Blue Mana: 8/100
--
The Sprite could not maintain the Smoke Mist much longer.
"Release it," Carlos shouted. "Save your mana!"
Blue wanted to protest but lowered both hands. The mana exhaustion was getting to it now and it was fully made of mana.
The mist stopped moving and the last seventy-one locusts rose above the smoke.
They gathered into one group and flew toward the Tidal Silverwood. Its blue-veined leaves contained more mana than every other crop and the whole swarm wanted it.
One fired, the Water Shot eliminated several, but the rest continued.
Carlos was too far away to do much but Brann on the other hand thought less and threw his hammer.
The enormous weapon spun through the air and passed through the swarm.
Dozens of locusts broke apart.
The hammer struck the ground beside the tree without touching it. If it did, Carlos knew he needed to eat some bear meat dishes.
[Ironbeak Locusts remaining: 38/300]
Blue flew in front of the Tidal Silverwood while its mana was almost gone.
The Sprite spread both arms anyway and to Carlos’s surprise, the tree reacted.
Blue light moved through its leaves and entered Blue’s body.
[Tidal Silverwood effect activated]
[Water-aligned creature mana recovery increased]

Blue Mana: 18/100

"BLOO!"
Blue released everything it had.
A wall of water rose from the Mana Spring and struck the remaining swarm.
The locusts were thrown into the Spirit Farmland.
Carlos, One and Brann reached them together.
Less than a minute later, the final Ironbeak broke beneath Carlos’s axe.
[Ironbeak Locust eliminated]
[Wave 2 completed]
[Territory Integrity: 93%]
[Total Crop Damage: 7%]
[Building Damage: 2%]
[Resident Casualties: 0]
Carlos dropped the axe and sat in the wet soil.
Seven percent of the crops had been damaged.
It hurt, but the fields remained alive.
Rowan entered the Rare plot and began checking which wheat plants could be saved.
Mira limped out of the smoky kitchen with tears running from her irritated eyes.
She was still smiling.
"I do not want to cook locusts," she said.
"Agreed."
[Next wave in 15 minutes]
[Final Wave information]
[Ironjaw Field Rats x50]
[Granary Devourer x1]
[Warning: Enemies will prioritize stored food and crop roots]
The ground beneath the Common Farmland moved.
Carlos’s smile disappeared.
The final wave was coming from below.
"Everyone off the fields!" Carlos shouted.
Rowan immediately left the Rare plot.
He followed the marked path, using the wooden stakes to avoid the planted rows.
Brann recovered his hammer and moved away from the Spirit Farmland. One bounced toward Carlos while Blue returned to the Mana Spring to recover mana.
Mira remained beside the kitchen.
"What about the food?" she asked.
The warning said the enemies would prioritize stored food and roots.
The kitchen contained wheat, berries, Goblin rations and the ingredients reserved for the next meal contract.
"Move everything into my inventory."
Mira opened the kitchen storage and transferred every ingredient she could.
[Common Wheat x214 obtained]
[Wild Berries x7 obtained]
[Goblin Rations x9 obtained]
[Berry Wheat Porridge x10 obtained]
The kitchen shelves became empty.
"Leave one ration outside," Carlos said.
Mira looked at him.
"You want them to eat it?"
"I want them to come out somewhere that isn’t a field."
Her eyes brightened.
"Bait."
Mira took one Goblin ration and mixed it with two portions of porridge. She spread the food over a wide wooden tray and carried it toward the barren edge of the territory.
Carlos took it from her.
"Your ankle is injured. Stay near the hut."
"It feels much better after the potion."
"Stay near the hut anyway."
Mira smiled at him.
"All right."
Carlos placed the tray far from the kitchen and every cultivated plot.
The ground beneath the Common Farmland moved again.
A line travelled beneath the wheat, pushing the soil upward.
Rowan crouched at the edge and watched it.
"There are several tunnels," he said. "The roots are making them turn."
"Can you tell where they will surface?"
"No. I can only see where the soil has become loose."
That was enough.
Carlos used the Tool Workshop to summon two Stone Pickaxes and three Iron Hoes. He placed them around the fields so everyone could reach one quickly.
Brann ignored the tools and kept his hammer.
"When something moves below you, hit the ground," Carlos told him.
The Bearkin nodded.
"Blue, we need water inside the tunnels. Not over the crops."
The Sprite floated above the moving soil.
"Bloo."
"Wait until they appear."
[Final Wave will begin in 5 minutes]
Carlos inspected the barriers.
They were useless against something underground.
Instead, he widened the shallow water trenches surrounding the Rare and Spirit plots. If Blue filled them, any tunnel crossing the edge would collapse or become visible.
Rowan helped him without entering the loose areas.
One waited beside the bait tray.
"Do not eat it," Carlos said.
The slime bounced.
"That means no."
One bounced again.
Carlos decided to trust it.
[Final Wave in 1 minute]
Everyone moved into position.
Carlos stood between the Common Farmland and the Spirit plot. Brann waited in the center. Rowan and Mira remained beside the Lord’s hut while Blue floated above the spring.
The territory became silent again.
[Final Wave has commenced]
The ground exploded when the notifications came and Ironjaw Field Rats came out everywhere.
They were larger than ordinary dogs, with brown fur and long front teeth covered in dark metal. Some appeared between the wheat rows. Others broke through the barren ground around the buildings.
Five surfaced directly beside the bait which made One fire.
Water Shot struck the first rat and threw it across the tray.
The others ignored the slime and attacked the food.
"The bait works!"
Carlos drove his Iron Hoe into the closest tunnel.
"Blue, here!"
The next moment, water entered the opening. The tunnel filled faster than the dry ground could absorb it.
Three rats burst from the soil several meters away, coughing and shaking mud from their fur.
Brann reached them, his hammer crushed the first against the ground.
[Ironjaw Field Rat eliminated]
The second jumped at his leg.
Its metal teeth entered the Bearkin’s leather armor.
Brann lifted the rat with one hand and threw it toward One.
Water Shot hit it in the air and Carlos finished it with his spear, making the Bearkin roar in satisfaction.
[Ironjaw Field Rat eliminated]
More rats entered the fields.
But they did not eat the leaves and instead, dug beneath the plants and bit through the roots.
