My Child and I Married a Billionaire

Chapter 332: Leaving Without Saying Goodbye

Brandon Jacobs was so infatuated with Elsa. Lying there with her, he couldn’t resist wanting to make a move.

Elsa had never refused him before, but this time, she didn’t let him have his way.

"I want some water. Go get me a glass."

Brandon Jacobs, afraid of letting her go thirsty, hurried out.

He hadn’t been back in days, so there was no hot water. The weather was so cold, and he couldn’t bear to let her drink cold water, so he waited in the kitchen for it to boil.

The moment he left, Elsa clutched her stomach in pain.

She lay on the bed for a long while before finally getting up to find her medicine, swallowing several pills at once.

A moment later, Brandon Jacobs returned with a cup of hot water.

As he watched, Elsa finished the water sip by sip, then suddenly spoke.

"You should go home."

They had just been having such a pleasant chat; he’d thought Elsa would let him stay the night.

Elsa gave him a rare, gentle smile and squeezed his cheek.

"My mother isn’t well. I have to go up and stay with her. Hurry and go now."

Brandon Jacobs actually wouldn’t have minded staying with her next to Mrs. Vaughn’s room to keep her company.

The house was so big and empty; it must be incredibly boring for her to be here all alone.

But Mrs. Vaughn was a mother, after all. It wouldn’t be right for her to see him lying in bed with her daughter.

"All right, then. I’ll go. Can I come see you again tomorrow night? We don’t have to do anything. I just want to see you."

"Okay," Elsa agreed gently.

Brandon Jacobs practically skipped all the way out.

He knew Elsa was treating him differently now. He knew he would win her over sooner or later. They would be together eventually.

As soon as Brandon Jacobs left, Elsa downloaded a translation app on her phone, grabbed her wallet, and left the villa as well.

She had just reached the roadside when a taxi pulled up. "Hey, pretty lady. Need a ride? Where to?"

Elsa got in, spoke a few sentences in English, and handed him her phone to read.

The taxi driver read the translation. "You’re looking for a desert? We don’t have one here in Veridia. That’s a long way off."

"How far?"

"Over 1,000 kilometers."

"Do you know where to find one?"

"I do. Besides Xincheng, there’s Ganton. But Xincheng is too far. Ganton has gotten pretty popular these past two years. A lot of young people go there. I’d suggest you go there."

"Take me there. I’ll pay your fare."

The driver was taken aback.

’This is the first time I’ve ever had a fare for such a long distance.’

"It’s over a thousand kilometers! The tolls alone will be over a thousand yuan, plus gas, plus my hourly rate... you’d better think this through!"

"Is ten thousand yuan enough?"

Elsa pulled out a thick stack of cash and tossed it onto the passenger seat. "Let’s go."

Once the car was on the highway, she finally sent a message to Damien Vaughn.

"You should go see your mother. I’m leaving. Don’t book a ticket for me; I’ll buy my own."

In his office, Damien Vaughn was trying to placate a fuming Cecelia Archer.

"I’m completely devoted to you, I’ve never even considered anyone else. Please, believe me, okay? If you don’t believe me, check my phone. If you can find a single thing out of line, I’ll have nothing more to say!"

He unlocked his phone and held it out to Cecelia Archer.

Cecelia Archer had no interest in looking, but he insisted on shoving the phone into her hands.

"You can look through whatever you want, I’m not just saying that because I’m angry... Cecelia, Candy is still waiting for me to pick her up. We’ve worked so hard to get to where we are today. Can we please not fight?"

"Who’s fighting with you?"

Cecelia Archer subconsciously glanced at his phone screen. Just as she was about to say something, a new message notification popped up.

Sender—Elsa.

Elsa? That was clearly a woman’s name. The reveal was like a loud, sharp slap to Damien Vaughn’s face.

"So this is what you meant by ’look at whatever I want’?"

"I..."

Damien Vaughn was at a loss for words.

Thinking that Elsa would never contact him unless it was important, he pulled his phone back.

"It’s really not what you think. If you promise not to divorce me, not to fight with me, I’ll explain everything properly."

As he spoke, he opened the message.

When he saw that Elsa had left, his pupils contracted sharply.

’How could she just leave like that? Didn’t we agree she’d look after Mom for a few more days?’

He hadn’t had time to find a reliable doctor yet, hadn’t had time to book her ticket... ’What is she doing...?’

’Could Brandon Jacobs have said something to make her angry?’

Damien Vaughn was in no mood to go deal with his mother’s situation now. Elsa’s sudden departure had caught him completely off guard, and he furiously called Brandon Jacobs.

"What did you do? Did you upset her again? Why did she just up and leave? Go get her back, now!"

Brandon Jacobs was completely baffled.

"Did you dial the wrong number? Are you talking to me? What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking to you! Where are you right now?"

"I just got back from her place. Why are you yelling at me? What happened?"

"What do you think happened! What did you say to her? How did you piss her off this time? She sent me a message saying she left!"

"What?"

Brandon Jacobs’s reaction was a hundred times stronger; he nearly jumped out of his skin on the other end of the line.

"Left? Where did she go?"

"How should I know? She probably hasn’t been gone for long. Go! Get in your car and chase after her!"

Without needing to be told twice, Brandon Jacobs immediately hung up and rushed out to find her.

Damien Vaughn turned back to look at Cecelia Archer, who was now smiling even more scornfully.

"Why make someone else chase her? Why don’t you go? Someone else probably can’t get her back; you should go yourself. Don’t worry. I’m not one to cling to a position I’m not wanted in. You don’t have to be torn between us. Go on and tell her. I’m stepping aside for her right now."

"It’s not what you think. Cecelia..."

Whatever it was, Cecelia Archer no longer cared.

She grabbed her phone, walked around the other side of the desk, and headed for the door.

Damien Vaughn hurried after her to the doorway. He was about to call her back when he saw the Director of Finance and the VP of Sales standing just outside.

They had probably heard the argument, as they both looked awkward and unsure of what to do.

"President Vaughn..."

"Is there something you need?"

"A document was submitted two days ago, but President Linden hasn’t approved it for us yet. We need it urgently today..."

No matter how much they fought, work was not something to be trifled with. So many employees were watching.

Damien Vaughn turned and went back into the office.

He quickly reviewed and signed the first document, then handed it directly to the VP of Sales.

Cecelia had already reviewed more than half of the second document.

Damien Vaughn quickly went over the rest of it, signed it, and handed it to the Director of Finance.

Just as he was about to chase after Cecelia Archer again, Brandon Jacobs called.

"She’s not here! When did she send you that message? I drove the whole way, looked carefully twice, and there’s no sign of her!"

Damien Vaughn put his head in his hand. He pulled out his phone and checked; more than forty minutes had already passed.

"She must have taken a taxi, but she shouldn’t have gotten that far. How about this: you go to the airport, I’ll go to the high-speed rail station. We should still be able to intercept her."

The two of them split up. After more than an hour of frantic searching, they called each other again.

"Nothing. I’ve searched the entire departure hall. Not a trace of her. Is it possible she bought a ticket in advance and timed her arrival perfectly to leave right away?"

"How should I know? Check the flight information!"
