My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 318: Golden Rain (Part 1)Thousands of golden swords hung motionless above Mythal, and for a long moment nothing happened at all.
Then the sword closest to Kai brightened.
"Kai," Tiamat said.
He didn’t need her to finish. "Everyone move!"
The sword vanished from the sky.
BOOOOOOM!
It crashed into the street, debris exploding outward, and the shockwave launched Kai clean off his feet. He twisted in midair, catching himself with a snap of Air Step, landing hard against the side of a building. Below him sat a crater exactly where he’d been standing a heartbeat earlier.
His expression hardened. "...That was aimed at me."
"Kai!" Sera shouted from below.
Another sword began glowing overhead. He was already moving before it fell.
He ran, and another blade dropped behind him.
BOOM!
It missed. Another followed.
BOOM!
Another.
BOOM!
He cut left, and the next sword’s trajectory bent to follow. He climbed onto a rooftop, and it adjusted mid-fall to track him there too.
His eyes narrowed. "They’re tracking me."
"The trajectory is changing," Lily said over the network.
"They’re adjusting in midair," Elden confirmed.
"They’re targeting the City Leader," Gabriel said quietly.
"Yeah," Kai said, jumping clear of another impact. "And apparently they take that rule seriously."
"Protect Kai!" Mira ordered, and several hunters rushed toward him, forming a defensive line with shields raised as a golden sword descended.
BOOOOOOM!
The impact scattered them, one rolling across the street, another losing his shield entirely. Kai landed nearby, already shouting. "Don’t!"
"We’re trying to help!" Mira snapped back.
He pointed upward at the next sword forming. "They’re not targeting you!" It fell. He moved. BOOM! "They’re targeting me!"
The realization spread through the team fast.
He deliberately cut toward the city’s edge, and the swords followed. He turned back, and they turned with him. He stopped dead. The swords halted in place above him, one aimed directly at his chest.
He smiled faintly. "Interesting."
"What did you learn?" Tiamat asked.
"They don’t attack until they’re positioned." He stepped sideways, and the sword adjusted. "But they aren’t predicting my movements."
"Continue."
He grinned. "You really like making me figure things out."
"You’re more observant when I don’t answer."
"...Annoying."
Lily’s voice cut in, steady despite the chaos. "I’m recording every weapon."
"Can we identify their properties?" Elden asked.
"Not yet. But we can identify their behavior."
"Record how they appear too," Kai called back.
"Already doing it," she said.
Sera fell in beside him, matching his pace. "You okay?"
"Fine."
Another sword dropped. He shifted, she followed, and the street behind them exploded.
BOOM!
She glanced at the crater. "That’s your definition of fine?"
"Mostly."
Another sword appeared, and she raised her weapon on instinct. He caught her arm. "Don’t block."
"Why?"
"You’ll get thrown away."
"Then I’ll dodge," she said.
"That’s better."
They kept running together, and then all at once every sword in the sky vanished.
Kai stopped cold. "...What?"
The sky sat empty for a heartbeat. Then a long golden shape began forming, thinner and sharper than the swords.
A spear.
"That’s new," he said.
More appeared behind it, multiplying fast.
"They’re changing," Tiamat confirmed.
"Why?"
"You survived the swords."
He watched the growing cluster of lances. "So they’re trying something else."
The first one dropped.
SHING!
He moved, and it drove straight through the ground.
BOOM!
Another followed, and he jumped clear. A third changed course mid-fall, and he twisted just in time, the lance still catching the edge of his coat, tearing a shallow line across the fabric.
"...They’re faster."
"And more precise," Tiamat said.
"They’re learning."
Elden activated a defensive array from the ground, several automated projectiles launching skyward to intercept one of the falling lances.
BOOM!
It shattered mid-flight, and for a moment it looked like they’d found an answer.
Then five more lances formed to replace it.
Lily’s face fell. "They’re increasing the number."
"Then increase our output," Elden said.
"We can’t keep up."
"Fall back!" Mira shouted at Kai.
"No," he said, still moving. "We’re learning too."
