Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Interview

Junxiao Capital was bustling with activity today.

Candidates recommended by a headhunting firm for the general manager and vice president positions were here for interviews!

Zhao Hui had come to report to Xu Wu today, but the timing was a bit unfortunate—she was swamped.

When the receptionist learned that Zhao Hui was looking for President Xu for the Jiangzhou Wansheng Square interview, they led him to a waiting room to queue up.

Zhao Hui wanted to explain that his position was an internal appointment, but then he thought, ’President Xu is busy anyway. Waiting here is the same as waiting anywhere else.’ So, he followed the receptionist into the waiting room.

Although he was told to queue, there weren’t many people. He figured a headhunting firm wouldn’t recommend anyone unreliable.

After all, not many people would meet the standards after the headhunter’s screening process.

When Zhao Hui entered, there was already a middle-aged man in the waiting room. Seeing Zhao Hui come in, the man nodded a greeting.

Zhao Hui returned a polite smile and greeted him back.

"Are you here for an interview too?"

He saw that Zhao Hui was only about twenty-six or twenty-seven. There were only two positions open for interviews today: General Manager of Jiangzhou Wansheng and Vice President of Operations!

"You could say that," Zhao Hui said with a nod. He was the internally appointed VP of Operations, so meeting Xu Wu today could be considered a type of interview.

"Let me introduce myself. My name is Liu Nan. I’m currently the general manager of a commercial plaza in a prefecture-level city under Wansheng Group. You look a bit unfamiliar. Which commercial group did you work for before?"

Wansheng Square had fifteen plazas in the Han River region, and Liu Nan was the general manager of one of the more established ones.

His family was from Jiangzhou, so he wanted to use this opportunity to move back. Besides, even though the position was only VP of Operations for Jiangzhou Wansheng, the resources at his command would be far greater than those of a general manager at one of the smaller city plazas.

After all, Jiangzhou Wansheng Square was a place where many brands would beg and plead to get in. In contrast, unless their smaller plazas were very well-established, they had to go around asking for favors just to attract a good brand.

The recent collective withdrawal of several major brands from the Wansheng plazas was the most obvious example. Liu Nan had said everything he could, talking until his mouth was dry, but it was completely useless. They wouldn’t give him any face at all!

If this had happened at Jiangzhou Wansheng Square, would those brands have dared? If they pulled out, there were plenty of others waiting to take their place. Competing brands would be guaranteed to move in immediately.

"My name is Zhao Hui. I previously worked at a retail company."

Liu Nan found this amusing and grew a little disdainful. This guy in front of him probably had no idea what was going on.

Today was the interview for a core position at Jiangzhou Wansheng Square. Even a veteran general manager like himself, who had worked on the client side for many years, felt immense pressure interviewing for a vice president role. Where did a guy from the supplier side, with zero mall management experience, get his confidence?

He started to look down on Zhao Hui, snickering, "And which retail company’s general manager might you be? I know a lot of brand owners, but I’ve never seen you before."

As a veteran in the business world, he had met basically every general manager of any reasonably well-known brand in the Han River region. He was certain he had no impression of the man before him.

Zhao Hui answered honestly, "I was in the logistics department at Yino Group’s Jiangzhou Branch."

PFFT! Liu Nan couldn’t hold back a laugh. He quickly grabbed a tissue to wipe his mouth and shook his head. "You’ve really got guts!"

After saying that, he ignored Zhao Hui completely, having already written him off as an idiot in his mind.

Zhao Hui was happy for the quiet. He was used to being looked down on; he’d even had people point at his face and mock him before. Liu Nan’s casual disdain didn’t bother him in the slightest.

The quiet lasted less than five minutes before there was a sound from outside. Both men instinctively looked toward the door, and all three of them froze in surprise!

They knew each other!

Liu Nan had already stood up awkwardly. "President Peng, good to see you!"

Peng Yu and Liu Nan stared at each other awkwardly. Fortunately, Peng Yu was an old hand and immediately smiled. "President Liu, have a seat!"

A subordinate and his boss showing up for the same interview—what a magnificent sight!

At the same time, Peng Yu also spotted Zhao Hui. Enemies see red when they cross paths. He sneered, "What are you doing here, kid? Shouldn’t you be out delivering packages?"

"None of your damn business!" Zhao Hui didn’t put up with his crap. He glared at Peng Yu. Every time he saw this man who had harassed his sister, he had the urge to beat him up.

Peng Yu was furious but didn’t dare provoke him further. After all, with this hothead’s personality, if he decided to land a couple more kicks on him, Liu Nan probably wouldn’t be able to protect him.

Besides, he was here for an interview today. If something like that happened, it would ruin everything.

Liu Nan immediately saw the bad blood between them. He leaned over and whispered a few words in Peng Yu’s ear, which made Peng Yu look at Zhao Hui and sneer relentlessly.

As he listened, he burst into wild laughter, laughing so hard he couldn’t stand up straight.

After a moment, Peng Yu said to Liu Nan, "President Liu, you’re not mistaken, are you? This is definitely material for a comedy sketch on the Spring Festival Gala!"

"How would I dare lie to you, boss!" Liu Nan replied, laying on the flattery.

"Sigh, some people just don’t know their own limits," Peng Yu said mockingly.

"President Liu, you’re one of Wansheng Group’s best general managers, and yet today you’re only applying for the vice president role. You’re being too modest! I think you could be interviewing for the CEO of Wansheng Group!"

He laughed again after speaking. Liu Nan knew the comment was a veiled jab at Zhao Hui.

He played along, "You’re teasing me, boss. I’m not so arrogant as to not know my place. I just want to continue working under you and follow your leadership!"

Peng Yu patted his shoulder. "I appreciate the thought. The general manager has absolute recommendation power over the appointment of the VP of Operations. After I talk with President Xu, I’ll recommend you!"

Liu Nan was overjoyed. It was no wonder Peng Yu was so confident. As a regional manager for Wansheng Group and the former general manager of Jiangzhou Wansheng, he was undoubtedly one of the best candidates for the GM position.

Liu Nan even believed that as long as Peng Yu wanted the job, he was the only logical choice for this general manager position.

And just as he’d said, while a general manager might not have the final say over their core subordinate positions, they certainly had the right to make recommendations—and very influential ones at that. Under normal circumstances, the new employer wouldn’t refuse.

There was one thing Liu Nan didn’t mention: he had actually come to interview for the general manager position. The VP of Operations role was his backup plan.

Aim high to land in the middle; aim for the middle to land low, after all!

But with Peng Yu’s arrival, he gave up on demanding the general manager position. Landing the VP of Operations role at Jiangzhou Wansheng wouldn’t be bad either.

While they were chatting, the previous candidate’s interview finished. They heard voices outside, and Liu Nan and Peng Yu exchanged a look.

It was someone they knew. Liu Nan quietly walked to the door, peeked through the crack, and then came back. "It really is President Xu Jun!"

Xu Jun, the current general manager of Jiangzhou Wansheng and, in Peng Yu’s mind, his strongest competitor!

A moment later, an assistant came to ask Peng Yu to go in. Although he had arrived later, the headhunter had scheduled his appointment in advance. Liu Nan had simply arrived early.

The interviews were conducted according to the scheduled times, not arrival times, and would only be pushed back if someone missed their appointment.

Peng Yu walked into the general manager’s office. Even for someone accustomed to grand scenes, he couldn’t help but marvel at the opulence of the office decor.

’As expected of a capital management firm,’ he thought. ’They’re loaded!’
