My Child and I Married a Billionaire

Chapter 256: Why Does She Look So Much Like Her?

Ryan was speechless for a moment before returning to the office to report to Damien Vaughn.

"President Vaughn, everything for the Windmount project has been arranged."

Damien Vaughn’s hands paused, but his expression remained calm.

"That was fast. Understood."

’Understood? That’s it? Isn’t he going to ask how Cecelia Archer reacted to the news?’

Ryan really couldn’t figure out what he was thinking. He felt sorry for Cecelia Archer but didn’t dare say it directly.

"Miss Archer has already started packing. She’s going all by herself... Should I create a project group chat and add you to it? That way she can report directly to you if anything comes up."

Damien Vaughn was seething with anger.

’That damn woman, she agreed so readily. Doesn’t she know how tough it will be? That she’ll be gone for a long time?’

’She’s not reluctant to leave anyone behind? Not even Shane Grant in the hospital? Is it her daughter she can’t bear to leave?’

’I thought I could use this to put her in her place, make her come to me and surrender...’

’Since she’s so proud, so eager to suffer, then let her suffer!’

"Do I have to personally oversee such a trivial matter? Do I look like I have nothing better to do?"

Damien Vaughn’s voice suddenly rose as he slammed the mouse in his hand onto the desk.

"From now on, don’t tell me anything about her. It’s ridiculous."

Ryan: "..."

After leaving the office, Ryan was completely certain that President Vaughn and Cecelia Archer were fighting.

’I don’t know what happened, but I’m sure of one thing: President Vaughn doesn’t actually want to make things difficult for Cecelia Archer. He’s just...’

’I don’t know what word to use to describe his behavior, but once he cools down, he’ll definitely go back to caring about Cecelia Archer. I can’t take what he said in a fit of anger at face value. Otherwise, when he starts feeling sorry for her again, I’ll be the one who suffers.’

Ryan sat back down at his workstation and quickly added all the project leads to a group chat, including Cecelia Archer.

He introduced Cecelia Archer to the group and expressed his hope that everyone would cooperate with her. The people in the group chat readily agreed.

After being busy for half the day, Ryan was very thirsty and went to the breakroom.

Just as he left, Gwen Morgan arrived at the executive office, her figure graceful and elegant.

Ever since Damien Vaughn had changed the lock on his office door, she hadn’t been inside, but she still came by from time to time.

Even if she couldn’t interact with Damien Vaughn directly, getting in touch with Ryan was still a good thing.

Ryan knew who she was and wouldn’t dare hide Damien Vaughn’s schedule from her. Everything was still within her grasp.

’Ryan’s always here when I come by. Why isn’t he here today?’

Gwen Morgan asked the other two assistants. When one of them replied that Ryan had gone to the breakroom, she plopped down in Ryan’s chair.

Ryan had only been gone for a moment, and his computer screen hadn’t locked yet. Bored, Gwen Morgan moved his mouse and casually clicked open his WeChat.

The chat history for the Windmount project group was still on the screen, right at the top. She saw it at a glance.

’Windmount? Building roads, setting up power lines, renovating a school? What the hell kind of project is this? It sounds completely unrelated to the Vaughn Group. Why is the president’s special assistant personally overseeing it?’

She didn’t get it, but when she saw Ryan telling everyone in the group to fully cooperate with a woman named Luna Linden, her curiosity was piqued.

She took out her phone and found the WeChat for Miller, the project manager from the engineering department.

In the time since Gwen Morgan had joined the company, she had already used her connections to get on good terms with the heads of various departments.

She had been personally brought in by the Old Master, was the darling of the Morgan Family, and was Damien Vaughn’s childhood friend. Everyone who needed to know, knew why she was at the company. As word spread, no one dared to disrespect her.

Gwen Morgan asked him directly what the Windmount project was all about, and Miller answered.

Although Gwen Morgan found it boring, she understood.

After all, the Vaughn Group valued its brand image and reputation. Doing some charity work from time to time was good for the company.

"Why aren’t you in charge of it directly? Who is this Luna Linden? Which department head is she? How come I’ve never heard of her?"

Mentioning this made Miller angry.

It was bad enough being sent to suffer in that godforsaken place, but now some woman had been dropped in out of nowhere to lead him.

Anyone who didn’t know the situation would hear about it and think he’d committed some heinous crime and that President Vaughn was punishing him!

"She’s not from our company. She’s from Grant Group. I heard she’s the special assistant to the President of Grant Group, just some young girl who recently graduated. She was originally in charge of the international airport project, but who knows what happened..."

"I don’t understand what a charity project has to do with Grant Group, but we’re just subordinates, so we can’t say much. We do what leadership tells us to do."

Gwen Morgan grew even more curious.

She had heard a few days ago about the Vaughn Group and Grant Group collaborating on the international airport. She already didn’t understand why Damien Vaughn would give away half the pie, and now he was letting someone from another company lead a charity project?

"President Miller, do you have a photo of Luna Linden?"

’I want to see what kind of girl is so capable.’

’Not only did she become the Grant Group president’s special assistant right after graduating, but now she’s even meddling in our Vaughn Group!’

Miller paused for a moment before sending a photo. Judging by the angle, it was a candid shot.

"This is the only one. Someone thought she was pretty and secretly took it when she came to the company for a meeting before."

"Miss Morgan, why are you looking at her? She’s somewhat pretty, sure, but she’s nothing compared to you. People like her will do anything to climb the ladder. They may look pure on the surface, but who knows what they’re like behind the scenes..."

He sent a few more long paragraphs of complaints and flattery, but Gwen Morgan wasn’t paying attention anymore.

She zoomed in on the blurry photo again and again, her face a mask of disbelief.

’Cecelia Archer?’

’How does the person in this photo look so much like Cecelia Archer?’

’Impossible! Isn’t she already dead?’

’Then this photo...’

’Could it be that there’s another woman in the world who looks exactly like her?’

’No wonder!’

It all clicked for Gwen Morgan.

’No wonder she’s representing the Grant Group to manage a project at the Vaughn Group.’

’No wonder she was put in charge of this charity project. So that’s why...’

Her heart felt as if a hundred needles had been plunged into it at once, the pain so sharp that Gwen Morgan felt tears welling up.

’Damien Vaughn, oh, Damien Vaughn, you’ve really outdone yourself!’

’Do you love Cecelia Archer that much? You just can’t let her go?’

’Even after she killed your mother with her own hands, even after she killed herself out of guilt, you still can’t help but be moved when you see a woman who looks just like her? You can’t help but want something to happen??’

Looking at the faint smile on the woman’s face in the photo, and then thinking of her own humble position, Gwen Morgan wanted to tear her to shreds through the screen!

"You’re right, President Miller. Nowadays, there are more and more girls with crooked intentions."

"You’ve worked so hard for so many years. It would be far too ironic if all the credit ended up being stolen by some little brat who slept her way to the top."

Miller was only second-in-command on this project and was already unhappy about it. With Miss Morgan’s encouragement, he became even more fired up.

"Right? Even you can see how wronged I am, Miss Morgan. But... sigh! There’s nothing I can do. What can I say, I’m just a man. In some things, we’re naturally no match for them."

"Well, you can’t just accept your fate. If not for yourself, you should think about your family. If you pull this off perfectly, a promotion could earn you at least an extra 200,000 a year. By saying you’re ’no match for them,’ you’re throwing away 200,000 every year. By the time your son grows up, that’s an entire house you’ve lost."

When she laid out the math like that, Miller suddenly felt a fresh wave of indignation.