He deliberately drifted into an open stretch of street, waiting for a lance to form overhead, holding still until the last possible instant before breaking sideways. It adjusted. He changed direction again, and it adjusted again. He stopped dead, and it shifted to compensate. He jumped, and it followed.
He smiled. "They don’t just track my position." He watched it hang above him. "They’re responding to my movement."
"Exactly."
"Then the best way to survive is to keep changing my rhythm."
He broke pattern immediately, and the next lance missed clean.
The lances vanished all at once. He slowed, breathing hard. "What now?"
The sky darkened overhead, and something massive began forming.
A hammer.
"...A hammer," he said flatly.
"That’s bigger than you," Sera said, staring up at it.
"Thanks for pointing that out."
It fell.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
The entire building beneath him collapsed, and he dropped with it, catching himself mid-fall with Air Step, reappearing on the next rooftop over.
"Okay." He looked up warily. "Heavy weapons."
More hammers formed, and this time they didn’t aim for him directly. They smashed the buildings around him instead, one after another.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
"They’re removing my cover," he realized.
"They’re destroying his escape routes," Lily said, alarmed.
"The disaster is adapting to the environment," Elden added.
"It’s forcing him into open space," Gabriel finished.
"Exactly," Kai said. "And I don’t like where this is going."
He activated Air Run, feet striking solid nothing as he ran straight across open sky, the hammers smashing through empty buildings beneath him. He glanced back. They adjusted, following him upward.
"...Still following."
"You’re making the correct choice," Tiamat said.
"Don’t sound so surprised."
"You usually make things more complicated."
He laughed despite the exhaustion pulling at his chest. "That’s fair."
The hammers vanished, replaced by axes. Then spears. Then blades. Then chains. Then golden bows. Then golden shields. Weapon after weapon, each one different from the last.
His expression sharpened. "It’s not random."
"No," Tiamat confirmed.
He watched the pattern unfold. Close-range. Long-range. Area damage. Anti-cover. Anti-mobility. Every gap he’d found so far, closed one at a time.
"It’s building an arsenal."
"We’ve recorded at least twelve weapon types," Lily reported.
"And they’re appearing based on Kai’s actions," Elden said.
"So every time he finds a way around one—" Mira started.
"—another weapon appears," Lily finished.
"It’s adapting," Gabriel said quietly.
Mira’s jaw tightened. "Then we need to find out what happens when it runs out of answers."
"Let’s hope it has a limit," Kai said, still running.
A lance appeared, and he dodged. Another formed behind him, and he twisted clear. A third came from the side, and he ducked beneath it.
A fourth formed directly above, and he didn’t see it in time.
SLASH!
It grazed his side, blood spraying across the frozen road as he hit the ground hard.
"Kai!" Sera’s voice cracked over the network.
He touched the wound, fingers coming away red. "...I’m fine."
"No," Tiamat said immediately.
"I’m fine enough."
"Be more careful."
He climbed to his feet, looking upward. "They’re getting faster."
"Yes."
Everything vanished again. Complete silence.
He stopped, wary. "...Again?"
A small golden shape formed in the sky, unfamiliar at first. Then recognition hit.
"...A gun."
Another appeared. Then another. Then ten. Then fifty. Then hundreds, the entire sky filling with golden barrels.
Lily stared at the readout. "That’s..."
"A lot of weapons," Elden said.
"Those aren’t in the records," Mira said.
Gabriel’s expression tightened. "No."
Kai gripped his sword. "Of course they aren’t."
One gun swiveled toward him.
Click.
His eyes narrowed. BANG! A golden bullet tore through the air, and he dodged just clear of it.
Then—
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Hundreds fired at once, the sky filling with streaking gold. He ran, weaving through the barrage, Air Step, Air Run, a wall-jump off a leaning tower, a roll across broken stone, his sword flashing to deflect what he couldn’t outrun.
CLANG!
One bullet.
CLANG!
Another. Then too many to track individually. He changed direction mid-stride, and a bullet grazed his arm. Another tore straight through his coat. A third scratched a shallow line across his cheek, blood beading along the cut.
He gritted his teeth. "...Too many."
"Don’t try to block everything," Tiamat warned.
"I know!"
