Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Alarmist Talk
The man smiled faintly at her words, affecting a calm demeanor. "That is correct. I am Julian Churchill, now in my fifties. My master was the world-renowned Saint of Medicine, and as his personal disciple, I have inherited his true knowledge."
Vesper Grayson’s gaze darkened. "But I’ve heard the Saint of Medicine was proud and reclusive, and did not take on disciples lightly. Are you certain you were his personal disciple?"
Julian Churchill’s expression remained unchanged as he let out a deliberate, sentimental sigh.
"Miss, there are some things you wouldn’t know. My master saw that my character was acceptable and made a rare exception to take me as his student. It was a fortunate opportunity that others could only envy."
’He said it all so earnestly; it was actually quite convincing!’
’If she didn’t know the truth, she might have actually believed his story.’
Sebastian Kensington gave a slight nod. "In that case, I must ask you to examine my grandmother, Mr. Churchill."
Julian Churchill stepped forward to take her pulse. A moment later, his brow furrowed, and he shook his head with feigned gravity.
"The old lady’s pulse is faint, her vital energy and blood are depleted, and her organs are on the verge of collapse. If we delay any longer, I’m afraid she doesn’t have much time. She has a month left to live, at most."
’A complete charlatan, just as I suspected.’
’When I checked her pulse earlier, I knew the old woman was frail and terminally ill, but she should have had at least three months left. How did her lifespan shrink by two months the moment he opened his mouth?’
The old woman trembled, a flash of shock crossing her face. But a moment later, she seemed to relax into a state of resignation and gently closed her eyes.
Sebastian Kensington’s expression changed abruptly. He took a step forward and pleaded, "Mr. Churchill, as long as you can save my grandmother, I’ll pay any price. Money is no object, you can name whatever fee you want!"
A glint flashed in Julian Churchill’s eyes. He feigned a thoughtful expression and said, "Our meeting must be fate. Seeing your devotion, I will make an exception and take action. I am certain I can cure the old lady’s illness."
He immediately took out an Elixir and handed it over. "This is an Elixir I’ve refined. Have the old lady take it with warm water."
Not long after Mrs. Kensington took the Elixir, her spirits improved noticeably, and a healthy color gradually returned to her pale face.
Sebastian Kensington’s heart leaped. He quickly leaned over and asked, "Grandma, how are you feeling?"
The old woman slowly opened her eyes, her voice much lighter as she raised a hand to gently touch her chest.
"My body feels much lighter, the tightness in my chest is gone. I feel a lot better."
When Vesper Grayson saw the old woman’s color return, she hesitated for a moment. ’Could I have been wrong about him?’
’He might be a fraud using the name of the Saint of Medicine’s successor, but his methods seem to have some real substance. This world is full of hidden masters and untapped talents. What if he really does have some ability?’
’But the thought of him running scams under the name of the Saint of Medicine’s successor still left her with a poor impression of him.’
The situation changed in an instant.
Mrs. Kensington, who had seemed to be in high spirits, suddenly turned deathly pale. Her breathing grew ragged, her chest heaved violently, and her body seemed to collapse. It was as if that brief recovery had been nothing more than a final, fleeting rally.
Everyone present was thrown into a panic.
Mr. and Mrs. Kensington had been downstairs entertaining guests. Hearing that the successor to the Saint of Medicine had been found, they had come up to see how things were going.
They walked in just in time to witness the shocking scene.
"Mom! What’s happening?"
Mr. Kensington rushed over, lifted Mrs. Kensington onto the bed, and began frantically pressing the acupoint beneath her nose while trying to massage her limbs.
"Mr. Churchill, what in the world is happening?!" Sebastian Kensington’s face fell, his usually gentle and refined features contorting with fury.
But Julian Churchill maintained his calm facade, trying to placate them in a deep voice. "Don’t panic. This is just the medicine taking effect; it’s a normal reaction! I will perform acupuncture on the old lady right now to stabilize her vital signs!"
With that, he took a silver needle from his personal acupuncture kit, carefully wiped it clean, and raised his hand to insert it into the old woman.
