The runner’s footsteps disappeared beyond the courtyard arch. Xu Tianlong looked down at the folded tournament notice in his hand. Han Zhihao had entered his name into the open tournament draw without asking him first.

’Interesting.’

That could wait.

Xu folded the slip again and went inside the north room. The notice joined Elder Ming’s note and the other private papers on the low table. His recruitment token stayed with them for now.

When he came back out, Shun was crossing the courtyard with an armful of bedding while Cheng argued quietly with him over which bundle belonged in which room.

"That’s the east-room blanket."

"It came from the north pile."

"Because you put it there."

Shun stared at Cheng. Cheng stared back. Feng walked between them, took the blanket from Shun, and tossed it through the east-room doorway.

"Solved."

Shun opened his mouth.

"Don’t," Feng said.

He closed it again. Xu’s mouth twitched.

The faint discoloration along his left forearm had faded to little more than a dull shadow. It didn’t hurt when he flexed his hand. Qing’er had already seen it earlier. He let the matter die there.

Lin came from the north room carrying a folded outer robe.

"The sect gives guests rooms," she said, "but apparently expects us to discover where they hid all the hooks."

"Did you find them?"

"Eventually."

"Then Azure survived the crisis."

Lin gave him a flat look. Feng laughed from the west doorway.

"Careful, Tianlong. Your wife has barely started organizing people and already looks ready to conquer the guest grounds."

"Only the parts arranged badly," Lin said.

"So all of it?"

Lin’s stare shifted to Feng. Feng lifted both hands. "I’m going back to my room." She did, still smiling.

Lin carried the folded robe into the north room. Feng disappeared through the west-room doorway a moment later, and Shun and Cheng took the last of the bedding toward the entrance-side room.

Qing’er remained near the east-room entrance with her hands clasped in front of her. Only then did she step toward him.

"Young Master..."

"Qing’er?"

Her fingers tightened. A faint peach color had already begun to spread over her cheeks.

"Y-Young Master... would you..." She swallowed and looked up at him. "Could I sleep with you tonight?"

Xu walked over. She held her ground, though her eyes dropped when he stopped in front of her.

He put his right hand on her head and stroked her black-brown hair, careful of the simple bamboo pin holding part of it back.

"Qing’er... you’re really cute when you get like this."

Her face warmed further.

"Of course. I’ll come to your room later. Wait for me there."

Qing’er looked up so quickly that her bangs shifted. A smile escaped her, small and bright, her dimples appearing before she could hide them.

"Yes, Young Master."

She crossed to the east room quickly, still smiling. Xu watched the door close behind her, then went back to the last of the evening work.

By the time full night settled over Azure Cloud Sect, the lower guest courtyard had quieted.

Cheng and Shun were in the room near the entrance. Feng’s lamp still burned behind the west-room paper window. The east room was dimmer. The north room held only 1 lamp beside the bed.

Xu closed the north-room door behind him.

Lin sat near the head of the bed in her white inner robe, combing the last tangles from her long black hair. The pale streak at her left temple caught the lamplight each time the comb passed beneath it.

Xu set his sword against the wall within reach and sat beside her. Lin handed him the comb without asking. He took it.

"You do this better," she said.

"Do I?"

"You pull less."

"High praise."

"Don’t become arrogant."

Xu combed slowly from the middle of her hair down, then started higher when the ends were clear. Lin’s shoulders loosened by degrees. When he finished, she leaned back against him instead of taking the comb.

Xu set it aside and wrapped an arm around her waist. For a while, they stayed that way. Lin traced the back of his hand with a fingertip.

"You haven’t said anything about the tournament notice."

"There’s nothing useful to say tonight. Han put my name in the draw. I don’t know who I’m facing or why he did it."

"That never stops people from talking."

"It stops me."

Lin gave a quiet sound that might have been agreement. Xu kissed the side of her head. Then he said, "Yueyao."

"Hm?"

He smiled against her hair. "I’m sleeping with your little sister tonight." Lin turned her head.

"My little sister?"

"Haven’t you already decided Qing’er is your little sister?"

Her expression shifted.

"...Right."

Then her eyes narrowed.

"Husband."

"Yes?"

"Even if Qing’er is very cute..." Lin paused, as if choosing how generous she intended to be. "You should restrain yourself a little. Yes?"

Xu laughed under his breath.

"Yes, yes, my dear wife. I can’t promise that."

"Tianlong."

He turned her face toward him with his fingertips and stroked her cheek with his thumb.

"You’re cute too, my wife."

Lin didn’t answer. She caught his collar and kissed him. Xu accepted the challenge immediately.

Her lips parted. His tongue pushed into her mouth, found hers, and sucked it slowly, deep enough to make her fingers tighten in his collar.

"Mmh..."

He let her breathe before the kiss could become something else. Lin’s eyes stayed heavy-lidded for a moment.

"That," she murmured, "was unnecessary."

"You started it."

"I kissed you. You attacked my tongue."

"And?"

A reluctant curve touched her mouth. Xu kissed her forehead.

"All right. I’m going over there."

Lin leaned back against the bedding. "Yes, husband." He kissed her forehead again, took his sword, and crossed the courtyard.

The west-room lamp had finally gone out. The guest grounds beyond the wall were quiet except for insects and a distant burst of laughter from some other courtyard farther downhill.

He gave the east-room door a light knock and entered.
