Kai stood alone in the street, Tiamat’s crimson particles long since faded into nothing. For several seconds he didn’t move, her final word still echoing somewhere in his mind.

Yes.

Then the System finally responded, not with one notification, but several at once.

[First Disaster successfully overcome.]

[Disaster Objective Completed.]

[Civilization Survival Condition: Satisfied.]

Kai’s eyes widened. Then the most familiar notification of all appeared beneath the others.

[Level Up.]

[Player: Kai Rosefield.]

[Level: 70.]

Kai stared at the notification a little longer.

Seventy.

Not long ago, Level 50 had felt impossibly high. Then 60. Then 70.

Each time he’d reached one, the world had immediately given him something bigger to fear.

This time was different.

He had reached Level 70 by surviving the First Disaster itself.

Kai closed his hand slowly. "...I’m really getting stronger."

And to think he reached after surviving the First Filter. Before he could fully process this further, several objects fell out of the air around him.

CLANG!

CLANG!

THUD!

He looked down. Weapons, armor, and a handful of strange items scattered across the destroyed street, not appearing neatly in his inventory the way rewards usually did.

Kai raised an eyebrow. "...That’s new."

The objects began glowing, then shot toward him all at once.

WHOOSH!

He raised a hand instinctively, and everything froze in the air a foot from his palm.

[Stormforged Spear: S–Grade]

[It pulsed faintly, a weapon forged from condensed storm mana, capable of channeling wind and lightning through a single strike.]

[Tidal Edge: S–Grade]

[It hummed beside it, a blade able to manipulate compressed water into cutting force.]

[Tempest Sovereign Armor: S–Grade]

It settled last, dramatically stronger than anything he currently wore. He saw it gave two hundred bonus stats in his defense and agility while also giving him mana resistance, wind-assisted movement, water and lightning resistance all bundled into one set.

Kai looked at the three items. "...These are all absurd."

Kai inspected the armor again, running his fingers across the surface. Even without equipping it, he could feel the mana moving through it. "This is better than my current armor by that much?"

Tiamat’s voice answered from inside his mind. "You survived a Disaster. Did you expect ordinary rewards?"

Kai glanced sideways despite knowing she wasn’t physically there. "I knew they wouldn’t be ordinary as my Distortion makes it give the best... But it basically makes me two times stronger than anyone in the city."

"It’s only to be expected, you pass something that was almost impossible."

Kai stared at the armor for another second. "...Fair."

Another notification followed, and his expression shifted.

[Authority Acquired.]

[Water Authority.]

[Identification Failed.]

Then a second.

[Storm Authority.]

[Identification Failed.]

Kai’s brows furrowed. "...Failed?"

The System had identified everything he’d ever encountered before this. Skills, classes, weapons, relics. Even Tiamat’s level had only shown up as ???, but that was different from an outright failure.

Now it couldn’t even categorize the Authorities properly.

A different notification appeared then, not the System’s familiar blue.

Purple.

Kai’s eyes widened.

[This isn’t the System.]

[It’s me.]

He froze as he realized it was Tiamat.

[Those are pieces of my Authority.]

Kai looked at the two notifications again. Water. Storm.

He asked, mentally, "...How much of your power did I actually receive?"

"Very little," came the reply.

Kai stared. "...Very little?"

She confirmed it. What he’d received were only fragments, not her complete Authorities, because his current body wasn’t capable of handling all of it at once.

"You cannot carry an ocean simply because I give you water," she said. "As you grow stronger, more will become available."

Kai looked down at his own hands. "So this is something I can develop."

"Exactly."

He noticed something else a moment later. The Authority wasn’t only passive. Two actual powers had come with it.

[Tidal Dominion] let him manipulate existing water and condense it into weapons, waves, shields, or high-pressure attacks.

[Stormcall] let him generate and control wind and lightning together, creating localized storms at will.

A passive followed both. [Storm and Tide Suppression — Passive] Water and wind-based abilities weaker than his current Authority level would be automatically weakened or suppressed in his presence.

Kai paused. "...That’s useful."

"It will become much more useful later," Tiamat said.

"How much later?"

Silence.

Kai sighed. "...Right. You like doing that."

...

A recently awakened B-Rank hunter stood a few streets away, exhausted and bloodied, still gripping his weapon loosely. He looked toward the spot where Tiamat had vanished. Nothing happened for several seconds.

And then he slowly looked around.

The crimson sky was finally disappearing.

The oppressive pressure that had covered Mythal for hours was gone.

No dragons remained overhead.

No waves of monsters were charging through the streets.

The relay network still glowed beneath the roads, but now its light was steady and calm.

For the first time since the Gate had appeared, Mythal was simply quiet.

Then it hit him. "...She’s actually gone."

Someone beside him whispered, "We survived."

Another hunter looked down at his own hands and saw they were shaking. He hadn’t even noticed until then. His weapon slipped slightly from his fingers. "...I thought I was going to die."

His companion laughed weakly. "So did I."

They looked at each other.

Then both started laughing.

Down from them a female hunter looked around at the destroyed streets, the glowing relay network still humming faintly, the exhausted hunters scattered across the block. Then she started laughing, not because anything was funny, but because the tension holding her together for the past hour finally snapped.

"WE SURVIVED!"

That became the spark.

One hunter heard her.

Then another.

Then ten.

Then dozens.

Weapons rose into the air across the block. People shouted. Some hunters dropped to their knees. Others grabbed the nearest teammate and just held on.

Someone screamed, "MYTHAL SURVIVED!"

Another voice picked it up. "THE FIRST DISASTER IS OVER!"

A third, further down the block. "WE BEAT IT!"

The sound spread through the city like an avalanche gathering speed.

...

Raze stood among the exhausted hunters nearby, looking around slowly before he started laughing outright.

"HAHAHAHAHA!"

He threw his greatsword over one shoulder. "We actually survived that monster!"

A nearby hunter shouted, "Raze! You almost died!"

Raze grinned. "Almost doesn’t count!"

Another laughed. "You got thrown through three buildings!"

"Four."

Everyone turned to look at him.

Raze grinned wider. "...I counted."

...

Sera lowered her shield slowly, arms trembling from exertion. She looked up at the sky, watching the crimson clouds thin and finally break apart, blue returning overhead for the first time in what felt like days.

She smiled, quiet. "...It’s over."

A hunter nearby asked, "Are you crying?"

She wiped her face immediately. "No."

"You definitely are."

"...Dust."

"There isn’t any dust."

Sera turned toward him fully. "Do you want to fight me right now?"

The hunter backed away fast. "Congratulations, you’re still terrifying."

Sera laughed, small and genuine.

...

Mayor Ko stood in the middle of the ruined street, weeks of preparation finally catching up with him all at once. Evacuation planning. Relic deployment. Emergency contingencies. Communication networks. Hunter positioning down to the district.

He’d expected relief.

Instead he simply looked at Mythal. Damaged, scarred in places, but still standing. The people were alive. The hunters around him were celebrating in real time.

He closed his eyes. "...We did it."

A nearby hunter overheard him. "Mayor!"

Ko turned.

The hunter smiled. "Tell us."

"Tell you what?"

The hunter raised a fist. "That Mythal survived."

Mayor Ko looked out at the people gathering around him, then raised his own hand.

"Yes."

His voice carried further this time, loud enough to reach the whole block.

"Mythal survived!"

The street erupted.

One district picked it up first. Then another joined in, cheering spreading outward in waves. Then another, and another, until the sound rolled across the entire city at once, hunters in every direction throwing weapons skyward, embracing strangers, laughing and crying in equal measure.

Across Mythal, the celebration had only just begun.
