Chapter 171
There was another reason why Liyu had been unwilling to shift into his Hybrid Form, which he had gained access to because of his Primal Tyrant Physique: the first reason was simply the amount of Qi it consumed.
Maintaining this form required an enormous amount of Qi, because after all, his strength was being boosted even further in this state, and not by a small margin either, as the increase was massive.
But the amount of Qi it consumed was also proportional to the amount of power it granted him, and based on his current reserves, Liyu could probably only remain in his Hybrid Form for around fourty to sixty minutes at most.
Any longer than that... he would suffer from severe Qi exhaustion. So yes... Liyu really didn’t want to shift into this form unless it was absolutely necessary.
Unfortunately, the situation had already forced his hand. Guan Haoran was simply too much for Liyu to handle in his current state, and with Momentum still on cooldown, he couldn’t rely on it to give him the overwhelming boost he needed.
He could continue fighting Haoran the way he had been fighting before... but honestly, what effect had that even had on the guy?
Almost none. His attacks had barely managed to put Haoran down, and now the big metallic guy had even stood back up after everything Liyu had thrown at him. So... Liyu had no choice.
But the massive consumption of Qi wasn’t the only reason he had been reluctant to transform, as there was another, and that reason was far more dangerous: his bloodlust.
In this state, his bloodlust was heightened to an even greater degree. The moment he entered this form, the urge to tear his opponent apart would become incredibly difficult to suppress.
The desire to kill, to rip his opponent apart, and to paint the entire arena in blood... those urges would fill his mind. Yet Liyu still had control, at least for now. He could suppress those instincts, and he wouldn’t kill Haoran unless something forced him to.
But... Haoran was about to realize that he had made a terrible mistake by forcing Liyu to transform into this form, a very, very terrible mistake, and Liyu was going to make sure he regretted it big time.
Without wasting another moment, Liyu launched his attack.
WHOOSH!
His speed had been boosted even further in this form, and his body moved like a flash. Guan Haoran, who was still studying him, didn’t even have enough time to properly react, because everything happened too fast.
In what seemed like a single second, Liyu had already crossed the entire distance between them. Haoran’s instincts screamed danger, and his body reacted almost on its own as he raised his arms to block, but he was too late, as Liyu was simply too fast.
SLASH!
A large bloody gash suddenly tore open across Haoran’s chest. Haoran’s gaze trembled, and he looked down at his own chest in complete disbelief at his own blood, since a red line had appeared across his metallic chest.
How? The question rang through his mind. How the hell was Liyu able to move that fast? But an even greater question followed immediately after: How the hell was he able to wound me?
His Iron Skin was still active, and his metallic Qi was still further reinforcing his body, meaning that with his current defense, most Earth-Grade weapons wouldn’t even be able to make him bleed. Yet Liyu had done it. He had actually wounded him.
Haoran remained frozen for a brief moment, staring at the red wound across his chest, and his expression slowly changed as a deep scowl appeared on his face. Then he heard it.
Drip.
A drop of blood fell onto the white marble floor.
Drip.
Another followed, and the sound reached his ears. Haoran’s eyes narrowed, but before he could even turn around... he suddenly felt something behind him: Liyu. How? How hadn’t he sensed him?
Haoran’s instincts should have detected someone approaching from behind, yet he hadn’t sensed anything, perhaps because the shock of realizing that he had actually been wounded had distracted him.
But Haoran didn’t have time to think about it, as he was still trying to come to terms with the fact that he had actually been hurt when he heard Liyu’s voice... calm, composed, yet carrying a dangerous edge that made Haoran’s instincts tighten.
"Let’s end this."
Haoran reacted immediately, his body twisting as he launched a strike toward Liyu’s head. The movement was fast, extremely fast, yet Liyu was faster, completely surpassing Haoran’s speed.
Liyu’s clawed hand shot out, grabbed Haoran by the leg, and then...
BOOM!
