The twentieth of October.
The cold winds of northern Zhongzhou howled endlessly, a stark contrast to the heatwaves rolling off True Yang Mountain. Where the hot and cold air met in the sky and mountain gorges, they converged to form visible streams of Qi Force.
Mornings in Sanshui City were now free from the assault of the Fire Spirit Qi. The Earth Veins surrounding the city had been turned over and cleansed, then planted with the pine and cypress trees most common to the northern forests of Ningzhou Road.
As a result, the mists formed in the Ningzhou Road forests now successfully spread over the city on winter mornings.
Outside the city, a squad of soldiers returned to their camp through the mist after finishing their patrol. The first thing they did was gather around a bonfire to warm up, then, as usual, they began bantering about the war.
At 7:45 AM, the sky was still dim. A searing presence descended from above, dispelling the winter chill and illuminating the dusky heavens, causing the soldiers garrisoned in the city to look up.
The sky was vast and the mist was thick. The soldiers could only see the currents created by the churning fog and hear the SIZZLE of it evaporating. A crimson glow flickered within the mist, and a burning sting pricked at their faces.
THUD.
Some soldiers collapsed right onto the ground, overcome by fear of the unknown. From their perspective, it was as if the sky itself was falling.
BOOM!
The rolling crimson light in the mist had yet to fall when a tremendous roar echoed in the soldiers’ ears.
Something had slammed into the ground farther away.
"Don’t panic!"
A familiar voice echoed between heaven and earth. A faint glimmer of light flashed in the mist and vanished. The next moment, many more lights began to flicker. A few breaths later, the thick fog began to dissipate at a visible rate, and the fiery glow within it vanished as well.
It was Zuo Xuan who had acted.
Those dense rays of light were her Embroidery Needles. Each of her needles was inscribed with a special Array, and with every pass, they absorbed a portion of the mist.
They streaked across the sky for miles, like a torrential downpour.
When she recalled the Embroidery Needles, the world suddenly became clear.
But now the soldiers could also see what they were facing. Dozens of miles away, between the slopes of True Yang Mountain, clusters of flames covered half the sky as fire on the ground clashed with flames suspended beneath the clouds.
The soldiers only watched for a few breaths before their eyes began to burn and sting, and they noticed minor burns appearing on their skin.
"Don’t stare at the fire!"
Two Water Cultivators floated above the encampment. They activated the portable Spirit Gathering Arrays they carried, converting the Spiritual Qi above the camp into water-aspected spirit energy.
The relieved soldiers gasped for air. Just moments ago, many of them had felt death’s approach!
DONG DONG DONG
As military orders were issued one after another, the sound of drums rang out from every camp.
It was the signal to assemble.
Most of the sleeping soldiers didn’t wake up, as they hadn’t rested for several days.
The Captains of each district had no choice but to run into the tents and kick their Squad Commanders awake.
More than ten breaths after the drums began, a Protective Barrier rose from the center of the city. The barrier acted as a signal, and soon, Defense Barriers of various sizes rose from the camps on the mountain peaks ahead.
Next, dozens of silhouettes belonging to Entering Cultivators streaked across the flame-dyed sky, flying toward the camps on the mountain peaks. Each of them carried a military directive.
At that moment, more flames fell from True Yang Mountain, bringing with them rolling waves of heat.
"Hold your positions!"
"Don’t run around!"
"Stand firm!"
The Captains’ sharp rebukes were endless.
Amid the cacophony, a pillar of white light shot up from the city center, forcing back all the flames in its path.
VMMMMMM.
It was the sound of a horn.
The brilliant golden light of dawn mixed with the fire in the sky, casting a hazy golden halo over the land and True Yang Mountain. On the peaks before them, the Chu Army camps were now assembling their troops in an orderly fashion. They were not preparing to attack, but to retreat south.
A few breaths later, a figure plummeted from beneath the crimson clouds like a meteorite, creating sonic booms as it fell.
WHOOSH!
