My Child and I Married a Billionaire
Chapter 270: Never Seen Such Ingratitude’Cecelia found it truly bizarre.’
’She never knew Damien Vaughn knew so much about medicine. How had he become some kind of Demi Immortal overnight? And he even knew that coldness enters the body through the soles of the feet?’
’She hadn’t forgotten that part, but what was the use? She didn’t have any socks, did she?’
’Besides, wasn’t he a clean freak? How could he grab her feet with his bare hands!’
His hands were truly massive. Both of Cecelia’s feet fit into one of his palms with more than enough room to spare.
Even though he was only wearing a wool sweater, his hands were incredibly warm and dry.
She had to admit, being held like this felt really comfortable.
Acting on the human instinct to covet warmth, Cecelia didn’t pull away. She just looked into his eyes.
"But I don’t have any socks. Why are you so talkative today?"
Damien Vaughn didn’t answer her. "If you don’t have socks, why didn’t you tell me?"
Cecelia sat on his lap, her arms subconsciously hooking around his neck. The softness of her chest pressed against his, their mouths just inches apart.
Damien Vaughn gazed at her large, clear eyes, and his Adam’s apple bobbed unconsciously a few times.
"I’ll go borrow some for you."
Cecelia was speechless.
In a dizzying whirl, Damien Vaughn picked her up, stuffed her back under the covers, and strode out of the hospital room.
"Don’t move. Just sit here and wait."
Cecelia sat on the bed, staring at the door to her room.
In less than two minutes, he returned with a pair of slightly worn white socks and a pair of nurse’s shoes.
"I couldn’t borrow any clothes, but I managed to get a pair of shoes and socks. You can go out now."
Maybe it was because the clear weather lifted everyone’s spirits, or maybe it was the novel sensation of walking on solid ground after so long.
As Cecelia left the hospital room, she felt incredibly cheerful and couldn’t help but greet everyone she passed.
Everyone had heard she was sick and had been unconscious for the past two days, so they had all been quite worried.
Seeing her emerge now, lively and energetic, they all responded with smiles.
Laughter and cheerful voices followed her wherever she went.
It didn’t feel like they were recuperating and waiting for post-disaster reconstruction; it was more like being on vacation.
Following everyone’s directions, Cecelia found Grandma King.
Thanks to Cecelia, she had only caught a bit of a chill and had a feverish cold, but she was all better now.
Reuniting after surviving the disaster, the old woman was deeply moved. She held Cecelia’s hand and thanked her again and again.
Cecelia told her not to be so formal and to just ask if she needed any help. Grandma King then said shyly,
"In that case, I’ll just tell you. Luna, I missed lunch, and I’m a little hungry. Could you find me something to eat?"
Cecelia immediately turned and went to find a nurse.
But the nurse said they didn’t have any food.
There were many disaster victims being treated there while waiting for reconstruction. Normally, the hospital didn’t provide meals, but for the past few days, they had been offering free food at mealtimes. However, it was now an awkward time in between.
To be honest, Cecelia wanted to find something to eat too. Her stomach was already growling with hunger.
She borrowed a pen and paper from the nurse, jotted down everyone’s clothing sizes, and went back to find Damien Vaughn.
"The floodwaters outside haven’t completely receded. Can we really get out?"
Damien Vaughn had his ways. He looked at Cecelia as if she were an idiot.
"If we couldn’t, would I be wasting my breath talking to you?"
"Oh, right. Then let’s go. Let’s go right now, I’m starving."
Just a moment ago, watching her chat with everyone, looking so carefree, Damien had thought she was made of iron and didn’t get hungry.
The hallways and stairwells were crowded with people.
Whether it was because he was used to being protected or simply out of chivalry, Damien kept a protective arm loosely around Cecelia the entire way downstairs.
Parked downstairs was a commercial van that sat high above the water level. He first opened the front passenger door, picked Cecelia up, and tossed her inside. Then, he opened a rear door and climbed over the seats into the driver’s side.
His movements were practiced; this clearly wasn’t his first time.
Cecelia was suddenly struck with emotion again.
’Logically, everyone’s safety is now guaranteed. He could have gone straight back to Veridia. Why hasn’t he left yet?’
But the moment the words left her mouth, she once again struck one of Damien’s unknown nerves.
"I’ve seen ungrateful people, but I’ve never seen anyone more ungrateful than you. How about you get out of the van right now and wade back, and I’ll head back to Veridia first?"
’That’s not what I meant. Can’t we just make conversation?’
’Forget it. His temper is just too foul. I’d better just say less.’
Cecelia stopped talking to him and stared out at the disaster-stricken streets.
The van moved slowly. After an uncertain amount of time rocking back and forth, they arrived outside a large supermarket.
’Goes to show that businesspeople will make money no matter the situation.’
After experiencing such a major disaster, the supermarket was actually still open for business.
Damien Vaughn jumped out of the van first.
Cecelia pushed open the door beside her and looked at the water in the street. Just as she was hesitating, wondering if she should take off her shoes and socks before getting down, Damien barked at her.
"Climb over here. I’ll catch you. What are you spacing out for?"
’Oh, right. If I jump down like he did, I won’t get my shoes and socks wet.’
Cecelia scrambled over to the driver’s seat, braced herself for a moment, and then with a WHOOSH, leaped into Damien Vaughn’s arms. He caught her securely, spun around, and carried her into the supermarket.
The supermarket was quiet, with only a few employees on duty. Cecelia made a beeline for the clothing section.
Damien Vaughn didn’t follow her.
He’d never been interested in shopping, let alone buying clothes for a bunch of grown men.
Seeing that Cecelia was buying so much at once, a sales associate enthusiastically started helping her find each item.
Damien Vaughn strolled over to the snack aisle.
The shelves were a riot of color, packed full of all kinds of snacks.
He had never eaten snacks before, nor had he ever bought any. He had no idea what Cecelia liked, so he just looked around aimlessly.
When a sales associate saw him, they hurried over.
"Sir, are you looking for anything in particular? Is it for you or for family?"
Damien Vaughn glanced instinctively in Cecelia’s direction. "Family."
"For your girlfriend, right? Girls usually love these, these, these, and these..."
By the time Cecelia finished picking out the clothes and came over, Damien Vaughn had already bought the snacks and paid.
On the floor sat three huge shopping bags, stuffed to the brim.
Cecelia assumed he had bought some for everyone. After paying for her items, she helped carry the bags out.
But back in the van, just as she got settled, Damien Vaughn spoke in a faintly ominous tone.
"Those three bags are all yours. Weren’t you hungry? Start eating."
Cecelia froze. "What? All three of these huge bags are just for me?"
"No need to thank me. I’m letting you eat your fill."
Cecelia was speechless.
’I wasn’t about to thank you, okay?’
’Even if I was starving, there’s no way I could eat this much in one go.’
Damien Vaughn didn’t like her unappreciative attitude.
"If you can’t eat it all in one sitting, then eat it in two. What’s with that attitude? Was I wrong to buy you food?"
That wasn’t what Cecelia meant. She was just used to being frugal and simply felt it was a waste...
After speaking, Damien Vaughn shot her a warning look.
"If I say it’s all yours, then it’s all yours. Don’t you dare give any of it to anyone else, or you’ll have me to answer to."
Cecelia was speechless.
"Why? There’s so much. Why can’t I share some with others?"
She always asked such stupid questions. For a moment, Damien was stumped.
After two seconds of silence, he said indignantly,
"Because you performed meritorious service on this project. This is your reward. As for the others,"
"I, Damien Vaughn, have never had a habit of buying snacks for my male subordinates. I can’t set that precedent!"
