My Farming Domain Is Broken

Carlos closed the Trade section and opened his inventory again.

The three remaining Warden Chains occupied separate slots. They looked harmless there, like lengths of a normal chains just kept in the inventory.

But Carlos knew better.

One had dragged Brann across Ironroot and pulled both of them into the Reverse Conquest. Another had wrapped around Carlos’s arm before sacrificing itself to suppress the second eye.

They were not ordinary sealing materials. He had a feeling about it which made him select one.

The chain appeared over his palm and immediately wrapped around his forearm. Every link shifted until its flat surface faced outward. Carlos was stunned for a moment.

Kaia was standing nearby and the mere presence of the chain made her flinch and draw her sword.

"... Don’t worry, its okay" Carlos said wich his face all concerned.

"Your face says something else. And just because it did that before, doesn’t mean it is safe to use."

Carlos looked at her for a moment before he muttered, "Nothing I own is safe, Kaia"

The Burstpod rotated toward them after hearing their voices. Its barrel followed the chain until Carlos moved beyond its firing lane.

Kaia ordered everyone away from the western training ground. Rowan took one look at the chain and moved Elias and Boro farther from the nearby vegetable rows. Memories were attacked to those chains.

"If that damages the field, I wouldn’t be able to forgive you this time, my lord. I am sorry" Rowan said.

"I was already planning to avoid the field... the feeling’s mutual" This time, it seemed as though Rowan was serious.

His fields had already been destroyed one too many times.

"Plan harder."

Carlos ignored him and faced an unused wooden target. He extended his arm and focused on the board as if thinking that will make the chain move.

But the chain remained wrapped around him.

He imagined it flying forward like it had during the sealing. Nothing happened.

"Move," Carlos ordered.

One link lifted before falling against his wrist.

Kaia watched carefully with widened eyes, "It reacted, my lord"

Carlos focused again, this time remembering the moment he had confirmed the sacrifice. He had not moved the chain physically. He had decided where it needed to go.

The chain rose this time and floated above his arm like a dark metal snake waiting to strike.

Carlos pointed at the target and the chain launched forward.

It missed the board, wrapped around the supporting post and ripped it from the soil.

The post flew toward Carlos.

Kaia moved in between and bashed the supporting post aside before it struck his face.

"I had that under control." Carlos spoke.

"No, you did not."

Brann walked closer with open interest.

"Chain strong. Bind Brann."

Carlos thought of using it on him, but then imagined Brann pulling against it and destroying half the training ground.

"We will test that after the walls are finished."

"Walls weak right now, can break with one wing."

"That is exactly the problem."

Carlos chose another target and tried again. The chain followed his arm more smoothly this time and wrapped around the wooden frame.

He pulled.

The frame slid across the ground and stopped beside his feet.

Carlos practiced until he could send the chain in a mostly straight direction. It could grab targets, pull objects and change direction once before returning.

One bounced toward the fallen target and pushed it upright. Carlos sent the chain forward again, but the links curved toward the slime’s moving body instead.

"Stop!"

The chain froze less than a foot from One’s core, it had entered One’s body too fast for it to do anything.

One collapsed flat against the ground.

Carlos recalled the chain so quickly that it struck his own shoulder. The links had followed movement without being told, just as they had when the Warden controlled them.

Kaia crouched beside One and checked its core.

"It was not targeting the board," she said.

"I noticed."

"Then do not use it beside allies until you can stop it as easily as you attack, my lord"

Carlos agreed. A weapon that chose convenient targets would be more dangerous to Ironroot than whatever stood outside its walls. He needed to understand it.

Kaia threw a wooden practice spear without warning, at a slower pace to test the waters.

Carlos saw it coming and willed the chain upward.

The links struck the spear aside and Carlos grinned.

"Again."

The second spear passed beneath the chain and hit him in the stomach, the armour helped it stay outside but it punctured a little. Carlos had to drink a potion.

Kaia lowered her empty hand. "One success does not mean mastery, my lord. Also, my apologies for hurting you" She spoke but didn’t seem to say it by heart.

But Carlos could understand, she was doing it for his own sake, be it as dominant as she was

Carlos rubbed the place where it struck after the potions was done healing. "Again."

After several attempts, Kaia replaced the targets with an unused iron wall brace. Carlos wrapped the chain around it and tried lifting it.

The brace rose several feet but then the chain pulled Carlos from his feet instead.

He landed face-first in the dirt while the iron brace crashed behind him.

Mira laughed from beside the kitchen before covering her mouth.

"Sorry! I was worried first but then that happened"

Carlos pushed himself up and spat out soil.

The chain could pull with considerable force, but that force still needed something to push against. It did not make Carlos heavier or stronger.

Carlos anchored one end around a wall post and tried again. This time, the brace rose without pulling him forward.

That gave him several ideas. He could cross gaps, stop a charging enemy or pull someone away from danger if a solid anchor existed nearby.

Then the wall post cracked. Carlos lowered the brace before Kaia could say anything.

"Good thing we know the wall is weak, we will work on it."

"You restored that section yesterday, my lord..."

"Then we just discovered it needed another reinforcement."

Kaia wrote the damage on her construction list with a sigh.

Suddenly, a system notification appeared.

Carlos read the final warning twice. He was confused at first but when a few minutes were gone by, the chain suddenly moved without his order.

Every link turned north toward the isolated platform holding the Warden’s Closed Eye.

The Veteran Guard watching the platform immediately raised his shield.

Carlos forced the chain downward. A sharp pain entered his forehead, but the links continued pulling toward the Eye.

His vision doubled. Carlos tried taking one step and nearly walked into Kaia before she caught his arm.

The chain had not consumed mana according to his profile. It strained something else, forcing his concentration to carry every moving link at once.

"Return."

The chain resisted. Carlos clenched his fist and focused until the chain finally loosened and disappeared into his inventory. But the pain still remained behind his eyes.

Kaia stopped beside him. "This weapon is moving against your will, my lord. It won’t do well during a fight when you need absolute control"

Carlos looked toward the northern platform, the locked box was still there and had not moved.

One floating chain could restrain an enemy long enough for the Burstpod to shoot it. Three chains might eventually protect an entire firing line.

But if they obeyed the Eye instead of Carlos at the wrong moment, they could become weapons pointed at Ironroot.

"One chain at a time," he decided. "I will control it."

Brann looked disappointed that he had not been tied up.

Before Carlos could continue testing, his Trade section flashed.

Someone had answered his request for defensive crops.

"They want me to feed them for the entire Beginner Period in exchange for one seed?"

Mira heard him from the kitchen and chuckled.

"That must be a very impressive seed." she spoke.
