Chapter 188
The Beast Lord
The city held through the Infant Formation beasts. Barely, and at a cost Li Fan felt through the network long before any runner arrived to confirm it — boundaries gone dark across three districts, formation masters dead or too badly wounded to hold their posts, the loose, improvised structure that had carried the city through a full day and night now full of gaps that no amount of remaining strength could entirely close.
His own boundary held. He'd fed it everything he could spare, reinforced every node twice over, and watched the demonic cultivators hunting formation masters pass close enough to feel twice without ever choosing his own small circle as a target. He didn't know why. He didn't waste time wondering. He simply kept his qi moving through the nodes and waited for whatever came next.
What came next arrived without warning, and without anything resembling the gradual buildup that had preceded every earlier escalation of the siege.
Li Fan felt it the instant it crossed some threshold at the edge of his senses — a presence that made the Infant Formation beasts feel, in retrospect, almost survivable by comparison. It didn't rise slowly the way the earlier pressure had. It simply arrived, whole and immediate, somewhere beyond the northern wall, and every cultivator within his sensing range who held any real awareness of cultivation went still at exactly the same moment.
Tribulation.
Mu Qinghe's bow lowered without him seeming to notice he'd lowered it. Luo Yulan's blade hand had gone rigid at her side. Even Mu Wan, who lacked the cultivation to sense the pressure directly, seemed to feel something in the way the adults around her had gone suddenly, uniformly quiet.
A second presence joined the first within minutes, different in character but similar in weight, and Li Fan understood without needing confirmation that the Beast Tide had entered a stage no one in the city had genuinely prepared for. Ordinary beasts, driven by hunger and instinct. Infant Formation predators, dangerous but comprehensible. And now something drawn from a tier of power that belonged, in Li Fan's understanding of the world, to Ancestors and sect founders rather than to any creature that could be funneled through a formation boundary and cut down by an arrow.
A runner never reached his boundary this time. There was no one left with the composure to run messages through streets where the ground itself had begun trembling from something that wasn't an assault on any single wall, but a presence simply existing nearby.
The pressure climbed again within the hour, and this time Li Fan felt the network itself begin to fail — not through sabotage, not through beasts breaking any single boundary, but through sheer proximity to something whose weight alone was enough to destabilize formations that had held firm through an entire day of direct assault.

A boundary two streets over flickered and went dark, its formation master still alive as far as Li Fan could tell, simply unable to hold a structure together against pressure that pressed on every node at once regardless of distance. His own circle wavered under the same weight, the pale light along its edge dimming for a stretch of several breaths before he managed to force enough qi through the nodes to steady it.
"What is that?" Mu Wan asked, voice barely above a whisper, staring toward the north where the pressure originated though there was nothing visible yet to explain it.
"Something far beyond anything we fought tonight," Li Fan said. He kept his own voice level, though the effort of doing so cost him more than he wanted her to see. "Stay close. Stay inside the boundary. That's all any of us can do right now."
Then the true weight arrived, and every smaller pressure that had come before it folded into something that no longer registered as separate at all.
Li Fan had read, years ago, about what a Peak Tribulation presence was supposed to feel like from a distance, filed alongside every other piece of theoretical knowledge he'd accumulated without ever expecting to test it directly. Nothing in those old texts had prepared him for the reality of it settling over an entire city at once.
The air itself seemed to thicken. Every boundary within his sensing range — his own included — dimmed at the same instant, not from any direct attack, but simply because the presence bearing down on the district made the formations feel, for one long, suspended moment, like nothing at all. A Formation Sphere passing somewhere overhead trembled visibly, its formation master's control audibly straining even from this distance, the vast careful structure shuddering the way a small boat shudders when a much larger vessel passes too close.
Li Fan stopped trying to understand what was happening beyond the boundary's edge. There was no understanding available to him at this scale, no piece of theory or accumulated experience that made the presence any less overwhelming for being recognized. He narrowed everything he had left down to one single task: keep the four nodes fed, keep the boundary standing, keep the people inside it alive for one more breath, and then the breath after that.
Word came later, pieced together from fragments Li Fan caught through his own strained senses rather than from any runner brave enough to move through streets gone this dangerous. The Flood Dragon Beast Lord, the same ancient presence rumored for years to dwell somewhere within Myriad Beast Valley, had finally shown itself in full — a Peak Tribulation existence whose cooperation with the demonic forces was no longer a matter of hint or suspicion, but plain and undeniable fact playing out over the ruins of the northern district.
And behind it, rising to match its weight, came the demonic Tribulation cultivators themselves — the sect leaders Li Fan had heard rumored in whispers for years, finally committing their own strength to a battle that had, until this moment, been fought entirely by beasts and lesser cultivators on both sides.
Li Fan knelt at his northern node, every scrap of attention he could spare given over to keeping the boundary's pale light from guttering out entirely, and understood that the war being decided somewhere beyond the wall had moved into territory where nothing he could build, no matter how carefully constructed, would matter to its outcome in the slightest.
His task hadn't changed. It had only become smaller, and more absolute. Hold the ground beneath his own feet. Keep the people he'd sworn, without ever quite saying it aloud, to protect. Let whatever happened above the wall happen without him, because there was nothing left for him to do about it except survive whatever came down from it.
