My Child and I Married a Billionaire

Chapter 301: Can’t Hold Her Enough

Soon, the Rh-negative blood arrived.

Candy was still unconscious. As the doctor prepared for the transfusion, Damien Vaughn stepped forward and picked her up.

"I’ll hold her for the transfusion."

"That’s not necessary, President Vaughn. She’s unconscious. It’s better if she lies down..."

"Don’t worry about it. I want to hold her."

At his insistence, Candy was nestled into his broad chest.

Damien Vaughn wasn’t sure if it was because the doctor said Candy might be his daughter, or simply because he hadn’t seen her in so long. Whatever the reason, his affection for her had reached an unprecedented level.

He couldn’t look at her enough, couldn’t touch her enough. Even now, holding her tightly, their body heat and breaths mingling, it still wasn’t enough.

Gazing at Candy’s beautiful sleeping face—her dark, thick eyelashes, her small, elegant nose, her lovely ruby-red lips—Damien’s fondness and heartache grew with every second. He couldn’t help but plant another kiss on her face.

Cecelia Archer watched from the side, a complicated feeling stirring in her heart.

Damien Vaughn’s arm still hadn’t fully healed, and the transfusion would take a while. Holding Candy like this would be exhausting for him.

And the way he looked at Candy was just...

"How is your grandfather?"

"He’s fine. Gwen Morgan is looking after him, so he’ll be okay."

Damien stared at Candy for another moment, then looked at Cecelia as if he had made up his mind.

"Cecelia, I want to talk to you."

He had never used such a serious, solemn tone to say he wanted to talk to her before. Cecelia didn’t know what he wanted to say and felt a strange sense of nervousness.

"What is it?"

"I want to be Candy’s father. Whether she’s my biological daughter or not, I want to treat her as my own. I want to marry you, and we can raise her together. Will you agree?"

Cecelia’s mind went blank. She thought she had misheard him.

"What?"

"Maybe you think this is very sudden, but I’ve wanted to say this for a long time."

Damien had never shown such a pleading, anxious expression before.

He was like a young man confessing to a girl for the first time, speaking with a difficult, almost awkward earnestness.

"I don’t even know what I was so arrogant about before, what I was so insistent on. I wanted to say these words to you countless times, but I could never get them out... Not until today. When I got the news about Candy, rushed to the rooftop, and realized I’d almost lost you both, I finally found the courage."

"Cecelia, I’m filled with regret and I’m terrified in hindsight. I can’t imagine if I had been even a little later today... I can’t bear the consequence of losing you. I really don’t want to lose you."

"I’ve liked you for a long time. I don’t even know when it started. Maybe it began the day I saw you again at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, or maybe it was some day after that. But no matter when it started, I can say for certain that I’ve fallen deeply in love with you."

"I’m not a promiscuous man, Cecelia. Growing up, the only women who have been close to me are Gwen Morgan, Claire Clark, and you. But I have never had romantic feelings for Gwen Morgan!"

"Maybe my mother’s and grandfather’s actions have made you doubt my relationship with Gwen, but I promise you, there’s nothing between us."

Cecelia was shocked and confused.

’That day they went out together, she had clearly seen the mark on Gwen’s neck... Could it be that Gwen had deliberately deceived her?’

’But how could she explain them being seen together afterward?’

Seeing her brows furrowed in a look of complete disbelief, Damien Vaughn anxiously stood up, still holding Candy.

He seemed so desperate now.

To win Cecelia’s trust, he was willing to do anything!

"If you don’t believe me, we can go confront Gwen Morgan right now! If our parents weren’t so close, I wouldn’t even have her as my only female friend!"

Cecelia said, "...Don’t get worked up. I didn’t say I don’t believe you. Be careful with Candy."

Damien looked down at the child, then forced himself to calm down and sit back down.

"As for Claire Clark,"

He continued to explain. Thinking of that absurd past, a ruthless glint flashed in Damien Vaughn’s eyes.

"Four years ago, I had just returned to the country to take over the Vaughn Group. I stepped on some people’s toes and was set up at the DL Group. That day, I was drugged. While I wasn’t in my right mind, I ruined a girl’s innocence. It was my first time, and hers too. I wanted to do everything I could to compensate her and I took that relationship very seriously. That’s why... I haven’t been in the mood to deal with her recently. Sooner or later, she will pay the price for her actions."

Cecelia’s mind went blank, her thoughts pulled back to four years ago.

’Club DL, delirious, ruined a girl’s innocence...’

"So you’re saying you’ve now discovered that girl wasn’t Claire Clark at all?"

"I don’t want to talk about her right now. For me, that’s a shameful memory."

Damien didn’t answer Cecelia’s question, changing the subject instead.

"I’m only asking you one thing right now, Cecelia. I love you, I want to be with you forever, and I want to protect you and Candy forever. Can you agree to that?"

Damien was right.

He had rehearsed these words in his heart countless times until they were second nature, but to Cecelia, they felt incredibly sudden.

He wanted to be with her forever, to protect her and Candy forever? Cecelia had dreamed of it before, had even felt her heart flutter for him, but what did she get in return? She had nearly fallen into hell.

’Can she dare to dream again? Will she just fall into hell once more? She didn’t have to think twice. It’s a certainty.’

Based on Old Mr. Vaughn’s attitude toward her on the rooftop just an hour ago, Cecelia knew it was impossible for them in this lifetime.

"President Vaughn, I’m very touched that you would say you want to protect Candy and treat her as your own daughter. But Candy and I are used to our life, just the two of us. Our statuses are worlds apart, and your family background wouldn’t allow..."

"What family background? I’ve been nothing but a pawn, emotionally blackmailed for thirty years! No one cares about my feelings. They threaten to disown me at the drop of a hat. I’d rather not have a family background like that!"

The moment Damien saw Cecelia was about to refuse, he couldn’t help but get agitated again.

"I’m being very serious, Cecelia! You just need to tell me you’re willing. You don’t have to worry about the rest. Since I’ve decided to be with you, I’ll do everything in my power to keep my promise!"

He spoke with great sincerity and conviction.

Cecelia believed that if he was telling the truth, he could provide a good life for her and Candy with his abilities, even if he left the Vaughn Family.

’But she couldn’t be that selfish.’

Damien Vaughn wasn’t just Damien Vaughn, or Old Mr. Vaughn’s grandson. He was the president of the Vaughn Group, the man responsible for the livelihoods of thousands upon thousands of employees.

She had lived with the Vaughn Family for a time and knew the character of his second and third uncles, as well as Carter Vaughn.

If the group were handed over to them, thousands upon thousands of employees and their families would be the ones to suffer.

"This is too sudden. I don’t know how to answer you. Besides, this isn’t the right place to discuss this. Let’s talk after you’ve calmed down."

With that, Cecelia couldn’t bear to look into Damien Vaughn’s eyes any longer. She turned to walk toward the balcony, but just then, Candy’s eyes suddenly fluttered open.

"Daddy, was everything you just said true?"