’Those are just ordinary silver needles. They can’t treat the old woman’s condition—in fact, they’ll do more harm than good!’
Just as he was about to insert the needle, Vesper suddenly stepped forward, grabbed his hand to stop him, and placed her fingers on Mrs. Kensington’s wrist to check her pulse.
Her gaze darkened. "Can I see the Elixir you refined?"
Stopped in front of everyone, Julian Churchill’s expression soured, and he looked at her with open annoyance.
"You practice medicine?"
"A little."
Julian Churchill gave her a sidelong glance, his eyes full of contempt. Certain she wouldn’t be able to tell anything, he casually took out an Elixir and handed it over.
Vesper Grayson pinched it between her fingertips and brought it to her nose for a light sniff. Her expression changed immediately.
A heavy, metallic stench of cinnabar, mixed with the smell of several potent, volatile herbs, was acrid and overpowering.
The medicine was extremely potent, relying entirely on cinnabar to forcibly draw out the body’s foundational life force. It made the person appear to be in good spirits, but it was just a false resurgence achieved by overdrafting their vitality.
’No wonder the old woman’s face grew rosy right after she took it—it was all an illusion!’
Julian Churchill once again moved to apply the needle to Mrs. Kensington.
"Wait. You can’t insert that needle."
Seeing her stop him again, Julian Churchill grew stern. "If you dare to interfere again and delay this treatment, not even a god will be able to save the old lady!"
Mrs. Kensington stepped in front of her, her face filled with disapproval. "Miss, stop making trouble. If something happens to the matriarch, can you take responsibility for it?"
She then ordered the butler to escort Vesper out.
Vesper Grayson frowned. "That Elixir contains cinnabar and other harsh stimulants. Taking it creates the illusion of recovery, but it’s just a false resurgence from forcibly draining her life force. If you apply that needle, the old woman will die instantly."
’She couldn’t just stand by and watch someone commit murder right in front of her.’
"What nonsense are you spouting! Who did you even come here with? What is your motive?" Mrs. Kensington’s expression was severe, her gaze sharp as a blade.
Sebastian Kensington’s gaze hardened slightly. "Miss Grayson, Mr. Churchill is the successor to the Saint of Medicine. He would never harm my grandmother."
Julian Churchill let out a cold laugh, his eyes filled with disdain and contempt.
"You have a bit of superficial knowledge and you dare to lecture an expert? How dare you spread such alarmist nonsense here!"
’Who’s the real fear-monger here?’
Vesper Grayson’s expression grew cold. She met his gaze and said slowly, enunciating each word, "You use these heretical methods to harm people, running scams that drain their life force. Aren’t you afraid of committing such an unconscionable act and suffering the karmic consequences?"
Just then, the old woman’s breathing suddenly weakened. Her eyes closed, and she fell unconscious.
Seeing this, Mr. Kensington was panic-stricken. Furious and frantic, he yelled, "Enough! Both of you, stop arguing! Butler, get this young lady out of here! Don’t let her delay the miracle doctor!"
As the butler moved to escort her out, Noah Nash pulled her away first and offered a quiet, well-meaning reminder.
"Miss Grayson, your medical knowledge is still limited. It’s best you don’t get involved. If something happens to the old woman, the Kensington Family will likely blame you."
’Kensington looked terrifying just now!’
Vesper Grayson’s brow was knitted tightly. ’As if I don’t know that,’ she thought. But that Julian Churchill was clearly an incompetent fraud.
"Mr. Nash, he’s a charlatan! He’s going to kill her." She turned to go back and stop him.
Just then, Jared Hawthorne finished his phone call and returned to see the two of them standing outside the room.
He asked in a low voice, "What happened?"
Vesper Grayson looked at him as if he were her savior. She grabbed his arm and quickly explained what had just happened inside.
Noah Nash tried to reason with him in a low voice. "Elias, they’re just making a last-ditch effort at this point. It’s better to stay out of it. Kensington was already in critical condition. If something goes wrong, the Kensington Family will inevitably blame us."
Jared Hawthorne didn’t answer, merely lifting his gaze to Vesper Grayson and gently placing the decision in her hands. "Vesper, what do you want to do?"
