My Farming Domain Is Broken

Chapter 75. The Price of Cooperation

The next morning, the water still had not stopped after the fourth channel was restored.

It kept flowing through the buried junction, splitting into two directions beneath the ruined district. One side fed the beds Carlos had recovered. The other ran through the clay-lined channel Lydia had repaired.

Carlos stood at the regulator for a while and watched it.

The system had called it a Cooperative Channel Junction.

He did not like the word cooperative. It sounded too close to shared ownership.

Cosmic stood beside him with his arms crossed. "You are staring at water like it insulted your family."

"It did," Carlos said. "It is trying to tell me I need other people."

"You do. You have a farmer, soldiers, workers, me, and a giant Bearkin carrying stones behind you."

Carlos looked back.

Brann was carrying two broken pieces of channel wall at once while Cedric’s Axemen cleared smaller rubble from the path. Rowan was studying the restored beds from a distance while Blue floated above the channel and released careful drops of water when he pointed.

Carlos knew Cosmic was right. That did not mean he had to enjoy the system agreeing with him.

The regulator flashed again.

--

[Caretaker structure partially recovered]

[Ancient Cultivation District required cooperative specialists]

[Historical roles recorded: Crop Keeper, Water Keeper, Soil Mason, Seed Keeper]

[No single caretaker possessed complete district authority]

--

Carlos read the last line twice.

"That is annoying."

Cosmic leaned closer to the panel. "It does not say you lose ownership. It says the old district was too big for one person to maintain."

"Same problem."

"Not really. You can own a place and still need people who know how to do things. That is how your whole territory works."

Carlos wanted to argue, but Rowan was only a few steps away and the proof was standing right there. Carlos had an Agriculture Domain. Rowan knew where water should go and what roots should not be disturbed.

The system had given Carlos land. It had not made him a farmer.

Another panel opened before he could say anything.

--

[Partial district roles available]

[Carlos Goldwin recognized as Acting Crop Keeper]

[Lydia Veyra recognized as Temporary Soil Mason Contributor]

[Authority remains with Partial Owner Carlos Goldwin]

[Contributor access requires permission from Partial Owner]

--

Carlos read every line slowly. The last two mattered most.

Lydia came closer after noticing the panel. Her Clayborn Masons waited behind her with their tools resting against their shoulders.

"Temporary contributor," she said.

"That is what you are," Carlos answered.

She looked like she wanted to say something else, then stopped herself. "Fine. I will earn more contribution before I ask for anything else."

That was better. Carlos had no reason to trust her yet. Her repair work was useful, but she had only arrived yesterday. It did not make the district hers.

"You can inspect damaged walls in the fourth channel," he said. "You ask Rowan before putting anything near roots. You ask me before activating anything. No one enters the seed store."

Lydia nodded once. "Those are clear conditions."

"Good."

She turned away and led her Clayborn Masons back toward the channel without trying to continue the conversation.

Carlos watched her leave for a moment.

"That went better than I thought," Cosmic said.

"Because I made it simple."

"Because she did not argue this time bro."

"Why would she argue? She has no authority here..."

Cosmic looked at him and pucnhed his arm slowly, "Become a good leader bro, not a tyrant"

After saying that, he left leaving Carlos contemplate what he was doing. The greed of owning everything had made him overlook some basic etiquettes. But what happened had happened.

He searched the new options. The Seed Keeper section was blank. The Water Keeper section required another compatible Lord. Only one option was available.

--

[Agricultural Assistant designation available]

[Acting Crop Keeper may register one resident to perform supervised crop maintenance]

[Final authority remains with Acting Crop Keeper]

--

Carlos called Rowan over.

Rowan read the panel, then looked toward the old beds. "What does it let me do?"

"It says supervised crop maintenance. You can use the crop panels without me standing next to you every time."

"Will it tell me what the plants need?"

"Probably not."

"Hmm.. Okay"

Rowan only nodded because it would make his work faster. That was exactly why Carlos trusted him with it.

"I am registering you," Carlos said.

The system accepted the designation.

--

[Rowan registered as Agricultural Assistant]

[Supervised maintenance access granted]

[Unauthorized harvest, transfer and activation remain restricted]

--

Carlos looked over the recovered beds. They were still empty. The seeds they had recovered were safely inside Ironroot, where Boro was tending Hearthpod One under Rowan’s direction.

"We do not plant anything here until we know what this soil does to a seed," Carlos said.

Rowan nodded. "That is sensible. The ground is old, and the water is not the same as Ironroot’s water."

Carlos had nearly forgotten that he was not standing on his own land. The district had survived for centuries through systems he still did not understand.

Then the buried junction shook and everyone stopped.

Kaia moved in front of Carlos immediately. Brann dropped the stone pieces in his hands and faced the open channel. Nessa raised her bow toward the empty path, though there was nothing there except old soil and broken walls.

The water had not changed direction. It was simply moving faster.

Blue floated low over the channel and made a worried sound.

"Is it breaking again?" Carlos asked.

Rowan crouched near the edge without touching the water. "The flow is stronger, but the wall is holding. I do not know why it is doing that."

That was enough for Carlos to use Inspect.

--

[Cooperative Channel Junction response detected]

[Restored water flow has revealed a sealed district record]

[Record location: Central Regulator]

--

The stone beneath Carlos’s hand cracked open.

Not fully. A narrow line appeared across its surface, and an old metal plate rose from the regulator. It had no writing Carlos could read, but the system translated the record above it.

--

[Evacuation preparation: Day 19]

[Seasonal seeds secured]

[Livestock moved toward Red Prairie shelters]

[Glasswood reserves transferred to settlement gates]

[Basin failure estimate: 3 days]

[Cause record restricted by Settlement Authority]

--

Nobody spoke for a few seconds.

"So the old caretakers evacuated when they realized the basin would fail," Carlos said.

"They knew something was coming," Rowan thought out loud "They just could not stop it from what I think."

Rowan looked at the seed store. "At least they saved some of it."

Carlos nodded.

That was what he understood most. When disaster came, the people here had not protected buildings first. They had protected what could grow again.

The regional map opened above the regulator before the panel could fade.

A thin line spread north from the cultivation district, crossing the dark part of the map toward Glasswood Basin. Three parts of the line remained broken, but a golden signal was shining from the other side.

Carlos opened it.

--

[Glasswood Basin operator group detected]

[Recognized operators: 27]

[Network connection incomplete]

--

"27 lords..."

Carlos had thought he would reach Glasswood before anyone else could understand what it was worth.

He had been wrong. Cosmic let out a low breath. "That is a lot of people."

"But isn’t it too much? rewards distributed among so many lords, it will amount to very less." Carlos said.

"WE will only know when we see the scale the Glasswood Basin is working with"

The map shifted again. An unfamiliar public notice appeared beneath the signal.

--

[Glasswood Basin public message]

[All compatible Lords near the northern route are requested to report at the border before sunset]

--

"Wait... were we supposed to see this message?" Carlos asked Cosmic who was equally surprised.

"We are close enough to see it. That does not mean they want us there."