From the center of the city, Hu Qianqian fired a ray of starlight that struck the figure.
The moment it was hit by the starlight, the figure tumbled several times in the air before continuing its descent.
Soon after, the figure landed outside the northern wall of Sanshui City with a dull thud, blasting out a deep crater. Flames licked out from the impact, and the intense heat scorched the surrounding ground black. The person in the crater never stood up again.
He was dead.
Several figures landed on the northern wall. They were all Second Realm Cultivators assembled by the Chu Army. One of them, an Earth Vein Cultivator, first bowed to the corpse in the crater before taking out a storage pouch and placing the body inside. Then, he formed a hand seal and used an Earth Vein Technique to fill in the crater.
The next moment, streams of light appeared from the Chu Army’s rear, landing in the North City District of Sanshui City in groups of five.
These were all the Second Realm Cultivators the Chu Army had gathered!
Seeing this, the cautious Qi Cultivators in the distance were already thinking about how to escape. The bold ones, however, were pondering how they might rush up True Yang Mountain ahead of the experts and make a fortune.
At this critical moment, another figure fell from the sky. Due to its excessive speed, it was blocked by the city’s barrier. It tumbled and slid off the edge of the barrier to the outside, leaving a distinct bloody smear on the shield, which was quickly and automatically cleansed.
A nearby squad of Second Realm Cultivators immediately sent out their divine sense to probe his aura. After confirming he was dead, one of them used the Soul Searching Technique to read his residual memories. After swiping his storage pouch, they used Magic to bury his mangled body deep underground, all while chanting a sutra for the deceased.
Someone nearby commented, "What a waste," lamenting the loss of such a fine physical body.
BOOM!
A huge explosion sounded from high above. It was a strange sound—seeming both distant and near, so close they could feel the ground shake.
The sky still looked as it did before, scorched by the great fire...
It was the northern side of True Yang Mountain’s main peak!
Someone was attacking the northern side of the main peak at the same time.
Just then, two streaks of light flew over from the direction of Laishan in the rear and hovered above Sanshui City.
It was Liu Shuang and Zhao Yu’er. They gazed at the chaotic Fire Spirit Qi and the gradually distorting spirituality on True Yang Mountain with complicated expressions.
"I really want to go up and see. It must be incredible on the mountain right now." The part of Zhao Yu’er’s soul possessed by the Demon Soldier was currently jumping for joy.
Liu Shuang glanced back at her disciple, her eyes carrying a clear warning. Zhao Yu’er immediately and obediently shut her mouth.
Zuo Xuan sighed. "After this, True Yang Mountain may no longer exist in Zhongzhou..." She paused for a moment, then continued, "According to our intelligence, there are at least fifty thousand elite soldiers in Sanyang City, and... more than three hundred thousand civilians."
Hu Qianqian glanced back toward Laishan and said, "So that’s why the mountain’s spirituality is in chaos."
Liu Shuang said calmly, "In that case, Zhongzhou might have peace for a long time to come." After speaking, she looked at Zuo Xuan. "Let’s end this as quickly as possible."
"Alright!"
Zuo Xuan nodded lightly and threw two red signal flares into the air.
When the flares exploded, the Entering Cultivators who had long been waiting in various locations transformed into streaks of light and landed before Sanshui City. They materialized the standardized Gathering Spirit Arrays they held in their hands.
The next moment, the Arrays on both sides of the river channel surrounding the outer perimeter of True Yang Mountain were activated. A faint, cyan curtain of light shot into the sky, reaching deep into the clouds. Then, a thousand Foundation Establishment Cultivators descended, finding their positions according to the activated Arrays and forming hand seals.
A few breaths later, the cyan light curtain grew more solid.
Zuo Xuan looked up, as if trying to see the top of the light curtain within the clouds, and said, "May your dao fortunes flourish!"
With that, she took the lead and flew toward True Yang Mountain. Close behind her were Liu Shuang, Hu Qianqian, and Zhao Yu’er, followed by the other Second Realm Cultivators!
