to faintly carry Vesper’s unique, sweet scent.
He put the pendant around his neck and slowly closed his eyes, feeling for a moment as if Vesper were right there beside him.
Suddenly, a sharp pain twisted in his stomach.
The color instantly drained from his handsome face. He clutched his stomach, the pain so intense his lips turned white.
’Medicine.’
’He remembered Vesper kept painkillers for him in his office.’
He pulled open the second drawer on the left. A white porcelain bottle sat quietly in the corner.
He reached for it, twisted off the cap, and tipped it into his mouth.
He suddenly realized—it was empty.
’Only then did he remember that he’d finished the medicine last week.’
’He never paid attention to these things.’
’Vesper had always been the one to restock it for him. Whenever he needed painkillers, there was always a full supply of pills.’
"Harold!"
He yelled toward the door a few times.
There was no response.
Fighting through the pain, he dialed Harold’s number.
By the time Harold Warner rushed over, Luke Lockwood was slumped over his desk, his face deathly pale.
"President Lockwood, what’s wrong?"
"Go. Take this to the pharmacy and get me a bottle of painkillers."
Harold Warner acknowledged and took the porcelain bottle.
Ten minutes later, he returned.
"President Lockwood, the pharmacist said these painkillers are a special formula made from pure traditional medicine. They don’t sell them at the pharmacy. I could only get you some ibuprofen."
"Give it to me!"
Luke Lockwood snatched it, shook out a few pills, and swallowed them with cold water.
Not only did the pain not subside, but the discomfort actually grew worse.
Seeing that something was wrong, Harold Warner quickly called for an ambulance.
Luke Lockwood had been an orphan and often went hungry as a child, his meals erratic. This left him with chronic stomach problems. Later, when he was starting his business, he had to drink with clients to secure deals, and over time, he began to suffer from frequent, sharp stomach pains.
Since Vesper had started managing his diet, his attacks hadn’t been as frequent these past two years.
As Luke Lockwood was wheeled away by the ambulance, Dolly Hughes cursed inwardly: ’Serves him right!’
She immediately made a call.
"Sister Vesper, am I bothering you?"
Vesper Grayson had just parked her car in the hotel lot when she got the call from Dolly Hughes.
"No, Dolly. What’s up?"
"There’s something I think you should know, Sister Vesper. President Lockwood knows you’re in Northolme. He’s coming here the day after tomorrow for a business trip to attend the summit, and he’s planning to look for you."
’It wasn’t surprising that Luke Lockwood had managed to find out she was in Northolme.’
’It was only a matter of time.’
"Okay, I understand. Thanks for calling to tell me."
"And I have some other news that will make you very happy. Just now, President Lockwood was wheeled away in an ambulance because of his stomach pain."
Hearing this, Vesper Grayson felt nothing.
’In the past, her heart would have ached for him and she would have cried.’
’She suddenly realized she didn’t love Luke Lockwood anymore!’
After hanging up, she entered the hotel.
She pushed open the door to a private room and saw Jared Hawthorne engaged in a lively conversation with a sexy, mature woman.
The woman had chestnut-brown hair in large, French-style waves. Her features were striking, her heavy eye makeup was drawn into a cool, elegant line, her lip color was fiery, and she had a formidable aura.
Hearing the sound, the two of them stopped talking and turned to look at her.
"Come here."
Jared Hawthorne took out a cigarette, holding it between his fingers as he spoke nonchalantly.
She walked over and sat down obediently beside him.
"Yance, aren’t you going to introduce me?" the woman said with a flirtatious smile.
"Vesper Grayson. My woman."
Vesper Grayson’s face flushed red, and her heart instantly started pounding uncontrollably.
’This damn man, what kind of introduction was that?’
"Wow. This is the first time I’ve ever heard you acknowledge anyone."
The woman’s gaze swept between them, a suggestive smile on her face.
Jared Hawthorne’s thin lips curved slightly. "Vesper, this is my senior from school, Jane Winters. She’s also the president of Vaudin Asia-Pacific, Elena."
’Vesper Grayson was surprised. She hadn’t expected the president of the Asia-Pacific region to be so young.’
’She looked like she was only in her twenties.’
"Hello, Elena."
"Lucky girl. You’re the first woman to ever capture Yance’s heart. You must have something special about you."
The look she gave Vesper was intriguing.
