Shane Grant wasn’t in the best of health, but once he put on a crisp shirt and a tailored suit, he cut an impressively sharp figure.
Walking into the company with his assistant and Cecelia Archer, Shane Grant felt a wave of desolation wash over him.
The atmosphere at the company used to be so positive and vibrant, bustling with energy.
But in less than a month, what had it become?
Many workstations were empty. The employees who were at their desks looked listless, and seemed to be slacking off.
When they saw him walk in unexpectedly, they looked startled and hurriedly turned on their computers.
He suddenly felt he had been letting love cloud his judgment.
If a man wants to be with a woman, he shouldn’t try to lock her away and keep her from all other men.
Instead, he should continuously display his own charm, so that even if she meets others, she won’t have the slightest interest in them.
’I must have been muddled by my illness,’ he thought. ’To think I was ready to throw away my career just to keep Cecelia Archer by my side.’
Having come to this realization, Shane Grant entered the conference room in high spirits.
Lately, the executives and shareholders had grown pessimistic about the company’s future. Some were planning to go their own way, preparing to withdraw their investments bit by bit, while some executives had even started sending out their resumes.
They hadn’t expected Shane Grant to suddenly return and call a meeting. Weren’t the rumors that he was on his last legs?
Shane Grant first greeted everyone, then got straight to the point.
"Let’s not waste any time. I’ll begin. I’ve called you all here today to announce something. This is Luna Linden, the president of my newly established public relations department. From now on, you will all address her as President Linden."
Everyone was utterly confused. ’The company is in this state, and he’s creating a new department? And appointing a new president? Has he lost his mind?!’
Shane Grant continued, "President Linden is extremely capable. She has just joined our company and has already secured a major deal for us. Starting tomorrow, we will be taking over the International Airport project jointly with the Vaughn Group."
What? Everyone was stunned for a moment, and then the conference room erupted.
"President Grant, is this true? The Vaughn Group is actually going to partner with us? This is..."
Everyone looked at the young, slender woman with a newfound sense of admiration.
Shane Grant seized the opportunity to establish Cecelia Archer’s authority.
"This is all thanks to President Linden’s efforts. Therefore, once the project is established, she will take the lead. All departments must cooperate with her work unconditionally."
After the meeting, Shane Grant had his assistant process Cecelia Archer’s onboarding at the company, rush-ordered a personal seal for her, and then handed her his own presidential seal as well.
"Since this is what you want to do, go for it with everything you’ve got. From now on, I’ll stay home, rest up, and look after the kids. You can be the breadwinner."
Cecelia Archer was overjoyed that day.
Early the next morning, Ryan gave her a call.
"Miss Linden. At eight o’clock, please bring the relevant managers from Grant Group to our main conference room for a meeting. Don’t be late."
Cecelia was grateful that Ryan was pretending not to know her. "Got it."
At eight o’clock sharp, Cecelia Archer sat at the conference table, accompanied by several senior managers from Grant Properties.
Likewise, Damien Vaughn appeared right on time with his senior managers from Vaughn Properties.
Yesterday, Damien Vaughn had held a meeting to announce the partnership with Grant Group. The team at Vaughn Properties was initially unhappy, but Damien had shut them down with a single sharp retort.
"If you’re all so capable, then why have you consistently been one-upped by Grant Properties? If I hadn’t pushed so hard for this project, could you have really secured it on your own? Are you all so certain that you have the ability to handle this project perfectly and not bring shame to the Vaughn name?"
No one dared to speak after that.
As a result, today’s meeting went very smoothly.
Everyone had come to terms with it: with Grant Group on board, if the project didn’t go well, they wouldn’t be the only ones to blame. Though the glory would be shared, so would the risk. All in all, it wasn’t a bad deal.
The teams quickly went through a round of self-introductions and greetings. Just as the meeting was about to conclude, Damien Vaughn suddenly pulled out his phone.
"Ryan, get everyone’s WeChat, create a dedicated project group, and add me to it. From now on, any issues can be discussed in the group at any time. And if there’s anything you can’t resolve, you can contact me directly."
The eyes of the Grant Group executives immediately lit up.
’We always heard the president of the Vaughn Group was a ruthless workaholic that everyone feared,’ they thought, ’but he doesn’t seem that way at all today.’
’He’s young, handsome, and so approachable, and now he’s going to be in a work group with us. We really have to thank President Linden for this!’
Without her, how would they ever have had the chance to connect with Damien Vaughn?
The bragging rights they’d have after this project would be off the charts!
Everyone happily took out their phones. After a flurry of activity from Ryan, the International Airport project group was created.
"Please take a moment to change your display name to include your full name and department to make communication easier," Ryan announced.
Damien Vaughn began to edit his name as well, and everyone else immediately tapped on his profile picture to check out his profile and scroll through his Moments.
Unfortunately, he was a very private person, and his profile offered no clues about his personal life.
His Moments just showed a single line, indicating it was private. His profile picture was of a dark plaque, on which the single character for Vaughn was written in powerful, cursive script.
Similarly, Damien Vaughn noticed that Cecelia Archer had also changed her name, and he tapped on her profile picture to view her profile and Moments.
The two of them used to have each other’s contact information, but after the incident, Shane Grant had given her a completely new identity, complete with a new phone number and WeChat account.
Cecelia’s current WeChat profile picture was similar to his—mostly pitch black, but with a beam of light shining down from the top center, illuminating a pair of slender hands cupped together as if holding something.
If you looked closely, you could make out the beam of light and the pair of hands. But if you didn’t zoom in, the whole thing resembled a single, blocky character, like a simple drawing of a windowpane.
He wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but Damien Vaughn felt that her profile picture looked like a matching couple’s version of his own.
Likewise, Cecelia’s Moments feed was also completely empty.
The conference room fell silent as everyone fiddled with their phones. Ryan leaned in and whispered in Damien Vaughn’s ear.
"President Vaughn, should we let them head back after this, or should we arrange for their reception according to our usual protocol for important clients?"
The Vaughn Group had a long-standing tradition: when important clients visited, the PR department was responsible not only for arranging their meals and accommodations but also for escorting them throughout their stay.
He had never paid much attention to this before, but Ryan’s reminder gave him an idea.
"Go ahead and arrange it. Let them get to know one another. It will help with our work together in the future."
"Understood. I’ll go make the arrangements."
Ryan spoke with the PR department, then announced to the group that accommodations and meals would be arranged for the day. The atmosphere in the room immediately became even more congenial.
But Cecelia Archer didn’t want to go.
She was the only woman there, which would be awkward.
"I’m sorry, I have something else I need to attend to. I’ll join everyone next time. Please, have a good time."
’Then what would be the point of President Vaughn arranging all this?’
Ryan was sharp; he had guessed Damien Vaughn’s true intentions perfectly, and he immediately moved to stop her.
"Oh, come on, President Linden. The whole point of this is to give everyone a chance to get acquainted. As the team leader, how could you not go? Besides, President Vaughn specifically instructed me to accompany you."