He slammed him violently into the white marble floor. A deafening bang echoed throughout the arena as Haoran’s massive body smashed into the ground with tremendous force, and cracks spread across the marble beneath him.
Liyu didn’t stop there, immediately following up with another attack, but Haoran reacted quickly enough to escape, his body rolling away and quickly landing several meters away.
He stood there, then slowly raised his gaze toward Liyu, his expression complicated while his eyes shifted from Liyu’s bestial slit eyes to his claws dripping with fresh blood and then back to those terrifying eyes.
Just who is this guy? Haoran couldn’t help but wonder. He had thought Liyu was already a freak before, but now... he seemed like an even greater freak than before, because seriously... how could someone keep increasing their power as if there was no limit to it?
First, Liyu had already possessed terrifying strength, then he had revealed another transformation, and now his speed, strength, and overall combat ability had risen yet again.
Of course, Haoran could tell that the reason Liyu possessed even greater power now was because he had used a transformation skill... at least, that was what Liyu had called it when speaking to the elder.
And since it had already been confirmed that Liyu wasn’t a Beastman, a transformation technique was the only explanation that made any sense. But even then... transformation techniques were rare, extremely rare.
Even Haoran had rarely heard of someone possessing one, let alone using one so effortlessly, which made him wonder just how had Liyu gotten his hands on such a technique?
All those questions could be answered later, but for now, what mattered to Haoran was something far more important: within those two exchanges alone, he could tell without a shred of doubt that he was no match for Liyu in his current state.
Liyu was faster, stronger, and far more dangerous than before. Still... Guan Haoran wasn’t about to give up. He couldn’t give up. There had to be something he could still do.
Exchanging moves with Liyu like this was pointless, as he was clearly at a disadvantage in terms of speed, and his attacks weren’t fast enough to catch Liyu. So... he was going to use the same tactic he had used earlier.
Guan Haoran raised his body and stepped forward, placing his right leg ahead as he activated his Behemoth Stance, his arms crossing directly across his chest in a defensive guard as he waited for Liyu to attack.
The stance was firm, stable, immovable. He had used this method earlier to withstand Liyu’s attacks.
But when Liyu saw that familiar posture... he simply shook his head. That won’t work. Not against me now.
Before Guan Haoran could realize that he had made a terrible mistake... Liyu moved.
WHOOSH!
A raging sound tore through the air as his body shot forward, and the next instant...
SLASH!
Another bloody gash tore open across Guan Haoran’s arm. This time, the pain hit him immediately, and unlike before, he wasn’t caught completely off guard, his eyes widening as he finally realized something crucial: His claws can still tear into my skin!
Haoran’s mind immediately began searching for another tactic, and he quickly pulled his right leg backward, wanting to stomp his left leg hard against the ground and use the force to counterattack.
But... he didn’t even get the chance, because Liyu had been waiting for it, his hand shooting forward and grabbing Haoran’s leg before the left foot could even stomp against the ground. Haoran’s eyes widened, and before he could understand what was happening...
BOOM!
Liyu smashed him hard into the ground. Then again.
BOOM!
And again.
BOOM!
His massive body was repeatedly slammed against the white marble with Liyu using his full bestial strength, and the force behind every single impact was terrifying.
Haoran coughed out a mouthful of blood, his internal organs clearly suffering injuries despite his Iron Skin, and if it wasn’t for his powerful defense... his spine might have already snapped from the sheer force Liyu was using against him.
Guan Haoran’s vision blurred slightly as waves of pain crashed through his body, his entire back feeling as if it had been shattered, but he didn’t pay much attention to it, forcing his vision to clear because he had to see and focus.
And when his vision finally became clear enough... his instincts suddenly screamed DANGER! Haoran’s pupils contracted, and he immediately tried to move away, but he was too slow, far too slow.
To make matters worse, his back was still aching terribly, waves of pain constantly surging through his body and slowing his reactions, and so... the black blur that Haoran was certain was Liyu came crashing down toward him.
BANG!
Liyu’s knee slammed directly into Haoran’s chest, the impact folding his massive body in half.
