My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable

Chapter 87: Luke Lockwood, I don’t love you anymore

Chapter 87: Chapter 87: Luke Lockwood, I don’t love you anymore

Vesper gazed at him calmly. The more clearly she saw him for who he was, the more disappointed she became.

Worse, she felt it had been a waste to have ever loved him.

’He was the one at fault. How did he have the nerve to say something so outrageous?’

"Luke Lockwood, I don’t love you anymore. With or without him, I will never give you another chance." Her lips curled into a sharp smile. "Come to think of it, I have you and Ivy Joyce to thank for meeting my current boyfriend."

"What do you mean?" Luke asked, his voice low.

"If you hadn’t been so careless and told Ivy Joyce what happened to me, how would she have dared to plot against me? How would she have dared to try and let three lowlifes completely destroy me?"

’Ivy Joyce wanted to see me lose control, to see me break down. She wanted to push me into an endless abyss and get rid of me without lifting a finger.’

"That’s when I met him. Maybe it was fate—I was healing, and I just happened to meet him."

"No..." Luke’s expression cracked. "I never intended to use that to hurt you," he said, his voice low. "I was drunk. I didn’t mean to tell her."

’He just resented Vesper’s secret affliction. Every time he watched her resist any form of intimacy, a powerful sense of frustration would wash over him like a silent tide.’

"There’s no point in saying any of this now!" She coolly averted her gaze. As she brushed past him, she said softly, "Go back. Go back where you belong."

’They were never from the same world. She had been too naive, thinking true love could conquer all. But in the end, the person who hurt her most deeply and viciously was the one she had once trusted the most.’

Luke reached out to grab her, but his fingers clutched at empty air.

He wanted to chase after her, but his feet felt rooted to the spot, unable to move an inch.

All he could do was watch helplessly as her figure disappeared around the corner.

She knocked on the door of the last guest room in the hallway.

A moment later, the door was pulled open from the inside. When Gwen Grayson saw who it was, an awkward expression flickered across her face.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to check on you. And to ask when you’re coming back to work."

She walked in and said flatly, "I’m swamped every day. I don’t want to keep covering your duties while you’re here slacking off."

Gwen, not expecting this, was stunned. She retorted instinctively.

"Who’s slacking off? My bruises haven’t even faded yet!"

"They’re almost gone. If you don’t go back soon, Miss Joyce will think I’m plotting to murder her precious daughter."

Gwen pursed her lips, giving her a complicated look.

"You want me to come back to the company soon?"

"The company doesn’t just belong to me; you have a stake in it too. You should get back and pull your weight. Otherwise, when it’s time for year-end bonuses, don’t start complaining again that Dad is playing favorites."

"..."

’In truth, while she had been away, Vesper, as vice president, could have easily taken over all her projects, absorbed her subordinates, and completely stripped her of any power within the company.’

’But she hadn’t kicked her while she was down or played any dirty tricks.’

When she heard no response, Vesper turned and raised an eyebrow at her. "Why aren’t you arguing back? You always used to love fighting your corner, didn’t you?"

Gwen lowered her eyes, her voice catching. "Vesper, you’re really infuriating."

"I don’t need you to like me. Now, hurry up and pack your things. You’re coming back with me."

She didn’t have many things, and Gwen was packed and ready in ten minutes.

Vesper led Gwen out. Not seeing Luke Lockwood in the hallway, she breathed a small sigh of relief.

’It seemed he had taken her words to heart.’

Once they were in the car, Vesper handed her some concealer from her bag.

"Cover it up with this. No one will notice."

Although a few bruises remained, they were much better than a few days ago. The swelling had gone down, and the discoloration had faded considerably.

Gwen didn’t hesitate. She took the concealer and began covering the remaining bruises on her face, trying to make small talk.

"When did you get a new car?"

’If I’m not mistaken,’ she thought, ’this car must cost over 1.5 million.’

Vesper kept her eyes on the road. "What? Are you thinking Dad bought this for me? That he’s playing favorites again?"

"..." Gwen choked on her words and said nothing.

’That wasn’t what she meant at all.’

But she didn’t feel like explaining herself.

’Yep, Vesper was as infuriating as ever.’

Vesper didn’t bother to explain, unfazed by the potential misunderstanding.

The car stopped in front of the Grayson Residence, and the two of them got out.

Joyce Rivers was in the courtyard again, tending to her hibiscus flowers. Hearing the commotion, she glanced up.

Upon seeing Gwen, she rushed over.

"Gwen, where have you been the last few days? I couldn’t reach you at all."

’The most sincere concern, straight from a mother’s heart.’

’If her own mother were still alive, perhaps she too would know a mother’s gentle affection, just like Gwen.’

"I went hiking, and the reception in the mountains was terrible..." She glanced over at Vesper as she spoke, but Vesper had already entered the foyer.

"You silly girl, going hiking without telling anyone. Do you know how worried I was?" Joyce Rivers lowered her voice. "Now that Vesper is in the company and holds a higher position than you, if you want to..."

Before she could finish, Gwen cut her off.

"Mom, Sister... she wouldn’t do that."

Joyce Rivers froze. "What did you call her?"

"Well, it’s the truth," Gwen said, pulling her mother along to change the subject. "I already transferred that money back to you. Please take care of the mortgage and the loan in the next day or two."

"You didn’t buy that batch of raw gemstones? Or did President Childs back out at the last minute?"

"Neither. He’s a huge liar. He was just trying to make a quick buck to cover his losses. It’s a good thing I found out in time, otherwise two hundred million would have gone right down the drain."

At the mention of Warren Childs, Gwen’s eyes seethed with hatred.

Just then, they saw Vesper carrying luggage out the door.

Gwen hurried over. "Where are you going?"

Vesper’s expression was indifferent. "I’m moving out, so I won’t be in your way anymore."

Gwen blocked her path.

"No one thinks you’re in the way. You’re Dad’s daughter, this is your home, too. Besides, if you leave, Dad will think we drove you away, and he’ll just take it out on Mom and me."

Hearing this, Joyce Rivers frowned and pulled her daughter aside.

"Gwen, this is your sister’s decision. Your father has already agreed to it."

’Silly girl,’ she thought. ’It’s a good thing Vesper is moving out. Otherwise, knowing how biased Nathaniel is, he might give her the entire company someday.’

"Dad agreed, too?" Gwen was stunned. ’But Dad adores her. How could he agree to let her move out?’

"Mm-hm."

Soon, all her things were loaded into the car. Vesper took one last look at the Grayson Residence from the window and drove away.

「Back at Citadel One.」

Joan helped her move her things in.

She had just caught her breath when she received a call from an unknown number.

"Miss, it’s me."

"I’m sorry, who is this?"

’The voice was a little familiar, but she couldn’t place it.’

"Last time, at Stellaris Plaza? You lent me 100,000 yuan. Thanks to you, my grandmother’s surgery today was a success!" The girl’s voice was filled with undisguised delight.

Vesper remembered then, and she smiled, happy for the girl. "That’s wonderful. Make sure you take good care of your grandmother."

’She had never even met her own grandmother.’

"I will. As soon as my grandmother recovers and is discharged from the hospital, I’ll find a job and earn the money to pay you back."

"There’s no rush. Pay me back whenever you’re financially stable."

The girl thanked her profusely before finally hanging up.

She went to the office that afternoon and was busy for most of the day. As evening approached, she received a call from Jared Hawthorne.

"Come on down."
