"He said it’s for cancer."

’Cancer?’

The hand Brandon Jacobs was holding his phone with trembled.

’It can’t be.’

’Elsa seems so normal, so beautiful. She’s a doctor herself—how could she possibly have cancer? He must have it wrong!’

"Does that friend of yours even know how to talk? Just forget I ever asked!"

Even though Brandon Jacobs had chewed him out, a seed of doubt had been planted in his mind.

After hanging up on his friend, the more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. He couldn’t resist sending the photo to Damien Vaughn.

"Vaughn, do me a favor and show this picture to the professor. Ask him to see what this medicine is and what it’s used for."

The professor had just finished surgery and was chatting with Damien Vaughn in a hospital room. Damien casually showed him the photo.

The professor’s expression grew solemn. "Who sent this to you? The person who sent it doesn’t recognize this medicine?"

"What’s wrong? Is there a problem with this medicine?"

"Er, it’s nothing. It’s just that there’s no name written on it, so I can’t be certain at the moment."

Although the professor didn’t say so directly, Damien Vaughn could clearly sense his evasiveness.

After seeing the professor out, he called Brandon Jacobs.

"Where are you? I told you to keep a close eye on her so nothing would happen, didn’t I? Why are you researching medicine all of a sudden? Brandon Jacobs, don’t cause trouble for me!"

Brandon Jacobs felt like he was going to die of anger from dealing with those two siblings.

’One after another, why is everyone so hostile toward me?’

"Why don’t you video call me and see for yourself before you say another word, man? Your sister was at a bar drinking for hours, and I just dragged her home. You’re yelling at me, she’s yelling at me... Did I owe you two in a past life or something?"

"You’re with her? Then why are you asking me about the medicine?"

Brandon Jacobs almost blurted out that Elsa was the one taking it.

’But, with Elsa’s foul temper, if she doesn’t want anyone else to know...’

"She hit it off with some guy at the bar and almost left with him. I saw him taking this medicine and was afraid he had some kind of hidden disease, so I stopped her. What in the world is this medicine for? Did you ask?"

So that’s what happened. Damien Vaughn breathed a sigh of relief.

"In any case, it’s not for anything good; the professor wouldn’t say directly. Just watch her closely. Don’t let her go to the bar again. If she absolutely refuses to listen, call me."

When Brandon Jacobs heard him say it wasn’t for "anything good," his heart plummeted.

After he hung up, Elsa walked out wrapped in a bath towel.

He had seen her figure many times, but this was the first time he’d seen her under the bright lights with her hair pinned up, her slender shoulders bare.

Because she was so slender, her collarbones protruded. She was practically skin and bones. Her neck looked so long, and even the bones in her elbows were clearly visible...

Brandon Jacobs hadn’t wanted to associate her with cancer, but...

Seeing her return to the room and lie down on the bed, still wearing her shower cap, Brandon Jacobs went to the bathroom, unplugged the hair dryer, and followed her.

"Get up. Dry your hair before you go to sleep."

Western habits aren’t as particular as oriental ones. Going barefoot, drinking cold water, and sleeping with wet hair are all perfectly normal, so Elsa completely ignored him.

Brandon Jacobs couldn’t stand to see her abuse her body like that. He pulled her to the side of the bed so her head was hanging over the edge, undid her shower cap, and knelt beside her to start drying her hair.

He even lectured her as he did it.

"I don’t know what they teach in Western medical textbooks, but in the orient, this is common knowledge for everyone, not just doctors. Sleeping with wet hair gives you headaches. And you should always wear slippers, no matter the season, or a chill can enter your body through your feet and cause a lot of harm. Elsa, you’re so young. You still have so many places to go and so many things to see. You should take better care of yourself."

Perhaps it was because the way he massaged her scalp as he dried her hair was too comfortable, or perhaps because she was simply tired, but Elsa didn’t argue with Brandon Jacobs.

Once her hair was dry, he helped her lie back down properly. Then, Brandon Jacobs took a quick shower and got into bed as well.

They were close enough to touch, yet a galaxy seemed to lie between them.

Elsa didn’t touch him or speak to him. She clearly wasn’t asleep, but she kept her eyes shut, pretending.

As Brandon Jacobs studied her beautiful, delicate face in the faint light filtering through the window, he suddenly began to understand her.

’She grew up without a mother or father, with a rotating cast of nannies for company. She’s never known what it feels like to be loved, so how could she possibly know how to love someone else?’

’She finally grows up and graduates, only to get cancer. If she isn’t cynical about the world, who would be?’

The more he looked at her, the more his heart ached, and the more he wanted to cherish her. Brandon Jacobs hadn’t intended to touch her, but he couldn’t control the overwhelming tide of affection and moved closer.

The moment his chest pressed against her back, Elsa’s eyes shot open, cold as ice.

"What are you doing?"

"I want to hold you."

"Don’t. Other than... *that*... I never lie in bed with a man, much less in his arms. You’re already close enough."

’Then *that* it is!’

Brandon Jacobs yanked her toward him.

It all started too suddenly, too impulsively. It was almost over before Brandon Jacobs remembered he hadn’t used a condom.

His mind went BLANK. He was terrified that Elsa would flip out when she realized it tomorrow. He tried to pull away, but Elsa’s arms were locked tightly around his neck, and he couldn’t move.

He tried to reason with her, but the moment she cried out, her mouth was covered by his.

In short, they were completely lost in each other.

The two of them barely slept all night, only passing out from exhaustion as the sky began to show the pale light of dawn.

They slept all the way into the afternoon.

Damien Vaughn, bless his heart, hadn’t sent a single text or made a single call.

When he woke up and checked the time, it was already 4:00 p.m.

The woman he loved was right beside him, sleeping so gently and peacefully. Brandon Jacobs’s heart felt wonderfully soft and content. He wished time could stop at this very moment and couldn’t resist placing a soft kiss on her cheek.

Even so, the light touch was enough to wake her.

"You’re awake? Did you sleep well?"

No matter how happy she might have been in the moment, Elsa always turned cold in a heartbeat.

She ignored him, shot him a cold look, motioned for him to move aside, and sat up on her own.

"What time is it?"

"Four in the afternoon."

She showed no surprise or annoyance, calmly ordering Brandon Jacobs to hand her the bath towel before getting out of bed.

Brandon Jacobs followed behind, his eyes fixed on the purple and blue marks on her arms and legs from their passionate night. He wanted to ask if she needed to take anything, or if there were any other... after-care measures to take. After all, several times last night, they hadn’t...

But Elsa seemed completely unconcerned about it, or perhaps, had no memory of it at all.

She took another shower, came out, took her usual pill, and prepared to leave for the hospital.

Suddenly, Brandon Jacobs didn’t want to remind her.

’She’s so terrible at taking care of herself. She has no regard for her own body at all.’

’For someone like her, getting pregnant would probably be next to impossible.’

’And even if she did get pregnant, for him, that would be a good thing.’

’Even if Elsa refused to marry him, having a child that belonged to them both would be wonderful.’

’God, he was startled by his own thought.’

’Have I really sunk this low? I’d be happy just to have a child with her, even if she won’t give me any official status?’

"Brandon Jacobs, have all the women in Veridia gone extinct? Have you really stooped this low?"

He could almost hear Wyatt Wynn’s derisive laughter.

’But what did it matter? He was discovering that as long as it involved Elsa, he was willing to do anything.’