"Ugh!"
Haoran had no choice but to cough out another large mouthful of blood, his face twisted from the pain, and for the first time since the battle had begun... Guan Haoran actually groaned in deep pain.
But Liyu showed no mercy, none whatsoever, because Haoran was the one who had awakened the beast inside him, and now... Liyu was going to feed it.
Because what did the bestial side of Liyu feed on? Pain, agony, the suffering of his prey, the screams of his victims. With his mind partially clouded by bloodlust, Liyu’s claws suddenly dug deep into Haoran’s leg, and then...
RIP!
He tore a large chunk of flesh away. Blood splattered through the air, and Haoran cried out in agony.
"AAAAARGH!"
The already agonizing pain suddenly intensified several times over, as if the pain had been multiplied. Yet Liyu still wasn’t satisfied, not yet, because he wanted more... more pain, more suffering, more agonizing screams.
His bloodlust demanded it. Liyu rose to his feet and grabbed Haoran by the head, his mind still partially clouded by bloodlust, though he could still control himself enough not to kill the man, knowing that at least... he wouldn’t cross that line. But anything beyond that? That was far beyond his control.
With his mind partially consumed by bloodlust, Liyu raised Haoran’s head... and smashed it violently against the marble floor.
BAAANG!
A deafening sound echoed throughout the arena, and a faint mark appeared on the white marble beneath Haoran’s head, the damage alone making it more than clear that Liyu wasn’t holding back.
If it had been anyone else caught in his grasp... they would have already fainted. But Haoran endured, stubbornly holding on as his consciousness refused to leave him. That stubbornness... only fueled Liyu’s half-crazed state even further.
BANG!
Haoran’s head was smashed into the ground again.
BANG!
Again.
BANG!
Again.
BANG!
Again.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
The deafening sounds echoed endlessly throughout the arena.
The crowd watched with widened eyes, shocked, terrified, and some even unable to believe what they were seeing, feeling as if Liyu had completely changed and as if the person standing on that stage was no longer the same Liyu they had been watching earlier.
Some of them wanted to speak, some wanted to intervene, but they forced themselves to remain silent, because after all... it was clear what Liyu was trying to do.
He wasn’t trying to kill Guan Haoran; he was trying to beat the hell out of him, wanting to make Haoran completely incapable of moving, and by doing so... he would win the match.
Yet Guan Haoran seemed to possess an indomitable will. He endured, again and again... he endured, even when his body was screaming at him to give up, even when every inch of him was begging for the pain to stop, he endured.
Until... it seemed he couldn’t anymore. Liyu smashed Haoran’s face into the ground once more.
BANG!
Again.
BANG!
And again.
BANG!
Until finally... Guan Haoran’s body went limp, his resistance disappeared, his eyes lost their focus, and his consciousness finally slipped away. Guan Haoran... had lost consciousness.
Liyu wanted to crack his skull open, wanting to kill him even if only for a moment as that violent urge surged through his mind with terrifying intensity.
But he held himself back, clenching his teeth and rebuking himself internally: I can’t keep allowing myself to be consumed by bloodlust like this.
This was another pressing problem he needed to deal with soon, very soon, as he had to find a way to control this bloodlust before it eventually became something he could no longer suppress.
But that could wait, because for now, the tournament came first, and after the tournament was over, he would find a way to deal with it. With that thought, Liyu grabbed Guan Haoran’s limp body and casually threw him to the side.
THUD!
Haoran’s body landed heavily on the marble floor. Liyu then turned his gaze toward the referee, his meaning obvious: Announce the winner. The referee paused, wondering if it was only him... or had Liyu suddenly become even more terrifying when dealing with his opponents?
Just moments ago, it had almost seemed as if he wasn’t fighting an opponent at all, but as if a predator had been playing with its prey.
The referee shook his head, deciding not to think too deeply about it, and quickly moved toward Guan Haoran, crouching down to check his condition. He placed two fingers against Haoran’s neck... his pulse was extremely weak.