He kept moving.
"Deploy the barrier!" Mira ordered, and several hunters activated whatever defenses they had left, a massive shield rising to catch the incoming fire.
BOOOOOOM!
The barrier shook violently under the impact, cracks spreading fast.
CRACK.
Another volley slammed into it.
CRACK!
"Hold!" Mira shouted, and then the whole thing gave way, throwing the hunters behind it backward across the street.
Kai turned sharply. "Fall back!"
Mira climbed to her feet. "We’re fine!"
"No, you’re not!"
Another barrage began forming overhead, and the hunters retreated, dragging the wounded with them.
Kai noticed something as he ran, the guns weren’t all firing together. They were layered, some forcing him left, others sealing off the right, more covering the airspace directly overhead.
"They’re herding me."
"Yes," Tiamat said.
"Toward something."
"Probably."
He sighed. "You really aren’t going to tell me."
"You already know the answer."
He smiled despite everything. "Fair."
His body started moving before his mind caught up, shoulders shifting on their own, his head turning a half-second ahead of danger, his footing adjusting toward gaps he hadn’t consciously spotted. Distortion, working overtime.
But the gaps kept shrinking.
He realized it clearly. "Even Distortion can’t make an impossible path."
"Not every outcome is perfect," Tiamat said.
He nodded, jaw set. "Then I’ll make the path myself."
He changed direction hard, racing through the ruined city, leaping building to building while golden bullets tore straight through the walls around him.
BANG! BOOM!
A hammer he hadn’t even seen destroyed a rooftop just behind his heel. He climbed into Air Run, and golden lances gave chase overhead, forcing another sharp turn. A sword cut across his path, and he dropped low beneath it. A bullet caught his shoulder in the same instant, and he gritted his teeth and kept moving anyway.
Below, Sera clenched her weapon, watching his path bend eastward. "He’s getting pushed toward the eastern district."
Lily checked the map fast. "There are still intact buildings there."
"Can we guide him?" Mira asked.
"Not with this many weapons," Elden said grimly.
Kai looked up mid-run, and the sky no longer showed scattered individual weapons. They’d started forming patterns, swords shielding the guns, lances plugging gaps, hammers clearing obstacles from his escape routes, guns suppressing every open lane he tried to take.
He understood all at once. "It’s building an armor."
"Yes," Tiamat said.
"An armor made of weapons."
"And you’re the target inside it."
He laughed once, breathless. "That’s one way to put it."
He jumped, and a bullet caught his side. Not deep. Enough. He landed badly, rolled, pressed a hand against the fresh wound.
"...Damn."
"Kai!" Sera’s voice, sharp with panic.
"I’m okay."
"You’re bleeding."
"I noticed."
He forced himself upright as another barrage formed overhead and broke into a run again.
"You need shelter," Tiamat said.
"I know."
He spotted it ahead, one building still standing whole among the wreckage, everything around it already reduced to rubble.
"There."
He sprinted for it, bullets chasing his heels the whole way, and dove through the nearest window.
CRASH!
He hit the floor and rolled to a stop against the far wall as the building shook around him.
BOOM!
Another impact rattled the frame, and then, for the first time since the disaster had begun, silence.
He pressed himself against the wall, breathing hard, blood soaking through his shirt in two places.
"...Finally."
He closed his eyes for half a second.
Click.
His eyes snapped open.
Click.
Another.
Click.
He turned slowly toward the window. One golden gun floated just outside, barrel steady. Then another beside it. Then another.
His expression fell. He walked toward the glass, and the sight beyond it stopped him cold.
The building was surrounded. Golden guns filled the street. Above the rooftops. Beneath the windows. Behind the walls. Thousands of barrels, every single one aimed directly at him.
He stared. "...You’ve got to be kidding me."
Tiamat said nothing for a long moment.
Then, quietly: "Kai."
He gripped the Fractured Blade. "I know."
The guns began aligning in perfect unison.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Every weapon locked onto the building at once. He looked around the room. No obvious way out.
The first row of barrels began to glow.
His eyes sharpened. "...So that’s the next stage."
Golden light poured through every window at once, swallowing the room whole.
