Carlos did not let anyone rest for the full hour.
The first assault had shown them the enemy’s speed, weapons and numbers. That was useful, but it had also revealed things to themselves how the garrison was weak in some places.
A golden panel appeared before Carlos could move toward the dead Gnolls.

Carlos stored the crate without opening it. The resources were good, but the second assault was only an hour away. He could inspect what was inside after he made sure everyone got out alive.
He then went through the fallen Gnolls and placed every usable axe into his inventory. He was not going to use their weapons right now, but they could be repaired, traded or melted down later.
Kaia pointed at the dead creatures near the gate.
"Their shields are still usable but axes are not. We stack the shields at the right gap and close half the gate with the broken cart frame."
Brann was already moving before she finished speaking showing that the Bearkin might have not been fully dumb, he had knowledge when it came to fighting.
He dragged a collapsed beam from the courtyard and placed it across the right opening. Carlos helped pull shields into position while Nessa collected arrows from the bodies that had not broken.
Two sat near the centre of the fort, smaller and duller than before but still able to move.
Carlos crouched beside it.
"You did good."
The Slime lifted itself slightly at his voice.
It did not have a face, but Carlos had started understanding when it was tired. Its body was smaller, its blue colour duller and every Water Shot took longer to form.
"One more fight," Carlos said. "Then we get out."
Two bounced once.
When the system timer reached zero.
This time, black lights appeared beyond the ruined walls only after the timer reached zero.
When they faded, the Iron Fang Gnolls were already standing in formation. The shield Gnolls were not lined up randomly. The bow users stayed behind them, and the spear carriers waited near the two broken sections of wall.
They had figured out that Brann was the strongest thing inside the fort.
Three of the shield Gnolls turned toward the right gap instead of the gate. If Brann stayed there, the bow users could fire at him from the centre. If he moved, the spears would come through the broken stones.
"What the fuck? How have they figured us out this much?"
Kaia was assesing the situation so she didn’t reply but everyone but two knew the gravity of the situation.
"My lord, they are trying to split us."
Carlos looked at the open gate, then at the bundled cart frame. Staying still would make every weakness easy to target. Going outside could make them lose the wall completely.
He hated both choices. Then Nessa spoke from above them.
"The bow users are not protected from the left. I could take them, my lord."
Carlos looked up. The old wall gave her a clear line toward the back of their formation.
The only issue were the shield gnolls.
"Can you get them after Brann takes care of the frontliners?" he asked.
"Yes."
That was enough. They appeared beyond the broken walls in a rough line. Six carried shields made from black wood. Four held short bows. Behind them stood larger Gnolls with hooked spears.
Kaia’s jaw tightened looking at their formation. It was better than theirs.
"They learned."
"Yeah, that assessed like meant they learnt from the first wave. That’s crazy."
He thought for a moment before he took daring decision, "We leave the gate," he said.
Kaia looked at him. "My lord?"
"They want to crowd the entrance. Brann hits their shields before they set up. Nessa takes the bow users. You and I go with him. Two stays behind the cart frame and hits whoever gets through."
Kaia looked outside again. It was dangerous. Carlos knew that too.
But he had not entered the conquest to let every enemy decide where he stood.
"We go before they do," he said.
Brann smiled for the first time since entering the fort.
"Daring lord back again"
The Bearkin charged through the gate with his hammer raised without listening to anymore planning.
The Gnolls shouted and lowered their shields. Brann’s first swing hit the centre shield hard enough to send the creature holding it backward into two others.
Kaia moved into the gap it created. Her sword struck once, then again. Carlos stayed close behind her with the iron shield raised.
An arrow cut across his shoulder and pain flashed through him, but he did not stop.
Nessa’s answer came from the wall. One of the bow Gnolls fell with an arrow in its throat. A second tried to run to get cover and another arrow struck its back.
The spear Gnolls came next.
Their hooks reached around the shields and tried to pull Brann’s legs out from under him. Carlos caught one spear with his shield, twisted it down and kicked the Gnoll holding it in the knee.
Kaia finished it before it could recover. The fight spread away from the fort and that was good for a few seconds.
But then Carlos saw the larger enemy coming through the grey field.
It wore an iron mask over half its face and carried a heavy two-handed cleaver. Three Gnolls followed behind it, all holding bundles of black oil jars.
"Back!" Carlos shouted. They were carrying things he did not think were normal weapons.
The oil jars were thrown over the broken cart frame.
They shattered inside the fort within seconds and black liquid spread across the stones.
The masked Gnoll raised its cleaver and struck a piece of iron against it. Sparks flew.
One spark landed on the oil-soaked cart frame and fire broke across the broken wood.
When Carlos saw this, his eyes widened and instinctively, he shouted.
"Two! Water! Cart!" Carlos shouted.
Two fired at the burning frame. The Water Shot struck the wood, and the flames died beneath a cloud of hot steam.
Carlos saw Kaia’s expression change. She had understood the plan as soon as the fire started. The oil was not meant to kill them in one blast. It was meant to force them out of the fort and into the open ground where the shield line and bow users could surround them.
The enemies this time felt like they were not dangerous in strength, there was a different feeling. The enemies were intelligent this time.
Carlos’s anger rose again. He hated that the Gnolls had been smarter than he expected.
But he had made the same mistake many times. Underestimating an enemy only helped the enemy.
"Do not let them throw another one," he shouted again, already moving toward the gate.
