By the time Cecelia Archer got home, Candy was already asleep.
After her episode, Shane Grant had immediately called a doctor to the house. They had given her medication, and her condition had stabilized.
Shane Grant also had some good news for her.
"I’ve been in touch with the bone marrow bank, and they’re going to arrange a new match for Candy. Don’t worry. Candy will definitely get better within the year."
Cecelia Archer was deeply moved. Damien Vaughn had tried to help so many times before to no avail. It seemed Shane had been working hard on this behind the scenes.
"Thank you, Shane."
"Is there any need to thank me? Just wait for the good news."
Shane Grant looked at Cecelia Archer’s exhausted face, his heart aching for her.
"You’ve been working so hard lately, and the kids have been cooped up at home for a while. They’ve been nagging me every day about wanting to go to an amusement park. Once Candy’s feeling a bit better, let’s take them on a short trip. Otherwise, it’s not good for their development, physically or mentally."
Cecelia Archer understood.
Since she had gotten injured last year, Candy and Annie had been stuck at home for several months.
It wasn’t just "not good" for them; it was terrible.
"But you just had surgery..."
"But I have you, don’t I? Besides, I’ve been resting for so long now, it’s not a big deal. We won’t go too far. There’s a resort hotel in the suburbs with a nice environment. We can just go for a few days."
After his second uncle and aunt left, Damien Vaughn saw his grandfather trembling with rage. Instead of going straight to bed, he took the old man’s hand and began to massage it.
"I’m sorry I couldn’t make it back for the New Year. You’re not mad at me, are you?"
His grandfather closed his eyes, grunting only after several seconds had passed.
"You’re the head of the family now. Who would dare be mad at you?"
"I’m the head of the family? Alright, since even you admit it, then you should listen to me from now on."
He suppressed his own frustrations and playfully reached out to stroke his grandfather’s beard.
"You must be bored to death cooped up at home, right? I’ll take you out. We’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning."
He succeeded in making his grandfather laugh.
"You little brat, you even dare to tease me now?"
"How could I? I’m serious. Tell me, what were you thinking back then, having us live so close to Second Uncle and the others? Now, even after a little argument, we still have to see them all the time."
"And here I thought you were being so filial, offering to take me on a trip. Turns out you feel awkward too and just want to hide from them?"
Damien Vaughn replied, "Am I the type of person to get awkward? I’m just worried you’ll be caught in the middle. We’ll stay for a few days, and once the Vaughn Group reopens, I’ll go straight back to work. Out of sight, out of mind."
His grandfather sighed. "It’s all my fault. I was too career-focused when I was young and neglected my children’s upbringing. Your father, your second uncle, and your third uncle... the three of them combined aren’t worth one of you."
"Come on, Grandpa, be content. The Vaughn Group is already this powerful with just one grandson like me. If all three of them were like me, would we even let anyone else survive? We have to at least leave them a fighting chance."
Damien Vaughn’s words made his grandfather laugh out loud.
"Damien, the only reason I’m still holding on is you. *Sigh*..."
The next day, Cecelia Archer, Shane Grant, and their party arrived at Cloudmere Manor in the suburbs.
An hour later, Damien Vaughn and his grandfather also checked into Cloudmere Manor.
The children wanted to fish and catch shrimp, so Shane Grant booked a lake-view room.
His grandfather wanted to look at the mountains, read, and find some peace and quiet, so Damien Vaughn booked a mountain-view room.
The two groups, one on the east side and one on the west, went about their own activities. They somehow managed to stay for four days without once running into each other.
Four days later, at dusk on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, Candy and Annie had played so wildly that they had soaked through two sets of clothes in one afternoon. With no clean clothes left for them in the room, Cecelia Archer decided to get some from the car.
She hadn’t even reached the underground parking garage when she rounded a corner and entered a blind spot for the security cameras. Suddenly, someone grabbed her arm and yanked her into a dark corner.
An instant later, the cold blade of a dagger was pressed against her neck.
"Don’t talk. Do as I say if you want to live."
Cecelia Archer’s heart leaped. She tried to turn her head to see who was threatening her, but she had barely moved when her hair was viciously pulled.
"I said, listen to me if you want to live! Are you deaf? Don’t move! Or I’ll kill you right now!"
It all happened so suddenly, and her attacker was so ruthless, that Cecelia Archer froze in terror, not daring to move. Her mind raced, desperately trying to figure out a plan.
"Okay, okay, I won’t move. Who are you? What do you want? Just don’t kill me. We can talk about this, okay?"
"My boyfriend is rich. He’s right here at the resort. If you need money, we can give it to you. Any amount you want."
She was trying to probe his intentions, but he completely ignored her.
"Shut up! Don’t try to play any tricks on me! When the car gets here, you’re going to bend over and rush inside as fast as you can. Once we’re somewhere safe, we can talk! If you dare to fight me here, I’ll take you down with me in a heartbeat!"
After speaking, the man held the knife to her with one hand and took out his phone to make a call with the other.
"I got her. Come quick."
Cecelia Archer’s heart pounded violently as a thousand terrible scenarios flooded her mind.
’I don’t know who this is or what he wants. But I know it’s nothing good. I can’t just go with him.’
’I have children, a family. I have to save myself.’
Just as the man hung up, a pair of bright headlights appeared up ahead. A van was driving toward them.
Cecelia Archer’s scalp tingled with fear. Her eyes darted around. She had less than twenty seconds, at most. ’What do I do? What do I do?!’
Just as she was burning with anxiety, a tall figure appeared on the quiet, stone-paved path under a streetlamp ahead.
The figure was walking and smoking thoughtfully. Cecelia Archer focused her eyes. ’Isn’t that Damien Vaughn?’
’Am I so stressed that I’m starting to hallucinate?’
’How could I possibly see Damien Vaughn here, at this exact moment?’
’But whether it’s a hallucination or not, it’s better to try than to do nothing.’
Apparently, the man behind her also saw Damien Vaughn’s arrival.
In the split second before a hand clamped over her mouth, Cecelia Archer screamed.
"Damien Vaughn!"
Damien Vaughn whipped his head around, his eagle-like gaze piercing the shadows beside the path.
"Cecelia Archer?"
’I didn’t mishear that, did I? That was Cecelia Archer calling my name!’
’What’s she doing here? And what is she doing hiding in the shadows?’
Damien Vaughn immediately dropped his cigarette and strode toward the shadows.
The camera’s blind spot was small. Seeing Damien approaching, the kidnapper had nowhere left to hide. Survival was his top priority, so he had no choice but to let Cecelia Archer go.
The moment Damien Vaughn stepped into the shadows, a gleaming dagger lunged at his face.
Fortunately, his reflexes were quick. He leaned slightly to the side and dodged it.
The kidnapper missed and immediately changed direction, lunging again with a second stab.
Damien Vaughn was tall and agile. He grabbed the man’s arm from the side, squeezed his wrist hard, and with a CLANG, the dagger fell to the ground.
He pinned the man to the ground.
"Who are you? Who sent you? Why are you trying to harm me? Speak!"
