My Dao to Eternity
Chapter 117: Farther Away, Not Deeper
The first thing Li Fan noticed, once he'd eaten properly and slept a full night in his own bed rather than the chamber's cold floor, was that his qi didn't feel the way three months of continuous refinement should have left it feeling.
He'd expected depth. Every prior breakthrough had delivered exactly that — a fuller reservoir, a denser current, power sitting closer beneath his skin than it had the day before. What he found instead, reaching inward the next morning to check the new core's shape, was a strange, disorienting distance, his qi answering his call a fraction slower than it ever had at Peak Qi Sea, as though the core now sat somewhere further from his conscious reach than the old scattered reserves had ever needed to travel.
He sat with the sensation a long while, unwilling to dismiss it as mere post-breakthrough fatigue. Old Mu would have told him, dryly, that a man too eager to explain away a strange symptom usually ended up missing the actual disease beneath it, and Li Fan carried that particular lesson forward now with the same care he'd have given any patient's unexplained complaint.
He found the answer three days later, not in the core itself, but in his own hands. He'd gripped a stone paperweight absently while reading through Wei Baishan's old formation texts, and felt it crack cleanly in half beneath a pressure he hadn't consciously intended to apply, his fingers registering no particular effort at all.
His bones. He understood it plainly, turning his own wrist over in the lamplight and pressing careful fingers along the ridge of bone beneath the skin, finding a density there that hadn't existed three months before, a weight and solidity closer to worked stone than to anything an ordinary skeleton should carry. The sutra's own long-held principle surfaced in his memory, the same line he'd first encountered years ago and only partly understood at the time: body, soul, and qi were never separate tracks. When one advanced, the others followed.

His qi hadn't grown shallower. It had simply needed to travel further to reach conscious call now, because the body carrying it had deepened beneath it at the very same moment the core condensed above — his skeleton undergoing its own quiet transformation in step with the breakthrough, marrow and bone alike returning toward some plainer, denser truth the same way his gathered qi had returned toward origin in that sealed chamber.
He tested it carefully over the following days, the same patient method he brought to any new capability. His grip, applied deliberately now rather than by accident, could crack stone at will where it once required a focused strike. A fall down the training room's short stairs, taken purposely to test the limit, left no bruise at all where it should have left a considerable one. His hearing, already sharp since his earliest years of cultivation, caught sounds now from further across the courtyard than it ever had, some deeper refinement in the bone structure around his own ears sharpening what qi alone had never fully managed.
He thought of the sutra's earlier stages while he tested it — Returning Flesh, the tempering that had first hardened his skin against a mercenary's blade years before any of this had a name. Returning Blood, the transformation that had carried him through Qi Sea. This, he understood now, testing his own solid, deepened bones against the evidence of a cracked stone paperweight, was simply the next plain step along the same quiet path. Returning Bone. Not power added from outside, but weakness and waste finally stripped away, until what remained sat closer to whatever a body had always been meant to be before ordinary living wore it thin.
He didn't celebrate the discovery, the same way he'd never once celebrated any prior stage of this same slow unfolding. He simply noted it, tested it, and folded it carefully into the accumulating shape of what his own body and cultivation together were quietly becoming. The core sat further from easy reach now, but the reach itself had grown correspondingly stronger, and he suspected, sitting with the thought a long while in the training room's quiet lamplight, that this particular trade would only deepen further the higher this path eventually carried him.
A seed did not grow great by growing faster. It grew great because its roots reached deeper. His bones, apparently, had finally begun learning the same lesson his qi had learned in that sealed chamber, and Li Fan suspected this would not be the last time the two lessons arrived together.
