My Farming Domain Is Broken

Chapter 66. The Difference Between Easy and Hell

Small golden lights appeared at three points along the second channel.

Carlos showed them to everyone.

"I don’t know how to repair irrigation," he said. "The system marked the problems. We clear them carefully and stop if another warning appears."

Cedric looked at him strangely.

"If you make your own food, do you have a cooking domain?" he asked.

Carlos waited for a moment before a smile formed. "Something like that, yes."

"Then you might have knowledge of how to farm too," Cedric spoke while thinking, which made Carlos’s face freeze for a second. That was a daring guess.

"Trust me, I am no farmer..." he spoke out loud, making Cedric look at him in confusion.

Cosmic nodded seriously.

"Trust me. I watched him learn what an aqueduct was today."

"I will throw you into the reservoir, bro."

The first obstruction was only compacted soil and broken stone. Cedric’s axe troops loosened it while Brann carried the larger pieces away.

The work became quiet after the first few stones were removed.

Carlos looked at the five Lords again. They had agreed to work together but he only knew Cedric’s name.

"What are all of your troops?" Carlos asked.

Cedric pointed at the two men carrying axes.

"Common Axemen. Both Level 3. They were my first summons."

"How many conquests have you completed?"

"Three."

Carlos was a little surprised. Cedric was only at Territory Level 2 but completing three conquests this early was still better than most people.

"Which difficulty?"

Cedric looked at him as if the answer was obvious.

"Easy. Every time."

"All three?"

"They are only Common troops, Carlos. Their equipment is barely better than what they were summoned with. Easy gives fewer rewards but both of them are still alive."

Cedric didn’t sound ashamed of the decision. It actually sounded smart in his eyes.

"I am doing the best in this group and even I don’t have the resources for a proper combat barrack. I am not going to throw away my only trained troops for a slightly better chest."

Carlos nodded after hearing that.

He would never select Easy himself but Cedric’s decision wasn’t stupid. Keeping both Axemen alive through three conquests was the reason the other Lords trusted him as their leader.

The woman who had apologized came closer with her two axe troops.

"My name is Rhea. These are Common Woodcutters. Both are Level 2."

Carlos looked at the large axes again. He had mistaken them for combat troops when they entered.

"They are production troops?" Carlos was surprised. They looked the same as Cedric’s troops.

"Yes. I only completed the first conquest on Easy. They had to fight because I still haven’t found a military barrack. One of them almost lost his leg..."

One Woodcutter had a thick scar under his trousers and moved more slowly than the other.

"Most of my wood went into repairing the territory after the raid," Rhea continued. "I came here hoping to find a blueprint or enough resources to buy one. We were already low on food before entering."

That explained why hunger had affected her so badly. The second Lord with two shield troops introduced himself as Tomas.

"Two Common Shield Militia. Level 2. I completed two Easy conquests."

"That’s great. Are you ready to challenge the third?" Carlos asked casually, but Tomas shook his head.

"My equipment is badly damaged."

Tomas showed him one shield filled with bite marks and another that had been tied together with rope.

"The last raid used every recovery potion I had. I can replace the shields but I can’t afford the Iron Ore being asked in Trade. If I enter another conquest now, they will be fighting with broken equipment."

The fourth Lord was Milan. He only had one young Goblin Axeman with him.

"I completed the first conquest on Easy," Milan said. "My original Axeman died during the territory raid two days later. This one was summoned yesterday and is Level 1."

The Goblin avoided looking at him.

"My barrack only summons once every three days. If he dies too, I have nothing protecting the territory..."

Each description was getting a little too depressing. Carlos could understand how tough it could get if the Lord was not competent himself.

The final Lord was Evan. His only troop was a Human Lumberjack carrying an old axe.

"No conquest yet," Evan admitted before Carlos could ask. "I got a Resource Domain and one Lumberjack Lodge. The raid almost broke my Lord building even on its first wave."

"How did you survive?"

"I kept repairing the door while he attacked anything that came through it."

Evan laughed while saying it but his hands tightened around the loose soil he was carrying.

"I registered for the Pocket Dimension because staying inside my territory wasn’t going to change anything. I need food, a barrack or enough resources to buy both."

Carlos didn’t know what to say for a moment.

All had problems that could lead to death soon. Such was the life in the world of Lords.

But Cosmic spoke up in curiosity instead of gloominess. "But I noticed something. Why does everyone in your group have troops using axes for one reason or another?" he asked.

Cedric smiled for a moment. "We found each other online and kind of made a group together. It sounds dumb, but it gives us strength, if you can get that," he stated.

The more Carlos listened to them, the more it felt like they had come across as bad because of the desperate situations they came from.

But still, none of their actions were justified or something Carlos could forgive. At least not until they helped enough.

He had known that other Lords were struggling. Cosmic’s raids had already shown him how different their danger was.

Hearing all five of them explain it directly made the difference much clearer.

Cedric was the strongest person in their group because he had two Level 3 Axemen and completed three Easy conquests.

Carlos had Kaia, Brann, Nessa, One and a Warden Chain around his arm. Ironroot had multiple barracks, defensive crops, walls, food production and many more troops waiting at home.

Hell difficulty had almost killed him many times.

But it had also pushed him far ahead of Lords who were doing everything they could just to remain alive.

Cedric stopped moving soil and looked at Carlos.

"What about you? How many Easy conquests did you finish to build all of this?"

Cosmic started laughing before Carlos could answer.

"Heh. He doesn’t do Easy."

Cedric nodded in understanding and asked, "Normal?"

"Hell," Carlos answered right away without going through every difficulty level one by one.

Every person from Cedric’s group stopped working.

Rhea looked at Carlos and then at Cosmic as if she was waiting for them to say it was a joke.

"Every time?" Cedric asked.

"Every time."

"That explains the troops... They are very strong..." Tomas muttered.

"No," Cosmic said. "It explains why he is insane. The troops are the results of his insane risks of his own life."

Carlos kicked some loose soil toward him.

"Keep working, merchant."
