Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Ensure Her Safety

’So that’s how it is.’

Then no one else was to blame.

"Okay, I understand," she said, her voice remarkably calm.

’I helped him climb to the top back then. Whether he can hold onto his position is up to him now!’

"Sister Vesper, there’s even more explosive news! After President Lockwood was kicked out of the company, Ivy Joyce went to see him. The police showed up a little while later and arrested her on the spot."

"President Lockwood just watched coldly the whole time. He was so heartless. I suddenly feel a little sorry for Ivy Joyce."

"But pitiful people always have their detestable side. This is her karma."

Vesper Grayson lowered her gaze. She didn’t feel much satisfaction, only the cold, heartless nature of Luke Lockwood.

He and Ivy Joyce had been having an affair behind her back for two years. Now that everything was out in the open, she had made a graceful exit to let them be, yet he was the one who wouldn’t let go.

Last time, Luke Lockwood had used her "pregnancy" as an excuse to bail her out of the police station. Now, he had personally destroyed her only safeguard.

’A man’s heart is truly fickle and impossible to fathom.’

After hanging up, Vesper Grayson looked out the window and slowly wrapped her arms around herself.

She didn’t regret her reckless courage in love or the true feelings she had given, but she ached for the part of herself that had given her heart to the wrong person.

’Money and glamor wear down a person’s character the most. Once you have it, you change. So few people can remain true to themselves.’

After she finished tidying up, the city lights began to glitter outside. All of Northolme was aglow with neon.

She took the elevator down and got a call from Shiloh Sloan.

She answered with a smile. "Shiloh?"

The other end of the line was noisy, with the faint sound of curses and vulgarities.

Shiloh Sloan’s anxious voice came through.

"Vesper, I’m at 12 Northolme River Road! Hurry and bring some people to get me!"

Vesper Grayson’s eyes hardened. "What happened?"

"I came over here to try my luck, looking for some reliable muscle, but I accidentally stumbled upon a dr*g deal..." Shiloh Sloan said, gasping for air.

"I’m on my way to get you now." She hurried to her car, started it, and asked, "Have you called the police?"

"No..."

"I’ll call them first. Send me your precise location."

After hanging up, Vesper Grayson immediately called the police and sped toward 12 Northolme River Road.

When she arrived, the police hadn’t reached the scene yet.

Worried for Shiloh Sloan’s safety, Vesper Grayson found a folding utility knife in her car and plunged into the entrance of the underground black market.

Having never been there before, she didn’t realize how much attention a beautiful woman like her would attract by coming to the underground black market alone.

By the time she noticed, several men were already closing in on her, eyeing her like predators.

Vesper Grayson realized what was happening, but it was too late.

Just as the men were about to make their move, a figure stepped in front of her.

"What do you think you’re doing?"

Seeing his burly frame and intimidating presence, the men knew at a glance he wasn’t someone to mess with. They exchanged a look and scattered.

"Miss Grayson, are you all right?" the man asked in a low voice, turning around.

Vesper Grayson recognized him. "You’re... Jared Hawthorne’s driver?"

Leon Quillan didn’t elaborate, just nodded. "I’m here on business. What brings you to a place like this?"

"I’m looking for a friend."

"Here, put this on first."

He held out a face mask to her.

Vesper Grayson thanked him, took the mask, put it on, and headed in the direction of her phone’s GPS location.

"Miss Grayson, don’t just run off! If you’re looking for someone..."

Before he could finish, she had already vanished from his sight.

’She’s so fast, you’d think she was a rabbit.’

Leon Quillan quickly called Jared Hawthorne. "President Hawthorne, I ran into Miss Grayson at 12 Northolme River Road. She seemed really anxious. If I hadn’t found her when I did, she would have been in trouble."

This place was a den of thieves, and a beautiful single woman walking around alone could easily get into trouble.

"Then why aren’t you following her to see what’s going on?" Jared Hawthorne’s displeased voice came through the phone.

"But President Hawthorne, I still have to make a contact..."

"Ensure her safety. Everything else can wait."

"Yes, sir."

Leon Quillan quickly chased after Vesper Grayson in the direction she had gone.

Soon, Vesper Grayson found Shiloh Sloan’s phone in a pile of junk. The screen was shattered like a spiderweb.

She looked around but couldn’t see Shiloh Sloan. Her heart, which had been in her throat, suddenly sank.

’Something hasn’t happened to Shiloh, has it?’

"Miss Grayson, slow down! What’s your friend’s name? Maybe I can help," Leon Quillan said, catching up to her, panting.

Vesper Grayson’s delicate brows furrowed. "Shiloh Sloan. She called and told me she stumbled into a deal between two groups... I already called the police before I came!"

Leon Quillan’s previously casual expression instantly turned serious. He grabbed her arm. "Then you absolutely shouldn’t be here. Come back up with me. When the police get here, they’ll find her for you."

"By the time the police get here, they’ll all be long gone, and Shiloh will be dead for sure!"

"But you being here won’t do any good either! I’ll contact my people and have them help you look!"

Without another word, Leon Quillan ignored her struggles and forcibly dragged her out.

Furious, Vesper Grayson pounded on him a few times, but the man didn’t seem to care at all. In fact, her own hands were the ones that ended up red and sore from hitting him.

’Like master, like man!’

"You..." She couldn’t remember his name.

"Miss Grayson, my name is Leon Quillan."

"I don’t care what your name is. What you said just now... you weren’t just trying to trick me, were you?"

"What did I say?"

He had said a lot just now and didn’t know which part she was asking about.

Vesper Grayson’s beautiful eyes widened slightly.

Leon Quillan scratched his head with a sheepish look. "Could you... remind me?"

"That you know people! That you’ll help me find her!" she forced the words out, her smile strained.

"Right, I’ll call right now." Leon Quillan snapped out of it and immediately took out his phone to make a call.

Just then, the sharp wail of sirens grew closer as the narcotics squad and local police arrived at the same time.

"Who called it in?"

Vesper Grayson immediately raised her hand. "I did!"

She quickly and briefly explained what had happened.

The police took immediate action, locking down all entrances and exits to the scene.

But this underground black market was a labyrinth, with crisscrossing paths and numerous hidden exits.

Although the police had sealed the main entrance, many people still managed to escape through the complex network of secret passages. In the end, they only caught a few suspicious-looking lackeys.

But Shiloh Sloan’s figure was conspicuously absent from the crowd.

The police loaded the lackeys into their vehicles, leaving a few officers behind to investigate the scene and conduct routine questioning.

Vesper Grayson was taken aside to give a statement, but her heart had turned completely cold, as if it had sunk into an ice cellar. Even her breath felt frigid.

"Miss Grayson, are you okay?" Leon Quillan asked, seeing her pale face. He tried to comfort her in a low voice, "Don’t worry too much. The fact they didn’t find her might mean your friend already managed to escape."

"What if... what if they dragged her away with them?" Vesper Grayson’s voice trembled, her eyes filled with panic.

Leon Quillan was blunt and couldn’t hold back. "She saw their faces. If she was captured, they’d definitely silence her."

Vesper Grayson’s legs gave out. Her body swayed violently, and the next second, she fell into a warm, solid embrace.