The referee’s expression became slightly complicated, knowing the guy had really reached his limit and had fought hard, very hard, perhaps even winning if his opponent wasn’t... well... Liyu, that freakish monster who seemed to make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
The referee checked him carefully one more time, and after confirming that Haoran had truly passed out, he finally stood back up, ready to announce the result.
But just then... a sharp voice suddenly cut through the entire arena.
"He is not done yet."
The voice belonged to a woman. Everyone’s eyes immediately turned toward the source as Guan Xueyi had already walked out from the Guan clan’s camp and was now standing close to the stage, confidence gleaming within her eyes as she looked from Haoran’s bloodied and motionless body toward the referee before repeating herself, "He is not done yet."
The referee raised an eyebrow, pointed toward Guan Haoran’s unconscious body, and said, "He’s passed out. There is no way he isn’t done yet," pausing for a moment before adding matter-of-factly, "Because I think he is very much done." He was already preparing to declare Liyu the winner.
But Xueyi shook her head, her expression remaining confident while every word she spoke was filled with absolute certainty.
"I have known Brother Haoran for a very long time now," she said, her gaze softening slightly as she looked at the battered figure lying on the ground. "And if there is one thing I have learned from him, it is that he never gives up.
Not even when everything seems hopeless." She paused. "And even more than that... He never goes back on his word." Her eyes remained fixed on Haoran. "He promised me that he wouldn’t lose." A faint smile appeared on her face. "And I believe in him. He wouldn’t lose."
The referee stared at her for a moment, his expression practically asking one question: Is she sane? The man lying on the ground was unconscious, his body was covered in wounds, his pulse was weak, and there was absolutely no sign that he was getting back up anytime soon.
Yet Xueyi was standing there with complete confidence as if she already knew exactly what was going to happen. She looked at Guan Haoran once more before turning back toward the referee.
"Give him thirty seconds."
The referee frowned. "Thirty seconds?"
"Within thirty seconds, he will rise back up." She paused. "If he doesn’t... Then I will accept that he has lost."
The referee wanted to reject the ridiculous request, genuinely believing she was simply being delusional, but after a moment of consideration, he shrugged, realizing there was no harm in waiting thirty seconds.
"Fine," he said, raising his hand. "I’ll count to thirty. If he doesn’t get up by then, I’ll declare Liyu the winner."
Xueyi nodded. The referee began counting.
"One..."
Xueyi looked toward Haoran, clasping her hands together and silently praying.
"Two..."
"Three..."
The seconds continued to pass, but Haoran didn’t move, and there wasn’t even the slightest twitch. The crowd slowly began to lose hope.
"Ten..."
"Eleven..."
"Fourteen..."
"Fifteen..."
"Sixteen..."
"Seventeen..."
"Eighteen..."
"Nineteen..."
Still nothing. Xueyi’s heart tightened, but she didn’t give up, stepping slightly closer and staring at Haoran’s motionless body. "Brother Hao..." her voice was softer now. "You are about to lose."
Nothing.
"Do you know that? You hate losing just like me, don’t you?" Her voice trembled slightly. "So why are you still holding yourself back?"
"Twenty..."
The countdown continued. "If you lose, I lose. And if we lose... Our entire clan loses as well."
"Twenty-five..."
Xueyi’s hands tightened. "Twenty-six... Brother Hao... It’s okay." Her voice became more urgent. "You can stop holding yourself back now."
"Twenty-seven..."
"Remember... You promised everyone you care about that you would win, didn’t you?"
"Twenty-eight..."
"So get up. Win this tournament. Just as you promised."
"Twenty-nine..."
"Brother Hao... Get up. Finish your match."
"Thirty!"
The final number echoed throughout the arena. For a brief moment... nothing happened, and the entire arena was silent. Then... twitch.
Guan Haoran’s fingers moved. Xueyi’s eyes brightened, and in the very next instant... Guan Haoran’s eyes suddenly snapped open.
