The three of them spent the entire night in the old man’s hospital room.
After Candy fell asleep, she was moved to the companion bed. Cecelia Archer and Damien Vaughn sat side-by-side next to the old man, watching over his body and staring blankly all night long.
Early the next morning, Ryan called to ask Damien Vaughn about work. It was as if he’d been rebooted; his expression shifted back to one of calm composure.
"I have something to attend to today, so I won’t be coming into the office. Postpone all my work."
He then made a call to a certain high-ranking official he was acquainted with.
The official was shocked and saddened to learn of the old man’s passing. Following Damien Vaughn’s instructions, he immediately dispatched a private hearse.
The old man would not be buried for the time being; his body was discreetly transported to a funeral home.
After making the arrangements for his grandfather and leaving the funeral home, Damien Vaughn once again scooped Candy into his arms.
"Candy. Are you scared?"
Candy wrapped her arms around his neck and shook her head calmly.
"I’m not scared."
"Why not? Do you understand what’s happened?"
"I know, but I’m not telling. Daddy said I can’t tell anyone."
’How on earth did Cecelia Archer give birth to this little girl? She’s so smart it breaks your heart!’
With every word they exchanged, Damien Vaughn found himself loving her a little more.
"You’re amazing, Candy. That’s my girl. Did you sleep well last night? You haven’t eaten breakfast yet. Are you hungry? Do you want Daddy to treat you to something yummy?"
"Yes!"
What kid doesn’t love a tasty treat?
Candy’s face lit up, and she bounced excitedly in his arms.
"It’s been so long since I had breakfast with Daddy. I’ve wanted to eat with you for ages!"
"Daddy was wrong before. From now on, we’ll have breakfast together every day. What do you want to eat?"
Candy reeled off a long list of things Cecelia Archer normally forbade her from eating.
Damien Vaughn knew these foods weren’t healthy, but they had just been reunited after such a long time. He’d spoil her, just this once. He took her into a KFC.
Candy began to feast, her face a picture of pure bliss.
Damien Vaughn watched her, captivated, for another moment before gently placing her in Cecelia Archer’s arms.
"You two start eating, and wait for me here. Don’t leave until I get back, no matter what. I’m just stepping out for a minute."
With that, he took off, his long legs carrying him outside in a mad dash.
Candy watched his retreating figure through the glass window and gave Cecelia Archer a mysterious smile.
"He’s definitely gone to get you a surprise. Do you think he’s buying flowers or a diamond ring? Daddy isn’t going to propose to you, is he? Mommy, would you say yes?"
Cecelia Archer was rendered speechless by her daughter’s words.
"You haven’t seen the man in months, and the second you do, it’s ’Daddy this’ and ’Daddy that.’ How are you not the least bit shy?"
Candy looked at her as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "What’s there to be shy about? It’s not like I haven’t called him that before."
"Uncle Grant asked you to start calling him Daddy, too. Why won’t you call him that?"
At this, Candy herself couldn’t quite explain it.
Maybe it was because she had met Damien Vaughn first. First impressions really stuck with you.
Calling someone else ’Daddy’ just felt awkward and strange.
"I like calling him Daddy, and I like him. I like Uncle Grant too, but I just like him more. Still, you can’t say yes to his proposal right away. You have to make him chase you for a while. Mommy, I can tell Daddy really, really likes you. If you marry him, we’ll be very happy."
Cecelia Archer grabbed a french fry and stuffed it into her daughter’s mouth.
"You need to watch less of those silly cartoons. Even food can’t keep that little mouth of yours quiet."
Candy had indeed watched too many of those silly cartoons, and her imagination had gotten a little carried away.
Damien Vaughn hadn’t gone to buy flowers or a diamond ring. Instead, he had sped all the way to Shane Grant’s front door.
When the doorbell rang, the housekeeper answered it. She was surprised to see a tall young man standing there.
"May I ask who you are? Who are you looking for?"
"I’m looking for Shane Grant. Tell him my name is Damien Vaughn."
The housekeeper was used to working for the upper class. Having been in these circles for a long time, she had of course heard the name Damien Vaughn.
Not daring to delay, she immediately went to announce him.
Soon, Shane Grant appeared at the entrance, his face slightly pale as he leaned against the doorframe for support.
He didn’t invite Damien Vaughn inside.
"So early in the morning... what urgent business brings President Vaughn to grace my humble home with his presence?"
"Yes, it is urgent business."
Damien Vaughn was prepared. He woke his phone screen and held it out for Shane to see.
"I’m here to tell you some good news. I had a DNA test done with Candy. She’s my biological daughter."
From the moment the housekeeper had uttered his name, Shane Grant had imagined countless reasons for this visit, but he never would have dreamed it was this.
’Candy is his biological daughter? Didn’t Cecelia say she wasn’t? How is that possible?’
Seeing the shock and disbelief that quickly filled Shane Grant’s eyes, Damien Vaughn explained.
"It was a misunderstanding, one that even Cecelia Archer and I couldn’t quite explain, so it’s perfectly normal for you not to believe it. But now, the misunderstanding has been cleared up. I am, indeed, Candy’s biological father."
He pulled his phone back.
"Mr. Grant, I’m here to thank you. Thank you for taking such good care of her and Candy ever since you met them. And thank you for always being a gentleman in your treatment of them."
Shane Grant was at a loss for words.
’No wonder he’d always felt there was something odd about the way Damien Vaughn looked at Candy. And Candy’s reaction to him was unusual, too. Now that I think about it, their features are somewhat similar...’
Candy had suddenly found her biological father—a man who was younger and far more powerful than he was. Shane Grant’s emotions were in turmoil.
’Should I stop Cecelia from getting together with Damien Vaughn? It would feel like I was blocking her path down a wide road to happiness.’
’But if I don’t...’
"It’s not that simple, is it? Did you really come all this way just to inform me and offer your thanks?"
Shane Grant’s heart ached with bitterness; he couldn’t bring himself to offer Damien Vaughn his sincere best wishes. Fortunately, Damien understood.
Anyone who had poured his heart and soul into caring for a woman for so long would have a hard time suddenly letting her go.
"Of course. I didn’t come here just to thank you with words. I’m going to give you the international airport project. Mr. Grant, I hope we can be friends in the future."
"I’m taking Cecelia and Candy home, I’m going to marry Cecelia, and I need your most heartfelt blessing."
After rushing about, a light sheen of sweat on his temples, Damien Vaughn ran back into the KFC.
Seeing that he had been gone for so long and returned empty-handed, Cecelia Archer remained composed, but Candy looked a little disappointed.
"Daddy, where did you go? What took you so long?"
"Just had a few words with an old friend. Candy, are you full? If you’re not, I’ll order more for you."
"I’m full, I’m full! I’m not a little piggy."
Candy pouted, a little disappointed. ’He’s such a blockhead,’ she grumbled to herself.
Just as they were talking, Cecelia Archer’s phone rang.
She picked it up and saw it was Shane Grant calling.
’I was out all night and didn’t even send him a message,’ she thought. ’He must be worried.’
Cecelia Archer started to move aside to take the call, but Damien Vaughn reached out a long arm and stopped her.
"Is that Shane Grant? It’s okay. You can take the call right here."
